Imagine Matsukawa and Hanamaki dating for years and being the kind of couple who says “I’m breaking up with you” at every minor inconvenience

Hanamaki gapes at Matsukawa. The teen yawns sleepily and the milk sloshes around in the bowl. “I’m breaking up with you,” Hanamaki gasps. “You pour milk before the cereal, you monster.”

“Babe no,” Matsukawa says flatly, grabbing the cereal box. “I can change.”

“Hiro, I’m breaking up with you. I need a real man in my life, not a penniless broke in jail. Iwaizumi-hold me!” Hanamaki looks offended and Iwaizumi looks smug, throwing an arm around Matsukawa.

“I have money, property, AND your chick.” Oikawa joins Hanamaki in looking offended.

Hanamaki throws his monopoly piece at a chortling Iwaizumi and mutters, “I fucking hate this game.”

Matsukawa stands over Hanamaki with a leer. “I’ll break up with you,” Hanamaki threatens, chest heaving with exertion. There’s a disgusting amount of sweat running down his face. There’s shouting behind them.

Matsukawa raises his gun and points at Hanamaki’s chest, with a breathless laugh. “Worth it.” He pulls the trigger and Hanamaki’s chest is splattered with blue paint. He falls back with a groan.

“Revenge!” Oikawa roars, leaping out from behind a pillar and allows a volley of red paint against Matsukawa’s unguarded back.

Matsukawa grunts and falls to his knees and falling atop Hanamaki with all his weight. The teen wheezes, “Serves you right, bitch.” Oikawa sprints off and they can hear Kindaichi scream in the distance.

“Are we back together now?”

“Yeah.”

Matsukawa sighs tiredly. “Nice.”

i know i'm about ten years late to any haikyuu fandom infighting (and no one will see this) but i need to scream into the void for a bit about something that i've been noticing a lot recently. disclaimer; i fucking love iwaoi, they're one of my fav ships of all time and obviously everyone's interpretation of the character traits and dynamics are fine and valid and all human-made art is beautiful etc etc.

but pleeease for the love of god can we stop reducing oikawa's character to just being a pouty crybaby shallow silly whiny insecure drama queen twink who needs his Stoic Masc bf to stroke his hair and feed him milk bread or some shit. like i GET IT he's all of the above sometimes but i've seen so many fan works that don't give him any depth or maturity or internal conflict beyond "mean iwa-chan >.<" remarks. i find it soo fucking simplistic and kind of offensive to reduce such an objectively strong and complex character into the most surface level smol-gay-bean shit to the extent that it's one of the most pervasive fanon interpretations of him..

idk man its about 2am and i'm tired of my fav guys being done a disservice like this. sorry this comes across as so mean-spirited, i genuinely love the haikyuu fandom so much and there's so many incredible artists and writers in the space!! i don't think that writing oikawa (and iwaoi by extension) to have these traits is a bad thing at all but like. that can't be the entirety of their relationship. it's fine and cute in fluffy one-shots, but it doesn't entirely hold up once you're trying to establish a solid story with conflict and believable character motivations. if you're still here then thanks for reading this far, and sorry to my moots for non-consensually exposing you guys to sleep-deprived haikyuu shipping discourse in the big 2026 (it will happen again) <3
