Top 5 Passive Aggressive Ways to Deal with Bigotry and Racism
Rant. I really could have used this last night. I was at a party and a grown-ass woman without children was talking about how much she loved the Disney Channel. (I mean, I love the Disney Channel but I'm not a bigot so it's ok.) She was saying that she liked to put it on and fall asleep to it (so she doesn't even watch it) because that way if she wakes up in the middle of the night something raunchy isn't on. Which, ok valid. (But then she said she put the timer on so the tv automatically shuts off so I'm like, that makes it seem like you are not doing what you said and actually just like to watch the Disney Channel.)Â
Anyway, the point of all of this was to tell us all what she had just heard about Good Luck Charlie. Now, before I say what she said I want to describe the conversation and the trigger that made her think she should tell this story. Her husband was talking about how he hates children so much that he wants to make a cartoon show that looks normal so that the kids get attached to the characters and then kill them all off so that the children cry. So in talking about essentially ruining shows, she chimes in with this gem of a story. Basically, she brings up Good Luck Charlie and I think "oh, no! Are they going to have someone die?" No, something FAR worse. She told us that they were thinking of having one of the characters, are you sitting down?, they were thinking of having one of the characters be GAY. Well, at that point, little homosexual me is sitting there (of course I am sitting right next to her) like "oh, fuck." As she continues to talk about how this show is just a simple "family friendly" show that has to get all progressive I'm just like "I'm going to pet you little puppy because I don't think you're a homophobe." Then, the person on the other side of me (why I decided to make a homophobic sandwich I'll never know) goes on to say how TV is ruining families because they have shows with all of these gay people and single parents. Yes, single parents apparently are just as bad as the fags.
I would just like to point out that I am 23, not 87, and I am writing this from the year 2013, not 1952. At this point, though, I'm telling myself "this is what happens when you are friends with Mormons so you really can't blame anyone but yourself." But they are not all Mormons, and even if they were, that kind of talk is not acceptable (as I'm sure all of you Tumblr people already know). But, I sat there and said nothing. The thing with comments like these is that the person is just a fucking idiot and thinks that they are saying shit that will crack up the party and then everyone will move on. But, it's like 18 hours later and I'm ashamed to say that I am not only still thinking about it, but it actually still hurts me. I'm sitting here unable to do my homework (well, I'm not really complaining about that part) mad at myself for not saying anything. Since I would like to move on with my life, I would like to tell you, dear Tumblr, some of the things I would like to have said (because, you know, nothing is better than preaching to the choir.)
1) OH MY GOD! GAY people on Good Luck Charlie??!?!?!1! What is next? [insert minority of choice]? (After blank stares or confusion) Oh, I thought we were begin bigots and complaining about TV reflecting the actual diversity that exists in American instead of focusing on the privileged white, straight, middle class family. Â
2) *Gasp* I am so sorry. As a homosexual myself I feel personally responsible for ruining the show that you fall asleep to. The next time we have a meeting of the gays I will make a motion to cancel all of the gay characters because instead of interrupting your nap, I think gay people should step out of the limelight and go back to quietly existing so that people like you can pretend we don't exist.
3) Throw my drink in her face and walk out of the party. Â Â

Black-footed ferrets from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo begin life in the Colorado wild
by Matt Steiner
A tiny black-footed male ferret with a curious look and a twitching nose emerged from his carrier shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday at a ranch west of Pueblo.
The ferret, who was born and raised at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, hesitantly looked around at the wide, dusty expanse that was about to become his new home. He finally decided the coast was clear and dived into the prairie dog hole just inches from the carrier.
"There he goes," someone chimed in from a group of zoo employees and volunteers that gathered around the carrier to see the endangered animal introduced into the wild.
The ferret was among about 35 ferrets getting a chance for new life Wednesday at Walker Ranch near U.S. 50 outside of Pueblo. More than 30 people, including zoo officials, media members, state parks and wildlife officials and U.S. Fish and Wildlife conservationists, joined the Walker family for the historic eventâŚ

It Gets Better, Unless Youâre FatÂ
I never had to come out as fat.
When you grow up overweight, everyone notices â not just your classmates, who are too young to have mastered the art of tact, but also friendsâ parents and teachers. I knew I was fat because people told me I was fat, either directly (a slap to the stomach and an unkind word) or in subtler ways (having a teacher rifle through my lunch box and comment on the contents). I felt shame over my size long before I had any concept of my sexuality, and years after coming out as gay, I still feel anxious identifying as fat.
As an openly gay writer, one of the questions Iâm asked most often is, âWere you bullied growing up?â And the answer is yes, but itâs never the answer theyâre looking for. In many ways I was lucky to have come of age in a liberal enclave where my sexuality was accepted if not embraced. Oh, sure, Iâve had the word âfaggotâ hurled at me â and the sad truth is, Iâd be shocked if a gay man hadnât â but it was always secondary. The real source of my bullying was the extra weight Iâve carried since childhood. I can count on one hand the number of times Iâve been called a âfaggotâ to my face, but I couldnât tell you how often someone has made a dig about my weight.
There were over 600 separate and distinct American Indian tribes living in the U.S. when the Europeans arrived. Most of them have since been decimated through genocide or assimilation; but many of those tribes are still with us today, and thatâs important.
Right now, there are 565 federally recognized tribes, however, many tribes werenât recognized and that remains a point of contention. The Lumbee is an example of a tribe in constant flux over their lack of âlegalâ recognition.
Currently, there are approximately 4.1 million Alaskan Natives and American Indians, about .9 percent of the total U.S. population. This is in contrast to estimated numbers of Natives between 50-100 million pre-European populations.
Most of this should be common knowledge, but itâs not.
But the food-stamp program is now set to downsize in the weeks ahead. There's a big automatic cut scheduled for Nov. 1, as a temporary boost from the 2009 stimulus bill expires. That change will trim about $5 billion from federal food-stamp spending over the coming year.

U.N. General Assembly Votes Overwhelmingly Against U.S. Embargo of Cuba
Why does Ambassador Ronald Godard say it is still in place?
"The international community cannot be â cannot in good conscience ignore the ease and frequency with which the Cuban regime silences critics,
 disrupts peaceful assembly,
 impedes independent journalism and,
despite positive reforms, continues to prevent some Cubans from leaving or returning to the island.
The Cuban government continues its tactics of politically motivated detentions,
harassment and police violence against Cuban citizens."
Eh but what's a little hypocrisy? Well...
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno RodrĂguez Parrilla: "The blockade is aggressively extraterritorial and a violation of international law, which lacerates the sovereignty of other states. Itâs a transgression of the international rules that govern foreign trade and freedom of navigation. The cruel inclusion of medicines and foodstuffs is a violation of national humanitarian law. It is a hostile and unilateral act that should cease unilaterally."

(Look, this is nowhere near perfect. Clearly if you think someone has the right to choose, a law prohibiting that choice would be morally wrong to you. BUT, compare this point of view to the government shutdown. If everyone starts thinking the way she did, whether it was intentional or not, I think the world would start making the steps in the right direction.)

What do you and your family eat each week? You may be shocked to see the significant variation even between relatively âsimilarâ nations when it comes to diet. While many families within the United States and Mexico include fast food and soda into the core of their nutritional program, families from nations like Bhutan survive off of traditional base food items like vegetables and grains. It is easy to see why disease rates are skyrocketing in many developed countries, where nutrition is not held to a very high regard.
Amazingly, the United States also spends more on healthcare than any nation in the world. Despite spending $7,960 per capita, the United States has been ranked dead last when it comes to the quality of care. The fact of the matter is that when food intake is ignored â along with the subsequent toxic ingredients that go along with the processed food addiction â disease will arise. In the telling pictures below, taken from the book âHungry Planet: What the World Eatsâ, you can see what the average family from each nation eats over the period of one week.
North Carolina, United States
This family from North Carolina eats a diet almost entirely of processed and pre-prepared foods with heavy amounts of junk and fast food. Consuming mostly sugar-laden âfruitâ drinks and mega-sized sodas from Burger King and McDonaldâs, this average American diet will ultimately lead to chronic disease and rampant sickness. Some favorite foods include pizza and fast food.
Mexico
Families in mexico also tend to consume sugary sodas and processed foods, though their fruit and vegetable intake is higher than the United States families observed. The family lists their favorite food items as pizza, pasta, and chicken.
Canada
Enjoying some of the same processed items as families from Mexico and the United States, Canadian families do consume processed chips and meats, though you will notice a more prominent display of vegetables and fresh fish on the table. An increased amount of yogurt and cheese is also featured.
Italy
Italian families enjoy their bread, pasta, and assorted fruit. With grains a major part of the diet, along with other carbohydrate-rich foods, Italian families tend to forfeit some meal options high in protein for âtraditionalâ Italian dishes like pasta with ragu. While many of these items are fresh or even baked at home, Italian families still consume large amounts of sodas like Pepsi. You can see that this family drinks about 6 larger-sized bottles per week.
China
This Chinese family prefers fried shredded pork with sweet and sour sauce, listed as their favorite dishes. Eating processed food items mixed with packaged meats and fish, this Chinese family eats more fruit than vegetables, and their produce selection is one of the smallest besides the United States.
Chad
This family resides in the developing nation of Chad and spends only the equivalent of $1.23 per week on food to feed the entire family. Their favorite food is soup with fresh sheep meat.
Japan
It may surprise you, but this Japanese family consumes a diet high in processed junk and sugary treats. They list their favorite food items as cake, potato chips, and sashimi.
Germany
This German family has adopted an American-styled nutritional regiment, stating that their favorite foods are pizza, vanilla pudding, fried potatoes, and fried noodles. You may also notice the largely increased amount of beer and other alcoholic drinks over the other nations.
Great Britain
Spending over $250 per week on food, the average family in Great Britain is eating mostly processed meals and candy. This familyâs preferred foods include chocolate fudge cake, mayonnaise sandwiches, and prawn cocktail. Source Note: I posted this yesterday but these photos illustrate the inequity of wealth far better then the following words will (pay special attention to the Chad familyâs picture): âThe manner in which the international political economy produces and distributes wealth is well illustrated by the production and distributions of world food resources. If the wheat, rice, and other grains produced throughout the world were distributed equally to all the worldâs peoples, each individual would receive 3,600 calories per day, well above the average U.S.-recommended daily allowances of 2,700 calories for adult males, 2,000 for adult females, and 1,300 to 3,000 for teenagers. Yet 9 million children die every year from starvation, and 4 billion people do not have enough to eat. The typical Western family of four consumes more grain (directly and indirectly in the form of meat) than a poor Indian family of 20.â
