Jade had been thinking about that for a long time. “I would tell her she needs to stop this. She must know this isn’t right and this will only cause farther suffering. The young merprincess didn’t deserve her death, but does she really want to soak her daughters name in innocent blood? Whether it was a shadowhunter or downworlder that killed her there’s no need to have this much bloodshed.”
“Alright, sure. That could work, maybe. Except - let me play devils advocate for a minute - we don’t really know anything about the merfolk, not really - most are reclusive at best, supposedly like to drown people for fun, and have voices that can practically enslave people. How exactly do we know that she doesn’t want to do exactly that? Plus, innocence is kind of a subjective thing - where you see an innocent man she could see a murderer, or at the very least someone that stood by and let the murderer get away with it.”
the first time raine had seen her devour one of her sandwiches, the brunette was fairly certain her best friend had turned green. now, she knew better. she knew it was heaven in a cheese filled mouthful. “parabatai’s honor.” she teases, doing the gesture for the mundane scouts. grabbing a dishcloth from the side, she chucks it at her friend’s head as she returns with the sandwiches. “hey !! rude. i was totally letting you win the race. we were racing by the way.”
“oh, riiight,” she barley managed to stifle a laugh as she rolled her eyes, reaching out to take the sandwich from her. “we were totally racing, how could i forget. well, next time you really shouldn’t hold yourself back for lil’ ol’ me - i wanna see if i can beat you fair and square.”
“Maybe the people that could are on her side of the argument. The only one that’s not is her second eldest. I’m not sure if our initial is correct on that though.”
“Look even if you could reason with her - how exactly to you plan to get to her? Last I heard she’s surrounded by an army up in that mansion she’s got out on the beach. And if you did get past them, what would you even say?”
“totally bad luck.” aspen nods in agreement, stealing a gulp of soda before she moves over to the fridge. pulling out the things she needs, she puts together two more of the chaotic sandwiches she developed while high in her teenage years. “you’re just lucky i let you know the secret recipe. take it to the grave, rainy.” she chuckles, making a zipping motion with her mouth over her shoulder. lips part in a gasp of mock horror. “are you suggesting I’m getting podgy ??”
lorraine grins as she watches the other compile her insane breakfast, shaking her head at the realization that she personally was looking forward to eating one. she mimicked locking her lips and tossing the key behind her, trying her best to keep from laughing. “don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.” she gave a slight shrug and a mock-serious expression covered her features. “more commenting on the fact that it took you three extra minutes to catch up to me yesterday, but if the shoe fits...”
grin splits across her expression despite the half chewed mouthful buried in her cheek. “do you wanna take back our friendship bracelets for the betrayal ??” she teases, swallowing quickly. “alright-” aspen plonks the remainder of her sandwich back on her plate and pushes up from her seat. “since you’re you i’ll make you one. plus I could eat like ten more so…”
“you know, i would do that - unfortunately i’m a total boss at tying knots, so we’d have to cut them of and i’ve heard that’s bad luck.” she gives a slight shrug and shakes her head, managing to pull off an honestly disappointed look for all of ten seconds before she returns the other’s grin. “since i’m me i’d be grateful. still - if you eat ten more i’ll make you run laps with me instead of normal training. can’t have demons outrunning us."
“Can you explain that again? I think I got it I just…” Watching the others train was the best Lyssa had in terms of learning, occasionally a few took pity and tried to help her, but it usually ended like this, with the blue-haired beauty on the floor confused as to how exactly she got there, “Maybe I don’t, but I’m close! I can feel it.”

Raine couldn’t help but roll her eyes - though it was clearly more amusement than irritation - as she offered a hand. “Right, super close. C’mon, we’ll go again after a water break. Maybe it’ll all sink in while you take a minute to breathe,” she teased, a faint grin on her lips.
“what don’t look at me like that-” aspen grumbles through a mouthful. “a nacho-cheese-fries-grilled cheese is totally a breakfast food.”
raine continues to stare, face perfectly passive as she watches the other for several long moments. “you’re right, i totally wasn’t judging your food choice. i was judging my friend choice, because a real friend would’ve made me a n.c.f.g.c too.”

goes by raine ( pronounced like rainy ) with her friends. will answer to lor, lora, raine, or nightridge, unless you’re her dad in which case she’ll ignore you 99% of the time and probably yell if you call her anything other than lorraine.
when she was tiny her father was blackmailed into giving away her half-sister away, which devastated him. less than a year later raine’s mother died, leaving her father to care for her on his own.
he ended up leaving the clave and being stripped of his runes, at which point he fell off the radar to hide raine away and raise her as a mundane.
he spent a lot of time training her how to fight - generally leaning more towards self defense than anything else - but continued to hide the shadow world from her in an attempt to keep her safe.
when she was 13 years old, a werewolf from her father’s past came out of the woodwork with the intention of getting revenge. he attacked raine while she was out late one night - walking from a convenience store to a friend’s house.
a shadowhunter happened to be passing through the area on patrol and was able to stop the wolf, who bolted. the shadowhunter had to make the choice between saving lorraine, who was very nearly dead but clearly still trying to hold on, or chasing the wolf.
they ended up taking raine to the institute, where she was cared for and brought back to health, and when she didn’t turn at the next full moon she was given the choice - stay and become a shadowhunter, or return to her father and never look back.
while she considered her options, the shadowhunter that had saved her filled her in on the basics - what shadowhunters were, what they did, all about the shadow world and downworlders.
she went home, packed a bag, and hasn’t spoken more than ten words to her father since then.
she ended up changing her name from henson to nightridge when she officially joined the institute - partially in an effort to distance herself from her father, but also because henson was just a false name her father had taken.
she has a lot of self confidence issues due to massive scarring across her torso ( namely her stomach ), as well as self inflicted scars. because of the scars she’s always wearing long-sleeved shirts/sweaters/jackets and high-waisted pants/shorts, even in the dead of summer.
might have a parabatai? but idk yet ofiajf
to this day she trains harder than she probably needs to - she’s skilled in most forms of combat bc this loser never rests, but she’s convinced she can’t stop or slow down until she can beat everyone else ioengaof.

“but then again it can’t be all bad, all the time.” she shrugged, watching mundanes of all kinds experiencing all kinds of emotions, some were laughing, some were smiling, others frustrated, some shadowhunters thought that they were so very different than mundanes, but they still had some of the same problems when it came to relationships and basic things of life. after all they were still half human. “they have choices, they’re lives aren’t dictated by a heavenly duty like ours. our lives are set for us, that type of choice, sometimes it sounds nice.”
“that out there?” she pointed to the park, not bothering to look at the people. “none of that is any better than the life we’re in. good moments, bad ones, ones that you don’t even think about - we all have them. and speaking as someone that’s been on both sides, there is nothing you could offer me to get me back into that world. they don’t have a ‘heavenly duty’, but they have to maintain jobs, obey laws, struggle through their day to day, just like us. being one of them? it sucks.” being one of them had nearly gotten her killed, and she hadn’t even understood what was happening. at least here she could see the world. here she was less afraid.
“ superheroes ..? ” shaking her head, faye turned her eyes away from the tv. “ you’re right, i do regret it. aren’t they characters that wear underwears on top of their tights and give themselves absurd names ? ”
“no... well, sort of.” raine sighed, shrugging slightly. “they used to, but it was like....spandex bodysuits? they’re better now, like this one wears jeans and a leather jacket usually. some still have the suits, but they’re less spandex more... ballistic fiber? or something?”

the shadowhunter leaned back against a tree, legs crossed over the other. her eyes gazed over the park that laid close to the los angeles institute but far enough so that only mundanes ventured here but no closer. she sighed audibly, watching families and friends walking about, mundanes not having cares past such small things. “wonder what it’s like, growing up a mundane these days.” she mused out loud.
“not half as great as you’d imagine, honestly.” raine had paused not far from the other, following her gaze to the park and wondering for half a moment if any of the people she used to know were out there. “sure they don’t have to fight literal demons on the reg, and most of them are blissfully unaware of all of this-” she gestured vaguely at the world around them- “but they’ve got their own problems, and sometimes not knowing is more dangerous than knowing.”
