Post of mine that I made a while ago that I don‘t agree with at all anymore got reblogged with an annoying faux-concern-type addition that makes my eyes roll so hard lmao.

I‘m not gonna take the post down because I feel the archive is important to recognize that opinions can change over time, but I did turn off reblogs for that particular post to avoid any similar things in the future.

My current thoughts and understanding on Jirai kei:

My opinion of the term jirai kei and it's usage has shifted around quite a bit. My introduction to Jirai was very negative and I immediately had a very black and white view on the subject. However over time as I get more information on the subject and have interacted with people and content that self identity as jirai, my views on it have become a lot more nuanced.

The orgins of the term is negative and meant to be insulting to women and those with mental health problems. And there are definitely people who use the term jirai as an excuse to act negatively or to promote harmful behavior. However that is by no means everyone. And I don't think that the orgins of a term sets in stone how it can ever be used or perceived. Words develop based on how they are used. So do I agree with people using the term to promote anti-recovery or abusive behaviors? No. But I have seen people use it either neutral or even in positive ways. Like using it to say it is okay to have strong emotions, it doesn't make you less cute.

I know that the term landmine still has a negative connotation though. And some people believe people in the west should not use the term jirai because it has not been used against them so hence have no business in reclaiming it. However I don't think that the concept of being looked down on or made fun of for being overly emotional or sensitive is a Japan only experience. Many mentally ill people such as myself have been called landmines as well, in those words or others. The effect and experience is similar even if the language is different.

At this point I don't think the term is going to just stop being used. But I think it is more important to not tolerate the behavior of people who mock those with mental health problems or those who glorify abusive behaviors. Instead of focusing on not tolerating the usage of a word that has been developing to have a less negative connotation. I don't think the term jirai kei is going away anytime soon. I rather allow it to develop into a community of well meaning people who may use the aesthetic to vent but overall promote healthy mindsets/behaviors. And not demonize anyone who uses the term to the point where the community stagnants and truly only becomes a community full of anti recovery people.

(I am more than willing to discuss the topic if anyone wishes. I don't think I know even close to everything about the style. But I love learning and just hearing other people's thoughts on the subject.)

i really wanna start getting into like nurse/menhera kei, yume yami, yami kawaii, egl fasions, etc,,, but idk how really :/

so! i have some questions!

1. is there like, a more ig "nonbinary/masculine" version of this stuff? i am a guy, i don't mind wearing skirts, but i just prefer shorts for comfort :)

2. what are some good websites for stuff like this? i also may need like, larger sizes/plus sized clothing to fit me

3. im really having trouble with shoes because ik demonia's are super iffy in quality, so some other suggestions of shoes (notdollskill plz) would be great !

Oh it’s super cool you wanna get into the fashion! I’ll try answering these as best I can :>

1. Menhera fashion by default is pretty gender neutral imo. Usually the main part of the coord is the top, and most any bottoms would fit the style. Most of the pics you see online may lean more feminine, but really all you would have to do is replace the skirts with shorts/pants.

2. Websites and specific stores is a liiiitle more difficult. A lot of popular stores for menhera fashion are Japanese (such as Listen Flavor or ACDCrag), and quite a few people also like shopping from Taobao (which is kinda like Chinese Amazon. You’d need to use a proxy for it though). There’s also independent artists who sell their art as shirt prints on suzuri (like negi). I’d suggest looking at the shoplist on menheratic’s blog, it’s quite in-depth. There are also a few western stores such as Puvithel, and a few shops on etsy as well (I personally like this one). Just takes a little bit of searching around. Since oversized clothes are a popular trend too, it shouldn’t be too hard to find plus-sized-suitable clothes too.

3. Idk how much I can help here honestly. I think most shoes will fit the style, not just the typical “alt” shoes like Demonia has. I’ve seen a lot of people really like platform sneakers in suitable colours for menhera fashion. If I had to recommend a specific store though, I’ve heard good things about koi footwear!

Hmm, this is something thing we’ve been wondering about for a while, and as much we’d like to directly ask the Japanese community, we’re barely a beginner at Japanese so that’d be too embarrassing. So here’s a question to the Tumblr Menhera community- How intrinsic to you think medical themes and motifs are to Menhera art or fashion? As in, do you think medical themes are a “part” of Menhera? If you have a piece of Menhera art or fashion, and you remove or replace all the overt medical themes, can you still have something that can be called “menhera”?

We’ve been pretty confused over this, we really, really like the general ethos of Menhera subculture. We love the idea of being able to make your struggles something visible, tangible, and “real” and of spreading the message that just because someone looks okay or cute, that doesn’t mean they can’t still be struggling. Plus we’ve always loved making trangressive art and we love pretty things, what better than to combine the two? But, in all our time of observing Menhera art, we’ve always had a hard time connecting to the more overt medical themes. For us, our struggles with mental health have never been something particularly medicalized. While we have gone through a fair amount of medical processes for our physical problems and regularly take OTC meds for pain, our actual mental health problems have never “medicalized” to the point we can connect to the very medical art a lot of people make. Honestly, we’re kinda afraid of most medical things…

Back to the point, on everything we’ve seen on the origins and ethics of Menhera subculture, nothing seems to indicate medical themes are a required part of its art. But most stuff we see online about “getting started” in Menhera seems to really push the medical motifs. A lot of art also uses medical motifs in it. Maybe we’re just misunderstanding it all? If anyone can answer our question or help alleviate our confusion that’d be appreciated.

I think it kinda depends on what you consider to be “medical motifs”. Stuff like bandages are super common in menhera art, both Western and Japanese, but thats different from very obviously medical motifs like pills, syringes, hospitals, etc.

I see things like pills and bandages in a lot of Japanese menhera art, probably because the motifs are so obvious and direct in their association with “struggle” (ie, illness).

Theres also things like knives or other, er, things like that, which are pretty common, and those arent technically medical, but theyre associated with mental health for their own reasons.

I think what I’m trying to get at is medical motifs arent necessary, but theyre common in menhera tips for newcomers because the motifs are very obvious in their meaning, so its easier to understand. I think so long as you resonate with the motifs and they reflect your own struggles, while still being easy to interpret by outsiders, it should be fine :>
