Lucy Argencourt knew that, in another life, she would have adored balls such as these endlessly. Even tonight, as she sat with Dot as her sister finished getting ready for that evening, Lucy had been excited about the prospect of the evening. Arriving with her party, she’d managed to position herself near Christopher, stealing glances that only Dot might be able to distinguishing as having any further meaning. The pair even managed a dance despite Dot’s urging Lucy not to over exert herself.

As she moved, weaving in and out amongst the other guests on the dance floor, thoughts began plaguing her. Did they know, the other guests, about her situation? Did they all look at her and Dot with pity? Did they see her, a girl in her prime, and know that she was supposed to end her days an unmarried old maid?

Did any of them even contemplating helping the two sisters?

She’d tripped on the hem of her dress as she danced, Christopher catching her before she’d had a chance to fall. Dot was otherwise occupied, thankfully, so Christopher walked her to the sitting area away from the noise of the party. She wanted to beg him to stay at her side, but knew he could not and he left to find Dot once she had assured him she just needed a rest. When the curtain moved, she expected to see Dot hurrying inside but was met with a much taller stature.

“Please, do not apologize Lord Montbatten,” Lucy replied with a kind smile. She had met the man before her once in the past, during a diplomatic meeting in Catalonia, and again upon their arrival at the palace. Beyond the fact he tended to look exceedingly uncomfortable at all times, she knew little else about him. “I believe we’ve come here for the same reasons.”

She watched him as he hoovered just inside the small room and wished,desperately, that either of them might walk away from such an uncomfortable conversation without seeming rude.

“It is a wonderful event,” Lucy agreed, nodding slowly. “We’ve never had anything even half as grand in Catalonia,” she continued. Was that the appropriate thing to say? She knew Ria and David wouldn’t want their hosts thinking Catalonia wasn’t able to throw a party equal to that of the Avenians. “But one would expect nothing less in honor of the Queen’s coronation,” Lucy added quickly.

“Tell me,” she asked, attempting to cover her potential blunder. “Do you enjoy dancing?”

Cecil felt a little of the tension lift from his shoulders at her polite words and he inclined his head, favoring her with the smallest hint of a smile.  “It is a splendid event, indeed, but it is quite tempting to seek some respite now and again,” he agreed, grateful to know she was of a similar mind, though the majority of her reasons were not known to him.  

Approaching her, he gestured towards the table overflowing with food.  “Is there anything I might fetch you, madam?”  He paused, recalling that she had shown signs of faintness on the dance floor, earlier, though her partner had fortunately managed to see to her assistance.  “Are you feeling quite well?  I can easily send for a physician.”

As she spoke of the festivities, Cecil managed a smile, nodding softly.  “A ruler can be coronated only once.  It is always a cause for sublime celebration,” he replied.  “I daresay Avenia hasn’t seen a gala on this scale since Her Royal Highness, Princess-” he shook his head, ruefully.  “Forgive me.  I meant to say, since Her Majesty the Queen’s parents were wed and her mother crowned as consort.”  Having been a tiny child at that time, however, Cecil had not been in attendance at that event and, doubtless, would not have been able to remember it even if he had been there.

‘We’ she said ‘in Catalonia.’  Cecil glanced downwards as he processed this information.  He wondered if, in her heart of hearts, the girl was not more Catalonian than Farnleian - and who could blame her?  Taken from home at such a tender age might induce anyone to shift their perspective.  He wondered, if he himself had been plucked from Avenia at such a time in life and sent to Catalonia, if he might not be in such a similar circumstance, himself.  How difficult a line to balance that must be for anyone, little less a ruler.

Refocusing on her actual words, Cecil nodded slightly.  He was disinclined, in general, towards a dance unless in an intimate setting (and, even then, it was not so much something to be desired as simply to entertain), but that hardly bore saying and he danced often enough on such occasions as these.  He’d learned early that it was better to participate than to stand to the sides looking on, whatever his own natural inclinations might be.  “It is most diverting, I find,” he replied evenly.  “And there is always something fine about moving in accordance with music.  Are you fond of dancing, Archduchess?”

Dawn | Cecil & Arabella

Sunlight edged its colors over a glorious world.  The white city glowed with splashes of red and orange as dawn broke over the new day.  Cecil always rose early, rose to accomplish his goals, rose to begin his day, rose to hear the birds twittering in the trees as they greeted the morning sun.  As the sun rose, Cecil took a his exercise, strolling through the gardens of Glorianus, mulling over the problems of yesterday and today and tomorrow.  He had begun his mornings like this for as long as he had had this position and the familiar tendrils of sunlight were a comfort to him now that everything was so different.

There had been a time when the late King would accompany him, or else Augustine, or sometimes both, but most usually he took these early steps alone, lost in his own thoughts.  There was a time when he had even relished those captured moments to himself, but now that they were both gone, he found he did not enjoy them nearly so much at all as once he had.  

The late King Cecil had esteemed too greatly for words and Augustine, well, Augustine had been his dearest friend from the cradle.  It was too lonely for words to have lost both in such a short and dramatic amount of time, a period of mourning that had also been punctuated by the death of Cecil’s own father.  Tragedies, it was said, always came in threes.  Cecil was grateful, if that were so, that there could be nothing further lurking around the corner to steal back whatever stolen happiness he had left.

Spotting another figure, Cecil stopped in his tracks to identify the creature in question, his breath stealing softly away as he recognized her.  “Your Majesty,” greeted Cecil, bowing.  “I did not expect to see you yet.”  He paused.  “Will you take the air with me?” he inquired, offering his arm.  “There is, in my estimation, no sweeter time of day or night than this; no period more contemplative.”

They had, both of them, a great deal of need for contemplation, particularly that variety undisturbed by their international guests who would, as was natural, try to sway their thinking this way or that.

Yes!!!!! I agree!!!!!! I feel like they are honestly pretty similar both in terms of position and honestly even some aspects of their personality, too (plus they both have those annoying feelings for their respective princesses/queens that are dumb and try to get in the way) BUT YES!!! I think that, despite their differences, cecil is probably someone who most understands what his life is like, haha!!!! And I feel like they probably see eye to eye on more things than they disagree on … the big question is, of course, do they agree on the important issues that need to be resolved!!!! charles is obviously, super pro waynflete and he will certainly try to persuade cecil to believe the same (i think he figures out pretty quickly that if anyone can convince the queen to side w/ them, it’s cecil)

that being said, I do think that charles knows that cecil will aLWAYS advise what he truly thinks is best for avania … even if that doesn’t always go hand in hand w/ what charles believes to be best for catalonia and honestly he for sure respects the hell out of that (even if he doesn’t agree)

re: Cecil’s take on the Catalonia situation, he’s a bit conflicted!!! (shocker!! ;D)  

On one hand, he does think that the Godolphins (or even the Argencourts) are the legitimate rulers by law ++ the late King threw his weight behind them and honestly Cecil lowkey hero-worshipped him and feels that if he thought a thing it was probably right!!!  But, more importantly, he’s not so sure that, as a monarchical nation, its smart to get into bed w a hierarchy that came from executing its previous ruler (and admittedly his feelings for Arabella ~do color this bc the idea of her in a situation like that is...honestly something he can’t deal w) ++ there’s the whole dubious freedom of Farnley thing to worry about

On the other hand, however, Catalonia, while obv still healing, it about as stable as it’s been in quite some time and it only seems to be getting stronger under the Waynflete regime and, as much as the other stuff may be the case, peace and prosperity is good for everyone.  However, there’s also the ethical issue that, given the revolution, the ppl (tho intentionally stirred up) have kind of spoke and therefore is it ethical to disrupt that????  Even tho it wasn’t Alexander they rebelled against which...further muddies the water hahaha

So yeah!!!  He doesn’t know!!!!!  And he wants to be sure before he takes a real stand of any kind.  So he’ll def listen to everything Charles has to say, but the same will be true of Alexander, and he will weight all of it in his own mind before deciding on anything.

BUt yesssss I agree that, in general, I think they agree, or at least get where the other person is coming from, and I deF see a huge amount of respect here!!  Like, even when they do disagree, Cecil knows that Charles made the choice he believed to be right rather than self-serving or anything and he knows that they’re both just trying their best and that’s all you can ask of anyone.  And Cecil will always respect the hell out of integrity!!!!

She’s so scared and feels so unprepared and while she’s 1000%%% determined to do her absolutely best for what’s right for her country, she’s often left unsure as to what the right thing is, and having someone like cecil to inform and support her is!!! amazing!!!!!!! she’d be so lost w/o him tbh!!!! She never thought she’d be queen and I feel like she certainly has a lot of regrets re: what she’s done w/ her time leading up to this! There’s so much she doesn’t know! And so much she has to do know/so little time in which to further educate herself!!! she certainly feels overwhelmed pretty much 24/7 but she’s also good at not letting those feelings consume her ++ I feel like cecil’s mere presence is key keeping her feel calm

ANYWAY! yeah, so I feel like they have known each other for a long time! I feel like her first impressions of him, when she was younger, was that he was too serious and stiff and a good man but also a little boring and definitely kind of old hahah … but as she got to know him, she probably still finds him a little serious (but also he’s her advisor and she wouldn’t want him any other way) but she also knows that he does have a sense of humor and that he’s kind and knowledgeable and, like her, only wants the best for Avenia!!!!!

all of that being said, she nEVER ever has considered him romantically at all!!!! And I don’t think she has any earthly idea atp that he looks at her that way! I feel like she’s super naive about a lot of things and love/romance is definitely one of them1!!! if someone told her that cecil was in love w/ her, she’d probably laugh and think it was a weird joke o.O

Ahhhhh honestly Cecil is so!!!!!! glad!!!!!! to be able to be there for her <333333  Like, she deserves help and support and he is 10000% 24/7 there for exactly that purpose!!!!!!!  But he’s also there to reassure her that, sure, she hasn’t had the upbringing that she might have had if she’d been heir all her life, but she can do this!!!!!!!!!!  And she doesn’t need to regret her life bc its taught her kindness and honesty!!!!!!  And other kings and queens have come to the throne w so much less to offer!!!!!  And there’s still so much time to learn!!!!!!!  And if she ever needs someone to lean on, she’s surrounded by ppl who are there for her!!!!!!!

Hahahah that totally makes sense!!!  And honestly those feelings are much more recent!!!!  I feel like, while I’m certain they knew each other etc, and were probably friendly, they probs didn’t see each other so much until after the death of her cousin when she became heir, about a year ago, and the feelings of ~that kind~ have sort of cropped up since then!!!  I also deF think they lowkey took him by surprise like!!!!! one time she smiled at him/in his general direction and he was like ‘oh shiT’ and also ‘so that’s what this is’ bc things had sort of been changing and he hadn’t really put it all together until then but now!!! he has!!!!! and honestly he wishes he hadn’t hahaha esp noW that he gets to help her choose a husband!!!!! yaaaAaAAY!!!!!!  (Cue someone being like ‘what about x dude for arabella???? he’s virtuous, handsome, and devoted to her!!!!’ and cecil being like *lizzie bennet voice* *picks at apple* ‘no i don’t think so he’s just, he’s just so...he’s just so rich’ and everyone’s like ‘.......’ jk jk  He’s def doing his best to be objective!!!!)

Another Dance | Cecil & Lucy

Balls and banquets and pageants and processions...Cecil could hardly catch his breath.  For days and weeks on end the coronation celebrations stretched on, feting both the new reign and the foreign dignitaries who had arrived to witness it.  Though he had, in many ways, begun his political career as a diplomat, Cecil was more given to behind-the-scenes politics than to the more public variety and he felt uncomfortable with all the monotonous socializing.  

Noting a chance to step back from the constant dancing of the evening, Cecil retired to the spot behind a few curtains where some chairs and a banquet of food was arrayed to take a deep breath.  It felt as though it had been weeks since he had had a moment to himself, although in truth it had been closer to several hours.

Further from the torches and the press of swirling bodies, the spot behind the curtains was cooler as well and Cecil breathed deeply, closing his eyes with exhausted contentment.  Opening them again, however, he spotted someone already occupying one of the chairs.  Cecil jumped.  Swallowing hard, Cecil approached her, bowing politely.  “Your Grace,” he greeted the Archduchess, quickly.  “I’m sorry if I’ve disturbed you.”  He gestured towards the dancing, forced a smile.  “I thought I’d take a moment’s leave from dancing to catch my breath.”

The pace of the dance was furious, laughter and talking reverberating about the Great Hall in turbulent cacophony.  “It, uh,” he cleared his throat.  “It seems everyone is having a wonderful time.”  It seemed like the thing to say, but he had little sense as to what he ought to say next, so he tried a smile and stopped.  Something else occurred to him that he ought to say.  “I hope, madam, you are enjoying the festivities?”

Oh yes! I do agree that any interaction up to this point would’ve been brief… I’ll have to talk w. lauren but my though is maybe the argencourt girls didn’t spend much time with people outside of the waynflete’s and their court persons? perhaps an initial greeting like “hi, the two leaders of farnley are right here and unharmed and happy!” and then off they go.

Honestly, Lucy probably gets it? she’s like “its cool, i would be wary of these people too… they did murder my surrogate father and take over the country but w/e” And even though she’s wary of people, she is fairly quick to come around and she’ll appreciate his effort. He’s honestly the sort too that she’d be prone to tease once she becomes more comfortable around him! (She may have calmed a bit since her illness but i think bits of her old personality pop out from time to time!)

So speaking from Ria’s pov, I can say that the Waynfletes wanted to keep the interaction between the Argencourts and foreign powers to a minimum for the same reason they don’t want Lucy to marry.  That being said, even tho the Argencourts ~are lowkey hostages, they don’t want them to ~feel like they are esp bc Dot will one day be consort of Catalonia and, they CERTAINLY don’t want foreign powers getting the impression that the Argencourts are hostages just bc...that’s not good for diplomatic reasons!!  So it was def a v fine line the Waynfletes were trying not to cross hahaha  So rolling them out briefly and then having them go their merry way does sound like something they’d want to do!!

Cecil is totally in love with Arabella!!!!!!  She deserves every good thing!!!  And he’s so sorry that she has to go through all of this but at the same time he doesn’t know a better person, little less anyone better suited to be just and noble and kind as a Queen.  That being said, I feel like he’s stressed 24/7 bc he’s worried she’s gonna get into some kind of trouble or situation and ofc it’s his job to prevent that.  And he doesn’t want to see her become more jaded but at the same time he can’t - and shouldn’t - protect her bc she needs to be true to self!!!!!!!! and flourish!!!!! and grow!!!!!  And ofc she, herself, is the Queen and so she needs to know!!!!!!!  But he also wants to look after her esp bc no one else is and everyone deserves someone to lean on and just !!!!!!!!!

Cecil isn’t great w emotions but he def has a lot of them alkdjfkljadskfj  That being said, he keeps it all tightly under wraps and has every intention of never, ever saying a word about his true feelings to her bc she needs him to be a lot of things, but never that and besides he knows he could never possibly deserve her </3

He can also come off pr stiff and formal esp bc he’s overcompensating bc of his feelings #facepalm and he’s def a cynic hahaha but he genuinely just wants the best for her and Avenia.  Fortunately for him, since she’s the queen, those things usually coincide, but he knows well enough that won’t always be the case and he genuinely doesn’t know what he’ll do then...

Anyway, I’m sure they’ve known each other for a few years, but I def think that the weeks since her father’s death/leading up to her coronation have obv thrown them together much, much more and now they see each other pr constantly where before it probs somewhat sparingly, since Cecil was usually off in Caermara w the King and she was usually at Castle Gloriet in the country.

So yeah!!!  How do you think Arabella might feel about him?

Cue me shedding a tear for P&P 2005 (like always <3)  Anyway!!  I doubt these two have met before?  Either way, I feel like their situation is def an odd one, I mean...her situation is just so out of the realm of what he’s used to and he’s honestly not sure how he should act?  Like, she’s an Avenian landowner, but should he be treating her like a foreign dignitary bc she’s w the Godolphins?  And how should he be treating the Godolphins, for that matter?  Etc hahaha  BUT!  Mostly, ofc, he’s just polite and he is interested to get to know her and, hopefully, her take on the Godolphins as well!

So I think this is the first time Lucy has been allowed to leave Catalonia since she was a child, so I’m not sure they would have met before? Unless at some point, Cecil found himself in Catalonia? Regardless, even if this is their first time meeting, I do think Lucy will be quite happy to meet him… (or anyone honestly? I don’t think she probably gets to see many new faces.) If she catches on to him trying to do things to make her a bit happier, she would just be so touched. I do think she might be a bit cautious of new people , so he will undoubtedly make her think a bit more positively about the outside world. 

I definitely should have been clearer about that hahaha  I was, indeed, suggesting that Cecil had been to Catalonia!  Esp when his father was the royal advisor, I can see where Cecil might have been sent on some ~ambassadorial~ campaigns on occasion.  That being said, I’m sure they were v formal and any real conversations these two might’ve had were probs fairly brief so I doubt they’d know each other well or anything like that (though ofc possible if you prefer!)

Cecil is a v considerate person!!  But he’s not always v good at showing his emotions, tho he tries!!  So this makes her wariness even more understandable as well!!  I mean, he tries and he’s ALWAYS polite but sometimes he can seem a lil chilly/distant or even brusque when he doesn’t mean to bc he’s invariably thinking about 98347589347587 different things and absolute focus is a concept that somewhat eludes him for the most part unfortunately.  That being said, I think he’s more likely to make a real effort w Lucy and Dot, so that probably helps smooth him over a bit, which is good.

Yes! Lydia has definitely been around court for a while. I think she would have given him respect for what she’s seen to be shrewdness, but I don’t know how close contact they would have been able to be in until recently when Lydia became one of Arabella’s ladies.

Because of that I can definitely see where Lydia would be like: “omg, CeCIL that BOOOORRREEE!!!” and like make faces to try and make her friends laugh. But like overall sees that he treats her lady well and seems like a good man, so wouldn’t like ~avoid~ him or anything.

But omg, if she ever caught a whiff of his snark OH BOY. Lydia would be ALL. OVER. THIS.

I could see him making some comment about one of the Waynfletes or something and Lydia being like: !!!!!!! “My dear sIR!! I am aPPALLED!! ….Come sit with me and let me tell you about how very dreadful Lady Honoria looks in chartreuse” and like trying to make a little snark team with him.

Plus if he ever told Lydia about his crush she’d be like: “YES. YES. YES. LET’S. DO. IT. GET. IT. CECIL!!!” and do whatever she can to help. lol

So yea! Those are my initial thoughts about these two!!

Aurora basically the Georgiana to his Darcy is literally everything I could wish for!!!

Rora always forcing him to sit and look over her atlas with her, teasing him about his feelings about her cousin (because you kNOW SHE KNOWS!!!! Or at least guesses), pulls him into dances at balls so he looks less dour, always joking around with him.

Also I could totally see him stepping up and like filling in the gaping void left by her brother’s death. I definitely think that for the few months to a year following his death, Rora was near inconsolable. She probably took to hiding around the palace, and maybe Cecil was always the best at being able to find her?

Just the image of Cecil gently hugging her and patting her hair is so very sweet to me.

Thoughts? I think these two will end up being ridiculously adorable tbh.

Honestly she does noT need to force him he’s delighted to share in her interests!!!!  And whenever he travels places he is sure to write detailed descriptions in his letters and come back and give even more detail!!!!  He probs makes her lil sketches and everything!!!!

OMg he def would!!!!!!  Like, after Augustine died, he was sure to be there for her every step of the way and like I feel like he probs even made a promise to him to look after her!!!!!  And anything he knows that Augustine used to do that she’d want to continue he’s all there like if, say, Augustine always made a point of bringing x thing back w him from anywhere he went for her, Cecil would start doing that, etc!!!  CECIL FINDING HER ALKDSJFKLJDSKAFD IM EMOTIONAL!!!!!!!  I love it and yesssss I deF feel like that was a thing!!!!!  And I feel like he knew when to just sit in silence w her vs when to coax or when to reminisce etc!!!!  And he was so understanding and so there for her lakdjsfkljd ughhhh
