The Dogs of Babel (A Novel)
Carolyn Parkhurst, the author, is a woman who understands some of our most troubling feelings and is able to express them through her writing in ways that causes the reader to become submerged in them.
Paul Ransome is a widower struggling with his grief. His wife, Lexy, has died accidentally in their home and all alone, except for one witness who happens to be their Rodeshian Ridgeback, Lorelei. The novel is composed of a series of flashbacks of Paul and Lexy’s relationship as Paul tries to understand what happened on that day. At the same time, Paul also takes on new research to get answers to all of his questions. He spends his time trying to teach his dog, Lorelie, to talk. This novel was not what I expected.
Although it is very sad, I appreciated the role of Lorelei as man’s best friend and how she grieved as well. Read this book but take breaks to play with your dog.
