Subaru grew up being self sufficient. He had to, seeing as he was taking care of both himself and his mother. Not that Suzumi Kato wasn't a wonderful mother -- she just wasn't quite all there all the time. And Subaru learned to cope. Because it was just the two of them with no father in sight (Mother always said he was akitsune and I always indulged her flights of fancy. Even the ridiculous ones.), it feel on Subaru to be man of the house. It caused him to grow up rather quickly. Music ended up being Subaru's outlet. He lived it, breathed it n and played. Piano lessons were mandatory in grade school, but when he proved to be a prodigy, he was quickly ushered into private lessons and competitions. It was expensive, but they made it work with the help of scholarships. Life would have continued this way had it not been for the accident; Subaru still doesn't like taking about it, a year after his mother's death. When faced with the choice of staying with his mother's sister and her family in or becoming emancipated early, Subaru chose to take care of himself -- partly because he's been doing it for years, but also because he and his aunt can't get along (her husband is a freakin' saint and their daughter is precocious and cute). He sold the house and the furniture, keeping only his piano, books, and some personal mementos to Atherton. He hasn't been living at the Terraces long, but he likes it. It's just a pity that even with the reasonable rent and a roommate, he's still trying to make ends meet without dipping into his savings from the insurance money and the award money from competitions.

Despite how nonchalant he acts, he's actually a bit of a spazz on the inside. He also has some insecurities about his father. Subaru is also an avid tabletop gamer. He doesn't look the type but he was actually introduced to it by some older pianists who had a D&D group made entirely of musicians who only met up at competitions. Maybe when he gets to know people in the building, he'll set up a group...

"Do I really have to? Ugh, fine. Some of my fellow pianist friends might remember this, but I try really hard to bury this story. It's only because I like you that I'm telling you at all, alright? See, my first competition, I was such a nervous wreck. The moment I finished my piece, I ran off stage and threw up in the nearest thing that looked like a trash can. Unfortunately, I threw up in one of the judge's hats. You could imagine how much worse I felt wheb I realized what I did. Thankfully, the old man had a sense of humor. Every time I see him on the piano circuit, he brings it up. I really wish he wouldn't. And what is this guy still doing, judging piano competitions? Sure he's known as the vmodern day Mozart', but he's also like 103 and a few keys short of a keyboard if you know what I mean."
