Because my head is full of little Mairon running barefoot around Aule's workshop and Aule just laughing as little Mai-Mai brings him this tool and that tool and "Look, lookit what I found!" and Aule'd be so proud of him like "Yes, very good, little Mai-Mai, that's a very good hammer. That's a fantastic wrench. You're doing so well!" And just ewww I have so many emotions I need sleep
Sometimes it’s just to irk her husband. "Look at your nice, new mountains! All covered in lichens!"
Because he stomps, and glares, and tries not to laugh.
And sometimes, it’s not.
It, "I know you fucked up. Completely and utterly. And this is a hug. An enduring, wrapped all over your big, stupid mountains. Because being angry isn’t the same as not caring."
She drives him up his own damn walls, sometimes, with her need to cover every inch of his work in growing things. (And, really, the caves? Did she have to make things grown in the caves? They were perfectly nice how they were, thank you very much!)
Other times, he's just glad that he's not alone. That he knows, no matter how badly he misstepped, he won't lose her. Even if her greenery is sometimes a bit overwhelming.

-On the 14th of February, surprise your Valentine with a gift and reveal yourself to them! It could be a fic, a drabble, an edit, a fanmix, icons art or anything you feel is fitting! Just leave them something nice in their tag to brighten their day. You may find that you’ve made a new friend, or made an old friend very happy!
-I will do my best to make sure that people get Valentines that they are comfortable with. If you have a problem, send me a message. If you never receive your notice of who your Valentine is, send me a message. If you never hear from your valentine, send me a message. The point of this is to spread love and friendly feelings throughout the fandom— not to cause problems or make people feel left out.

[Caranthir] "Erestor, Thargelion has calmed enough that I thought I might come visit you once more." WIth a warm smile, Caranthir stepped forward, wrapping his son in his arms and pressing a kiss against the top of his head. "How have you fared, my beautiful son?"
Erestor looked up, his bottom lip wibbling slightly as he looked over his father. “Atya…” he whispered, gripping onto him tightly, letting out a small whimpering noise as his fingernails scratched into his fabric. “Oh Eru, you’re here. I was to worried I wasn’t going to see you again,” he choked out, burying his face into his neck. “Nh… I’m- I’m good. The studying- it’s… research… good.”
Erestor sniffed a little, then smiling as he tilted his head to bury his nose up against Caranthir’s neck, breathing in his scent. It wasn’t particularly perfumed, but just the smell of his father, of his washed clothes, his shampoo and the small particles of sweat he had accumulated during his journey. Erestor hoped he’d be able to collect that scent on a pillow, then keep that pillow unwashed for nights when he felt particularly lonely.
"Oh when I was there I would run through the halls trying to collect data on various meaningless aspects of life in Thargelion. Although much of it didn’t make sense to me as I was unaware of other ways of life… and I was utterly terrible at swordfights. I can’t believe I used to think I was a talentless idiot," Erestor uttered, his eyebrows furrowing at the memory as he cuddled up to his father, then puckering his lips out to very lightly press his lips to the base of Caranthir’s neck. "…I suppose I am fragile in one way, then. I’m terrible at fighting, often have knights accompany me on certain journeys."
"If there is one skill I would pray that you never need, my darling son..." Trailing off, he suppressed a shiver as he felt Erestor's lips against his neck. He took a slow, steadying breath deep into his lungs, holding still a moment before he tightened his grip on Erestor. "I will make for you a Thargelion in which you will never have use for such skills."
Though the promise was spoken unfalteringly, there was no easiness to it, no lightness to imply anything other than severity. His people kept their word. And he would protect his son from all darkness.
It took a moment longer than he would like to admit to drag himself from such thoughts, but the subtle motions of the warm ellon in his arms reminded him of where he was, and he let an archer's hand glide down his son's back, memorizing the slight curves and angles as it went.

"Yes! Oh Eru, yes," Erestor choked out, cursing himself for not being able to hold himself together in front of his father. He sniffed, wiping away the tears that leaked out before breathing deeply, he had to hold it together. "Please, my work can wait. You’re here, an honoured guest. You can stay with me, oh goodness…" He breathed deeply, then tugging on his arm. "How are you feeling? Hungry? Thirsty? Would you like to rest?"
Pausing a moment in the doorway, Caranthir took Erestor's face between his hands, brushing his thumbs gently over the ellon's cheeks. "Breathe, titta mine... We will go to your quarters, where you and I may speak more freely, but you must compose yourself before you may be seen in public. Come, now, I know my son is stronger than this--breathe, and dry your face, and when you have calmed, come to your quarters. I will wait there for you." With that, he pressed a kiss to his cheek and gave him a bright smile before pulling free of Erestor's arms.
Reawakening
With a great groan, Aulë awoke, pulling himself forth from the mountain's side to feel the wind on his face, feel the grass soft beneath unshod feet. Long slumber had done his mind much good, and rested as he was, he felt once more prepared to experience the world. It occurred to him, though, that perhaps he should have stored some set of clothing before he had taken to his rest--nudity hardly bothered him, but he knew of the Children's adversity to it, and so he tended to be more careful in regards to his own appearance.
Looking about the small clearing he had awoken within, he stretched stocky arms high above his head, grunting at the resulting series of pops. "Well," he murmured to himself, starting toward the nearest road, "hopefully, it won't be too busy of a day."

It's not particularly big--in fact, it's very, very small. But sometimes he can't keep from making things for Yavanna, and so he tries to limit himself space-wise, at least. A tiny pin, then, of bright gold, diamonds and amethyst and--most importantly--opal set here and there to bring forth a sweet butterfly and a couple of flowers.
The opal, he figured, would guarantee that the love and strength he poured into it would be for his wife, and only for her.
Where do I go from here?
Her husband was as immovable as a blasted mountain on his good days, and when he was half-soused it was more like trying to shift a continent! ”Nienna’s a dear, but I’d drive her mad. We both know that! And I couldn’t stand the melancholia, that’d drive me mad, too!” Her laugh was a little breathless, as she stumbled- carried forward a few awkward, lurching steps by her husband’s uneven gait.
“And Ulmo is happily mooning over Salmar.” She added, as they paused briefly, Aule’s weight braced between his wife, and the solid wall. ”We’ll talk about the rest of it when you wake up.” And then it was up again, the two of them looking utterly ridiculous as they stumbled and bumped down the hallway to their bedroom!
Once Aule was safely sitting on the edge of the bed, Yavanna straightened up, drawing a breath, and moving over to the window. ”It’s so stuffy in here!” Flipping the catch on the window with her thumb, Yavanna pushed it open, letting some of the spring breeze waft the cloying, stale air from the bedroom. ”Now, come on, boots off and into bed, love. I’m going to straighten things up a bit while you sleep, and then we’ll talk.”
Moving back to his side, padding barefoot across the floor, Yavanna smoothed her hands over his cheeks, pressing a kiss against his forehead. ”I love you, trouble and all- so rest now, and I’ll be right here when you wake.”
He tried to answer her... Tried to speak, but the liquor coated his tongue in lead until he could do little more than babble incoherently, lips sticking together and tongue plastered to the roof of his mouth.
After a while, he laid back, sighing through his nose and drifting off into sick-dreams, feverish dreams of fire and anger and keen achings.
When at last he came to, it was a mercifully moonless night, the clouds covering what few stars there were. His head ached something awful, and his mouth was thick, bile rising in his throat until he had to throw himself from the bed to fall to his knees over the chamber pot, splitting, burning pain shared between his heavy head and aching throat.
His head fell with a loud thump against the cool wall, and he panted heavily as his stomach churned again, what little was left (cheap whiskey and watery beer, mostly; he hadn't had the common sense to eat food while she was gone, no, that would have been sensible) bursting from his mouth, splashing the sides of the chamber pot and out onto the wall and floor around it.
-looks frustrated- I thank you, brother, for your well wishes. I really do. But this is not about Salmar and I. -lets out a breath- Though we have had our differences, you are my brother and I am worried for you. Take time for yourself to think and reflect. To calm yourself and your thoughts. And then... I would speak with Yavanna, for she is worried too. Be well, brother.
Yavanna... I will try. For her sake, I will try. *sighs, rubbing a hand over his face* Thank you, as well, brother... I do not know what will come from here, but if there is aught that I do know, it is that Yavanna will be there for me, whether I deserve her in this or not.
Thorin presented Aulë with a hammer he made himself. The handle was wrapped in leather and inlaid with rubies. "Happy Father's Day, maker. You have my thanks for all you've done for me and my kin."
"I..." Aulë paused, examining the hammer carefully. The craftsmanship was exquisite, and he turned it over in his hand, struck by the skill placed into its making. After a while, he looked back to Thorin and, moving quickly, pulled him into his arms in a tight embrace. Mairon, Curumo, Fëanoro had fallen... but the Dwarves? No, they... they turned out alright. And, with that, the ill mood he had fallen into seemed so utterly insignificant. He could not undo the past, and those fallen sons of his would always haunt his mind, but he had children who were strong and well, and it was to them he would turn his attentions. It was to them he would give his love.
"Thank you, mim ze. You have my love, now and always."
-would hug his brother if he could- Perhaps... Perhaps you should not think of it as a competition. Why must they be /her/ children and not /your/ children? Her creating them does not mean that you cannot help to raise them - to better them. Did you not help Father with the Children? You taught some of them to craft and now look at how they thrive under your tutelage. I know... I know my words likely matter little, for I have never had children as you and she have, but it is all I can think of.
*breathes slowly, trying to take in Ulmo's words* I understand... And I apologize. Only... I think perhaps it would be for the best if I made myself scarce today. It aches too keenly to think of all the children I have lost, and I cannot bear it today. Perhaps there are some among us who were never meant to be parents.
*pauses, shakes his head* I speak of dark things when you are so full with love, and it is unbecoming of me. Please, let my sadness not reach to you and Salmar. You deserve to be happy together, today and every day, brother.
My Maiar only talk to me because they cannot survive anywhere but within my depths. But that is beside the point. I am miserable and churlish on a good day, wrathful and antisocial on a mediocre day, and purely unapproachable every other day. Yavanna loves you for who and what you are and the two of us have never been anymore or any less than the best of friends. It hurts her when you say those things, but more importantly it hurts yourself.
It only worries me, brother, that all of my children... They all turn from me. And she has such a skill with little ones. It's not fair! *huffs angrily, red-faced and teary, and it's clear he's been crying for a while* It's not fair...
