The most embarrassing part of it all way that someon has spotted him, Lori had spotted him. “ if I played the scarecrow, you’d see him in a totally new light.” He winked mischievously. “Once your finished chocking on your gum, how about you give it a try?” He challenged

Lori rolled her eyes, accepting the challenge with a toss of her jacket. “You’re so on. Be prepared to be humiliated.” She stepped forward, tossing a coin to the ride worker, and hoisted herself up onto the mechanical bull. She gripped the rope, and thought back to the nights spent in the rodeo bar, in the back alley of a New York street, riding one of these things in front of the whole of her precinct during her days as a detective. “Hit it, Cowboy,” she yelled to the worker. As the bull jolted to life, Lori’s grip tightened. She was not going to fail.

“It’s impossible with that attitude.” Brian’s own attitude was matching but that wasn’t the point. He wasn’t the one with the ability. “Try again. But keep it zipped. I’ve got all day to wait.”

Lori felt like a scolded school child, but she wanted to extend her power. She closed her eyes, letting her mind take over. She thought about her ability, and whether it could be enhanced or not. She’d always done verbal enticement, but Brian wanted to explore it more. “Let me try something,” she said, holding her hands out to him, to take his, her eyes remaining closed. Perhaps a physical connection could be the first boost she needed to do non-verbal enticement.

“If you say so.” Ethan said as he followed her to the kitchen. He leaned against the far wall, his arms crossing over his chest as he watched her. “Not sick of you. Annoyed, sure. But you don’t make me sick.” In fact, he liked living with the guard sometimes. Mostly it was just so he could wake up and see a beautiful women automatically. And then fuck with her. “Whichever you’d like to provide me with this morning.” He said with a smile as he moved towards the island bar top. He leaned against the counter top with his elbows. “Anything you’d like me to help with?” He knew she’d probably say no, but he figured that asking couldn’t hurt.

Lori smirked, rolling her eyes and going ahead with making a variety instead of one set menu - blueberry, chocolate, cherry and plain. “If you believe you’re capable, you could make a fresh pot of coffee?” she teased, rocking her head sideways in a motion towards the coffee machine. “Otherwise, you know how I get when I don’t have my morning coffee.” Lori enjoyed the back and forth she had with Ethan - ever since she arrived, the two either get on like a house on fire, or clash heads. “But don’t add any of that flavouring stuff that you did the other week. That tasted like piss.”

Lorelai was born and raised in New York City, to parents who were completely different in their personalities: a surgeon and a Broadway wannabe. At the age of seven, there was little that could stop Lori from discovering the truth behind the disappearance of her chocolate from the cupboard. It was this that drove Lorelai to discover her natural ability to encourage a confession from suspected people. Her brother, Jakob was the main target of her confession inducement, since it was usually he that stole her toys and chocolate bars. However, when she was twelve and her brother disappeared, nothing she could do could bring him back. Her parents, Joshua and Roberta, were distraught by this traumatic experience, and it tore them apart. It was at this moment when Lorelai became determined to protect people - whether it be her family or random strangers. She would watch out their apartment window, watching paramedics, police officers, and firefighters zoom along the streets below, hoping one day to join them and help alongside.

Six months after Jakob’s disappearance, the Jennings family split - Lori remaining with her father, while her mother began to spiral into drug abuse. It wasn’t until her mother’s first suicide attempt that Lori, at fifteen years old, switched households and lived with her mother, hoping to get her onto the straight and narrow. By sixteen, Lori’s ability had manifested and adapted, finally understanding that she was the one enticing people to confess their secrets, and she was able to make sure she knew when her mother was about to spiral again. She would coax the confession that she had the urges to use, and instantly jump into action and make sure her mother stayed on the straight road to sobriety. She also used her ability to help around the city, and she quickly formed friendships with other mind manipulators - though she seemed unable to entice them to confess any of their secrets. Maybe their mind was blocking hers.

At eighteen, being a carer/watcher for her mother wasn’t her intended plan. She always wanted to find her brother, understand his disappearance, and who/what took him. So when the opportunity came up for her to join the police academy, she didn’t falter in accepting. Even within the police she found ways of getting people to spill the beans when they had done something worth convicting them of. Her ability to get a confession from suspects meant her caseload was forever at the minimum and she ranked to Detective within 5 years - one of the quickest known. Five years later, a stranger arrived at her apartment door, showing her what she truly was, and gave her an amazing choice. Join a community of people just like her, help people who were in need, and potentially- with the help of the other people there- find her brother. It was with this, she joined the Guard, taking her police work with her and using all the skills learned to protect the people of Lake Grimstone.

» CONNECTIONS

JEREMIAH POPE - Out of all of the people in Lake Grimstone, Jeremiah is the one that Lorelai is closest to. The relationship that blossomed was that of a strong friendship that Lorelai feels could withstand anything.

KATHERINE JACKSON - Lorelai feels a certain connection with the younger girl. She doesn’t know much about her life but she’s hoping that will change. 

ZOEY DODD - Lorelai is intrigued by the fact that Zoey doesn’t possess a power. She has befriended Zoey and does her best to make sure that the girl feels comfortable and safe in the town.

Lori didn’t care for festivals. But she’d made the effort for this one. She was walking away from her stint at the kissing booth, popping some chewing gum between her teeth when she saw Wentworth. It took enough of her energy to stop herself from choking that when she tried to stop laughing it didn’t work. “Are you auditioning for the school play? I hear it’s Wizard of Oz this year,” she joked.

There wasn’t an ounce of emotion on Brian’s face, keeping himself as neutral in his expression as possible to not give anything away to Lorelai. “I’ll tell you that this is a waste of time.” Why did the universe want him to fail so badly? “No speaking means no speaking. Anything from now might as well be considered null and void.”

Lori sighed and slumped back into the chair. “It’s impossible for me to control non-verbally. It’s never been done before. Write that in your notes.”

Her comment made him snort. “The confession you’d get out of me, if you could use your power, would not be one of undying love. I can assure you that, doll face.” Ethan watched as she stepped around him, wrapping her silk gown around her as she did so. “I don’t drink every day. I’m not an alcoholic.” Ethan insisted, an annoyed tone of voice showing through. “So you’re going to yell at me and then make me breakfast?” Ethan asked as he followed her down the stairs. “I don’t get it. Either be annoyed and mean, or be nice. You being both just throws me off.” God, he didn’t understand women.

“Gots to keep you on your toes,” she smirked, grabbing a hair tie off the sideboard as she walked into the kitchen and swiftly pulling back her hair. “You’re not getting sick of me already, are you? You were well of what you were signing up for.” Lori made quick work of washing her hands and getting the frying pan from the cupboard. There was a mutual understanding that Ethan kept out of Lori’s kitchen, and outside of the house, Lori kept out of Ethan’s head. “Blueberry or chocolate chip?”

His eyes are quite attractive. She stared blankly into Brian’s eyes. They were trying something for his study. She was attempting to get a confession out of him without speaking a word. So far, it wasn’t working. “Tell me something,” she whispered, very very faintly under her breath, but she knew he had heard her.

“As if I would. I’m not keen on watching you go to the bathroom, Lorelai.” Ethan chuckled as he took a step back from the bathroom door. He folded his arms across his chest as he waited and watched as she yanked the door open and pointed a finger in his face. He rolled his eyes, lifted a hand, and grabbed her finger, pushing it away. “What have I said about pointing fingers at me?” He let out a sigh and then rolled his eyes yet again. “I feel like you just… forget that we can’t use our powers in our own home.” He tilted his head to the side. “I was drunk last night. You can’t expect me to aim very well when I’m drunk.” 

“Which is lucky for you, I can’t get you to admit your dying, profound love for me,” she said with a flick of the hair, a smirk on her face as she stepped around him and fastened her silk dressing gown closed. “And when are you ever not drunk? Pancakes for breakfast, whether you’re eating or not,” she called as she headed downstairs of their pretty roomy home. This was the usual for them, apparently. An argument before breakfast, there was usually a little bicker after lunch, but then they’d be the best of friends for the remainder of the day. Of course, their evenings usually consisted of alcohol and some daft movie, but they did enjoy the finer things in life.

When he heard his name, Ethan frowned and then let out an annoyed sigh as he walked towards where Lorelai was calling for him. His frown deepened on his features as he realized that she was in the bathroom. He pushed the door open slightly but didn’t peak in. “Yes, oh dearest roommate of mine?” He really wondered why he even chose to room with the guard. She intrigued him but that was about it. 

"Dont come in!" she yelled even louder, throwing a roll of paper in the direction of the open door. When the door closed again she finally adjusted herself, relieved herself and washed herself. She yanked the door open, finger pointing in his face. "If I've told you once I've told you a THOUSAND times. Put. The. Seat. Down." The truth is, when Ethan had agreed to room with her, she believed it to have been a drunken mistake. Sort of like having a one night stand with someone and later regretting it happened. "And you're supposed to be a master marksman. Why can't you learn to aim for the bowl!"

Rubbing her eyes, at early dawn, Lori stepped into the bathroom. She was barely awake, stifling a yawn. She turned, dropped her draws and sat down. She wasn’t expecting to be sucked into the toilet as she was. Her eyes shot open fully, and a growl echoed from her throat. “ETHAN!”

Katherine didn’t expect to listen to any more confessions, but the more she did actually listen, the more she felt as if she could perhaps confide in the other woman. Perhaps it was the weird atmosphere, or she was truly, and finally going insane and deciding to trust someone, that she knew for about twenty minutes. “Why would you think that everything you touch turns to shit? You didn’t have a choice. It wasn’t your fault that your mother turned to drugs, and that your father left. None of it was your fault.” She shook her head, as she spoke up, “You’re strong. You’re very strong, and I admire that about you, because I-…I do it to myself, I keep doing all those things to myself, because sometimes I think that I can’t feel anything anymore. I want to feel something, you know? Anything.” She sighed softly, as she bowed her head to her chest, glancing at the other through masses of lashes, “Twenty one.” She said, as she took out a pack of cigarettes from her bag and placed one between her lips; hands digging for a lighter, “Don’t go saying that I’m still young, and life is just beginning and I can turn things around and..yada yada. Just don’t.”

“Come on, let’s go and get a coffee and a cinnamon roll,” Lori offered the younger woman, knowing that the side of the road was no place to have these kind of conversations. She remained quiet for the time being, and assuming Katherine was following, walked into her favourite cafe - not because there was never a queue, but because they had a small pod in the back where no one could eavesdrop.

“My mother used to tell me it was my fault he left - my dad. Saying that being who I was scared him. Sometimes that hurt, enough to make me think that maybe I wasn’t worth much.” Lori had never opened up to someone about when she was 15, struggled to fit in because she was always causing people to open up. “However,” she continued, propping one knee up when they occupied said pod, and stirring a couple of pouches of sugar into her Cappuccino, “I found someone who helped me through the rough times. I was 22 when I, finally, no longer felt worthless.” Maybe Katherine just needed to find someone to help her feel wanted, adored and appreciated. “And being young doesn’t mean you have your whole life ahead of you - I always got told I was stupid for joining the police, that I could be killed so young. I was where I wanted to be.”

“Disease can spread in a matter of days… weeks… months. It doesn’t take as long as you might think. The wrong thing gets out and that’s it, humanities done for. Trust me, I’m an expert.” Zachariah smirked, looking over the other. It was clear she just didn’t want to believe that it was true, because a year ago things had been fine out there but… A lot could change in a year. 

Lori shook her head and turned back to stare out along the quiet road. It was just too quiet. “Why has there been no announcements for a while? What are they waiting for. They just need to tell us what’s going on.” She hated not knowing things, especially since she had grown up knowing everything. “TRP are worse than the Government for keeping secrets.”

Ethan’s eyebrows rose as he looked at the guard in disbelief. And she bought that from the government? His eyes rolled at her. He couldn’t tell if she was genuinely this way or if she was being dramatic. Either or, she was obviously upset and angry. “Well they got you here any way they could and you have a power. So they won’t be letting you leave as of yet. Even if it’s what TRP has promised.”

“And you want that person… to be who? Me?” Ethan scoffed as he folded his arms across his chest as he stared at her. “Our connection to the outside world is nothing right now, Lorelai. There’s only signal in here. Everything else is down. How do you expect to get in contact with the state or the military to do anything?” He was genuinely curious. “A warzone?” He asked. “So what, you’re willing to die to try to get out of here? Or even get everyone else killed?” He still barley knew the woman. He couldn’t tell if this was actually how she was feeling, if it was an act to try to get him into a trap, or if she was just… blowing things out of proportion in her mind. He genuinely couldn’t tell. “What makes you different than TRP, Lorelai? We’ve already made this town into a warzone before.”

Lori reluctantly listened to his logic and reasoning, and knew she was just being stubborn. She hated being in this place - and if what was happening on the outside was true, it meant her family were either dead or suffering. She didn’t know which would have been worse. Eventually she relented, her body sagging to the floor and her knees tucking into her chest. She just wanted to see her mum again, hug her dad again, and get back to doing what she did best - hunting killers by day, looking into her brother’s disappearance by night. “I just wanna go home,” a broken whisper, sounding like Lori, cracked through the damp air. A reflection, resembling a girl she once knew, stared back at her from the rippling lake. 

“How long have you been here, Ethan?” she asked, almost certain her weakening body language was showing her unseen vulnerabilities. But if there was one thing she could do, despite being upset, was getting people to tell her what she wanted to know. “Does it get easier the longer you’re here, or does it just slowly take away a piece of you everyday, until there is nothing left but darkness and hatred for the world?”

Ethan was surprised that out of everyone questioning the government’s intentions, he hadn’t expected it to be a guard. Weren’t guards supposed to be loyal to their employers? That’s why he hadn’t joined the guard. Well, not really. He just didn’t want to be part of the government. He wasn’t power hungry. Nor did he like controlling what others did. He’d rather join the chaos and recklessness than try to stop it. “Good question.” Ethan said and then shrugged his shoulders. He didn’t know the answer.

“What?” Ethan asked, glancing back towards the guard. “What do you mean you’re not sticking around?” He honestly couldn’t believe what he was hearing. A guard going rogue? “It didn’t work out the first time with TRP. No offense, but I don’t see how it would work out with you. They barely took over. Barely. I’m fucking surprised they are still in power.”

Ethan didn’t know much about what she had to ask, but she wasn’t surprised. She shouldn’t have questioned someone who wasn’t higher ranking. Maybe she could work her magic on someone higher in the food chain. “The only reason I came here was to get help in finding out something about my brother’s disappearance. And they promised me that I would find something, or someone, who could help. They’re lying assholes and I’m done being one of their pawns.” 

Lori hadn’t expected the anger that risen in her stomach, her hands were clenched and she was pacing. She barely knew Ethan, yet here she was pouring her emotional rage onto him. They have had maybe 5 conversations worth noting. “I’d just need someone who can control decisions. I can get the secrets that the government want to keep, I just need someone by my side who can force someone to make the decision to open the gates for me. Or whatever it is keeping us here.” She stopped and looked at him, a deadpan seriousness on her face. This was something she was determined to do. “Are you going to join me? We keep the circle small. Then we get help from the outside - the state, the military, anyone that can turn this place into a warzone. Then we get everyone out.”

Wow, the other woman was quick to share. It was something that truly baffled Katherine, and left her mouth opened in sheer surprise. Judging by her own nature, she wouldn’t trust a single soul with so much as to tell them what she had for breakfast, but here she was talking to someone she met five minutes ago, listening to a confession of a murder, as if they were talking about the whether. Why did people feel the need to overshare? There was a line that strangers shouldn’t cross.  “Why are you telling me this?” She mumbled in sheer frustration; brows furrowed slightly, head tilted. “And no, I haven’t, but I’ve tried. Do I get any points for that?” The words shot off her mouth so fast, she didn’t even have time to process it. Why was she admitting to that? Of course, it wasn’t as if she was openly going to admit that it was herself, that she tried to kill, but the sheer fact that she mentioned it, was truly messing with her. Something was definitely off here. 

Lori was shocked by the confession, and couldn’t decide whether she’d induce the confession from the younger girl, or it had been said willingly. However, Lori could see a glimmer of herself in the other - and decided on a tactical approach. “I’m telling you this because I was once where you were, mentally. I used to thing that everything I touched turned to shit. I lost my brother when I was twelve, my mum turned to drugs and my dad took off on us a few years later.” Lori forced a smile, so the other knew it wasn’t all that bad. “But I took that as a challenge: I helped my mum to get off the drugs, and I got a job in the police department so I could help find kids who had been abducted.” She didn’t pry on who the other had tried to kill, maybe that was a story for another day. “How old are you? If you don’t mind me asking.”

Hearing the woman’s words, Anika excitedly clapped her hands. “OH.” She said, leaning in closer, a smirk playing on her lips. “Now that is the most exciting thing I have heard all day.” She herself didn’t have secrets as she tended to always speak her mind, but it got her thinking. “I think I would love to keep you by my side. See, I can shapeshift. and the two of us… Oh honey.” She sucked in her lower lip, her eyes beaming with excitement. “My name is Anika. It is such a pleasure.” 

Lori arched an eyebrow at the other girl, tilting her head slightly in thought of what could be running through that pretty little head. “What are you planning? And I’m Lorelai, Lori for short. Don’t think about using me as soon weapon of mass revenge,” she added, smirking at the other. It wasn’t like Lori was innocent, but she didn’t want to be involved in someones games.
