Junhyuk had spent his entire life getting virtually everything that he wanted.
It wasn’t necessarily that he was spoiled. Well… He was a little spoiled.
His parents were rich and would buy him anything if he even showed a little interest in it, and they weren’t even neglectful. He spent every night eating dinner with them before retreating into his room- maybe playing a few video games and then finally going to bed.
He was naturally pretty smart. Never really had to study much for tests, he always got perfect grades, and all of his teachers loved him.
And, whether he really acknowledged it himself whenever he looked in the mirror, he was fairly handsome. He was deemed one of the most beautiful guys in school and was very popular with all of his fellow classmates. On Valentine’s day he could hardly count how many candy grams he had gotten.
Well, Minjae had taken the time to count them. It was 215 candy grams in total.
Anyways, he was getting off track. The point was that Junhyuk got everything that he had ever wanted in life, and better even- he had gotten things he had never even asked for before as well. He was sort of just used to the privilege he got. Sometimes that meant he would be a little surprised if he wasn’t given the same sort of attention and care that he was always just gotten from people.
But other then a slightly skewed expectation of how people were going to be treating him, Junhyuk couldn’t say that he wasn’t a good person.
He was caring, tried to remember the name of all the girls who would come by and talk to him at lunch time. He would do anything for any of his friends, and despite the fact he lost class presidency to Lee Seokmin, he made sure not to be a sore loser.
He liked it when he saw someone smile because of him, felt good whenever he heard someone laugh at one of his jokes, and he didn’t mind it when his friends made fun of him because it made them happy, and that made him happy.
So, he thought that maybe it was okay he was spoiled. He thought it was okay that he got whatever he wanted, because he was a good sport about it.
“What does she mean I’m not really her type?” Junhyuk exclaimed as he stared at the lump of mashed potatoes on the plate in front of him. Minjae chuckled, looking up at Junhyuk in amusement.
“Are you really still hooked up on what what’s her name said?”
Junhyuk shot Minjae a glare which just made him laugh more.
“Oh, you are.”
Junhyuk couldn’t really see what could possibly be so funny.
Last week, Junhyuk had been reading in the library. He had been surrounded by a group of girls- his bookies, he liked to call them affectionately and some boys had been getting a little bit loud. Junhyuk found it relatively hard to hid frustration most days, and it didn’t help that he liked to let his true emotions show when he was with certain people.
He didn’t like it if people got confused by his actions. He could be unintentionally flirty, and he didn’t want to have to break anyone’s heart by leading them on. So, he was careful.
So, the girls could tell that he was upset without him having to say a word.
“Hey, you guys are bothering Junhyuk, can you keep quiet?” Lena complained loudly. Junhyuk looked up, surprised by the brute words. One of the boys- Hwanwoong laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Hey sorry, we were a bit loud huh?” He turned and smacked his friend- Seoho- in the head. “Keep it down! We’re in a library!”
There was a loud scoff, and everyone turned their attention up to someone that was sitting at one of the tables.
To be completely honest Junhyuk had barely even recognized you. He thought maybe you were in one of his classes? But it was possible you weren’t. He wouldn’t have even known your name if it hadn’t been for the fact that one of the girls whispered it as she rolled her eyes.
He felt bad for not knowing it. He looked at you, watching the way that you shifted your weight from one foot to the other, brushing your hair back over your shoulder. Your cheeks were red… Anger? He wondered why you were mad- but he didn’t really wonder for long.
“Oh, so now you guys will shut up? Just because one of Junhyuk’s cronies told you to?”
Youngjo got to his feet.
“Hey, y/n, we’re sorry,” he mumbled softly, trying to soothe you. But you just got angrier.
“I have an exam tomorrow Youngjo! The library is supposed to be a place that I can come to study!” You exclaimed. You pointed at Junhyuk angrily, ignoring the surprised look that crossed his face.
“I mean why does everyone in this school revolve around Junhyuk like he’s some sort of god?”
“Don’t say things like that about Hyukkie,” Lena blurted. She jumped a little when the nickname left her lips and glanced over at Junhyuk: “Sorry, is it okay if I call you that?”
Junhyuk’s face dissolved into a more relaxed expression as he looked at Lena.
“Of course, it is, you girls can call me whatever you want.”
Even as he said it, he shyly glanced to the side, feeling a little unused to such attention even though he got it every day. The girls around him audibly ‘awed’ at his actions which just made more color rise to his cheeks.
You actually scoffed.
“This is exactly what I’m talking about.”
“What?” Lena blurted. “He’s cute. He’s sensitive. He’s-”
The color just kept rising to Junhyuk’s cheeks, and he honestly couldn’t help it anymore, he stepped forward about to stop whatever she was saying: “Lena-”
But before he could finish you were speaking again. Your eyes locked onto Junhyuk’s, and for some reason, being trapped under your intense gaze only made his cheeks turn darker.
“He’s just not really my type,” you stated coldly.
Then before anyone could say a word in response, you swung your bag over your shoulder and grabbed your books in your arms, leaving before you could say another word.
“I’m everyone’s type,” Junhyuk grumbled in frustration. “I mean, look at me!”
When no one did, Junhyuk turned to his right and grabbed Huijun by the cheeks.
“Look at me. What’s the first thing that you think when you look at me?”
“Handsome,” Huijun said without missing a beat. That satisfied Junhyuk enough for the moment. He let his hands drop to his side with a huff, but Seungmin ruined it after not even a moment.
“See normally I’d say dumb, but that’s just me.”
Junhyuk groaned letting his face fall onto the table.
“This is stupid. This is stupid!” He exclaimed. “After all, I mean, tons of girls at this school like me! So, who cares if she does or doesn’t?”
None of the boys really cared about Junhyuk’s mental breakdown, and he understood why. It was final’s week. They were tired. They had a lot on their minds, and they didn’t need to worry about his girl problems. But still, he was wrecked.
“And another thing-”
“Hey.”
Junhyuk froze, his finger poised almost theatrically in the air. Normally, a soft voice speaking to him wouldn’t mean anything at all. He could recognize most people in his class, and he would just adapt his personality to the parts of him that he knew they liked the best.
But hearing your voice. He had no clue what to do. No clue how to change.
He slowly turned his head over his shoulder.
It really was you.
He couldn’t help it. He didn’t understand what was happening.
He felt his heart skip a beat when he looked at you and god he didn’t know why.
You were standing there, looking… Well, less confident then you had the first time that he saw you. Your eyebrows were drawn in, your eyes reluctant to be looking at Junhyuk at all.
Your feet kicked softly at the ground beneath your feet.
Why did just the sight of you make Junhyuk’s heartbeat so hard? How come seeing you look so shy and nervous before him made him want to protect you in a way that he had never wanted to protect any girl before.
“H-Hey,” he murmured softly. You rolled your eyes and shoved your twiddling fingers into your back pockets.
“Look, I just wanted to say…” Your voice trailed off, and you grunted. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry alright?”
Junhyuk’s eyebrows raised at that.
“Sorry?”
God, he felt so dumb. Had he always been so completely and utterly illiterate? Since when had he been unable to find any words other than the ones being supplied by the person in front of him? What was it about you that made Junhyuk so nervous?
“For being rude in the library,” you explained. “I was on like four hours of sleep and according to Youngjo my behavior was entirely too inappropriate especially towards you.”
Junhyuk opened his mouth.
“And before you say it, not because you are the golden boy of this school. It’s because you are too innocent to have malintent. Especially when it was Lena who I should’ve been taking out my anger on.”
“You and Youngjo are friends?”
Junhyuk heard the way that Minjae laughed behind him, and if that wasn’t enough to tell Junhyuk that he hadn’t said the right thing, then the way his heart constricted in his chest probably was. He wanted to hit himself- no he wanted you to hit him. And then he wanted to go home, and never leave his room again.
Ever.
“Hm? Yeah, Youngjo and I go way back,” you replied. You shifted slightly, pushing your backpack strap up on your shoulder. “Okay, I know that I am awful at this but please just say that you accept my apology and let me get out of here.”
Again, Junhyuk didn’t understand it but the thought of you leaving his side? Of not being in your presence? It freaked him out. He didn’t want you to leave. He wanted you to sit down and to talk to you and he didn’t understand why but he knew that he could not let you leave.
“No.”
He heard someone from behind him spit loudly, and he didn’t have to look to know who it had been. You looked surprised as well, and not because of the person choking behind him but because of him. In fact, his abrupt words actually made you look up at him and finally you were actually looking at him.
“What do you mean no?” You blurted. “Are you really that spoiled that-”
“If you want to make it up to me then you have to go out with me,” Junhyuk stated confidently. You stared at him blankly, so he added: “Tonight.”
“Are you out of your mind?” You exclaimed.
Yes. He had to be out of his mind. He knew he had to be because there was only one explanation for the way he was feeling. The fact that he couldn’t stop thinking about you. The fact that he didn’t want to let you out of his sight.
He had never had a crush on anyone before and he supposed even if he had, that the relationship would have been handed to him on a silver platter. Most girls would go out of their way in order to go out with him. In order to make him smile or be the reason that he wanted to duck his head in cold water every time he looked at his reflection in the mirror.
But you? You weren’t like that. Dare he say it. You were different.
You weren’t going to just bend over backwards in order to fit what you thought he wanted. Why did he love that so much?
He had never thought about it before, but you were sort of everything that he had ever wanted.
Well, maybe that was dramatic, but you were someone that wasn’t going to pretend to be someone else just to fit in with him.
And someone that Junhyuk didn’t want to change himself for. He wanted you to like him. He wanted it to be genuine. He wanted you to look him in the eyes and to want to spend your life with him- even if only for a sliver of a moment.
“It’s the only way I will forgive you,” Junhyuk insisted. He wasn’t sure where he got the bravery from. He wanted nothing more then to look away from you. He was so nervous and yet… He couldn’t look away. “Please?”
You looked skeptical. Like you weren’t really sure of what his intentions were. But Junhyuk didn’t care. He didn’t care just as long as he got that magical:
You didn’t say another word to him. Instead, you sharply turned over your shoulder and stormed away. The cold behavior didn’t bother him at all. He turned around feeling lost in a daze.
“She said yes,” he murmured in awe.
“She said fine,” Seungmin corrected with a roll of his eyes, but Junhyuk didn’t let that phase him. You had said yes. You had agreed. He was going to do it, he was going on a date with you and he knew- just knew that you were going to love it and love him, just as long as you guys got the chance to get to know one another well enough.
Seongjun reached forward, interrupting Junhyuk’s train of thought. He placed a hand on Junhyuk’s forehead, concern crossing his brow.
“Hey, you’re really really hot,” he mumbled. “And different then usual… Are you okay Junhyuk?”
Junhyuk was more than okay.
Sure, two weeks ago, the idea that just a girl in his class could make him feel this way would have been pure insanity… But now, the pure insanity was that he had ever managed to pass the time without being completely and utterly obsessed with you.
“Seongjun?” Junhyuk asked. Seongjun leaned forward, his eyes wide.
“Yes?”
“Do you think she liked me?”
Seongjun deflated, his hands leaving Junhyuk’s forehead.
“False alarm fellas, I know exactly what’s happening here.”
“What? What’s happening?” Huijun asked, an eyebrow quirking curiously.
“Junhyukkie’s finally growing up,” Seungmin said teasingly. “It’s his first crush.”
The entire table gasped, but Junhyuk couldn’t even hear it.
Because all he could think about was how he was going on a date with you.
Before he even knew it, the school bells were ringing, and he threw his books into his bag.
After lunch he had sent you a message on Instagram, and while you hadn’t accepted his sudden follow request (which most people would have been honored to receive) you had told him where your locker was.
He bounded to the correct hallway, practically bouncing on the balls off his feet when he saw you.
Oh, how you took his breath away.
He couldn’t recall a time when anyone had seemed this interesting to him. He wanted to capture this feeling- somehow, someway, he wanted to remember this forever.
“Hello,” he greeted warmly. You glanced at him once again that look of disdain crossing your face.
“What’s got you so cheery?”
Was it cheesy to respond that you were the reason? It seemed a bit hasty, that was for sure, but then again, the thing that Junhyuk liked so much about you was your blunt honesty. You weren’t afraid to tell him how you felt.
He loved that, and he didn’t want to be afraid either.
“You,” he replied simply. “So where do you want to go today? A diner? Bowling? A-”
“Look, Junhyuk… I don’t know if this was some sort of bet or something but…” You trailed off and sighed. “I mean don’t you have better ways to be spending your time then going out with me? I have homework.”
“Homework can wait an hour,” Junhyuk replied, but he couldn’t help the slight disappointment that shot through his body at your words. “I- I mean obviously you don’t have to go with me or anything.”
And suddenly, he felt like the stupidest person on the planet.
What, just because everyone liked him meant that you would too? Did he really think that he would be able to find a girl that understood him as perfectly as his friends did? Had he really imagined that you would see past the mask that others put on him and the one he put on himself?
He was delusional to believe that you would like him, and honestly maybe you were right to dislike him so?
You told him that he wasn’t your type and suddenly he was just obsessed with you? How superficial and egotistic was that? How-
“Hey, w-wait.”
Junhyuk looked up at you, and while he was sure that he wasn’t the best at thinking and listening at the same time prior to this, he knew now that maybe he was even worse at it then he thought.
Because you… You actually looked to be concerned for him.
But that couldn’t be right.
“You actually look like you’re… Disappointed?”
“Well, yeah,” Junhyuk replied. He looked away from you. God he couldn’t keep looking at you. Was this what heartbreak felt like?
Sure it had only been a week, and maybe a few hours that he thought that maybe you two had a chance but… God, he felt like he was suffocating.
“I was really excited to go out with you.”
There was a deafening silence that filled the air and those words. Junhyuk didn’t speak, and neither did you. For too many long moments, you both stood there in silence. But then you spoke.
“Okay then. You’re right. Homework can wait.”
Junhyuk’s heart beat once. Then again, and suddenly it was like he had been brought back to life.
“You mean-”
“I’m giving you a chance Bang Junhyuk. Prove to me that you are worth it.”
And if Junhyuk was certain of anything, he was certain that he absolutely was. And that you were worth every single second that he was about to spend making you believe just that.
“Junhyuk gets everything and everyone loves him. So… How come when one person yells at him in the library does he feel like his whole world has suddenly been turned upside down?”
