The young boy turned around himself, letting out a soft childish giggle, his voice carefree and happy as he spoke. “…twenty! Ready or not, here I come!” He cheerfully announced, making his way towards a flower bush that was located nearby, peeking in it, hoping to spot a familiar face in there.
He felt slightly disappointed as he was only greeted with tiny bugs crawling over the leaves of the bush, but it certainly wasn’t enough to bring his mood down. With another wave of enthusiasm, the boy ran across the field, his gaze scanning everywhere around him.
“Where are you…?” He called out, starting to feel down due the lack of success in the game the two were playing.
It was then that he heard a small laughter, similar to his own, coming from behind a tree of woods nearby. Curious, and overcame with nearing victory, the boy made his way over, poking his head from behind a tree trunk, finally spotting his target.
“Got you!” He yelled happily, running over to the other person who was standing in the middle of a path that lead trough the woods.
The other person let out a soft giggle, motioning for the boy to come along, which he in fact did, passing by trees, deeper into the woods and further away from the exit.
“I heard a puppy bark for here! He must be hiding!” The soft voice said, and the little boy could feel a wave of excitement splash over him.
“Come on, hurry up!”
The two ran deeper and deeper, where there was lesser light, the darkness slowly surrounding them, when a loud scream broke trough the air, as the other pointed towards something that was laying on the ground.
The boy, confused, slowly approached the spot that was being pointed at, horror soon taking over his expression as his eyes gazed at a rotten animal body, its flesh no longer attached to the , now visible, bones, revealing the skeleton and insects that were crawling over it, eating the body of the little puppy that went missing a couple days ago.
BOY WOKE IN A START , breathing fast & frantic as though it were the night in dream . pale hand raises , it wipes cold sweat that coats forehead . head bows ; lingering thoughts drown all else . fingers curl - SOB RAKES FORTH . it’s silent , the thing young earl does quite rarely . mouth curled to keep back any & all cries . IT WERE AS THOUGH HE WERE CHILD ONCE MORE , seeing death for first time .
a deep breath fixes self & posture erects . it’s known crying will settle naught . another breath , it raises slender chest heavily before slowly letting pressure go .
delicate fingers slide plush blankets off thin legs . feet push into slippers , standing allowing oversize shirt to fall to knees . though there be chill in autumn night sky , boy does not grab jacket . undoubtedly sebastian heard boy wake – or sensed it . he’s no idea how demons understand masters presence , though it’s known to be true .
it’s not long walk , though slow steps make things slower than before . it’s a sorrow filled trek , thinking of the times he & brother would gleefully run through fields . it had been worth a scolding from mother & father when they returned many ‘a time , for running ‘round & being like normal children was fun . except that time . . .
he comes ‘pon spot with harsh stop , arms folding ‘cross thin mid section in sad attempt to keep in body temperature . perhaps it had been bad idea to leave without coat .
hue glances to small cross he & brother had made , smile crawling to lips . no joy shows from smile , instead it be sorrowful . minutes pass of silent observe before he turns .
———– HE STOPS . a rustling from leaves behind makes boy falter . ‘ . . . who goes there ? ‘ though body stays stiff , head turns , snagging glance of bushel noise comes from . though he be defenseless at moment , if any true threat were to show itself sebastian would come running — to save the meal of a lifetime .
With eyes focused on the sky, a small , yet very much confident, smile playing on his lips, the boy kept scanning across the bright countless stars that were slowly vanishing behind a big, dark cloud. He lost the track of time, it certainly has been a while since he arrived on that particular spot, only feet away from the place and view which left him and his brother scarred for months. Slight chuckle escaped his lips, as he heard the footsteps approaching the place. 'Was he really coming?' The boy felt a wave of satisfaction, his relaxed smile shifting and turning into a dark one. It has been so long. There was so much to do. There was even more to say. But the boy could wait. He wanted to take it slow. He was going to get what he wanted, even if it takes years and years for it. Eventually, the footsteps died out, and the lad realized that the other must've arrived at the right place. He lift his hand up, pushing the leaves and branches aside as he stepped onto the ground, right for the other to see him. Resisting the urges to loudly declare his comeback, the boy rather stood there, a small smirk on his face, waiting for his own brother to realize what has happened. The shock that was dominating the currents Earls expression send another wave of sadistic happiness over the true owner of the title. "I hope you warmed up the Mansion for me. " Was all he said, his humour dry, but the feelings that were burning up inside of him took a lot of energy to keep in. He waited for so long. For so damn long. And he was going to wait for a while more. But Hell, it was going to be worth it, for certain.
