[Fiddling with the rings on her fingers, Cassandra waited patiently for her chai latte. When the barista called her name, she made her way to the counter only to find her cup taken by a man standing next to her.] Uhm, excuse me, Sir. That order is mine. Thereās my name written on it. Cass with the little cherry blossom. [She smiles softly.] Thatās me.
[Raises brows looking at the cup then back at her.] Oh! Iām sorry [Sighs loudly.] Too bad I donāt get a nice doodle like this one. I thought the barista was hitting on me, but was confused as to why she would draw a flower. [He shakes his head as he hands her her cup.]
[Cassandra widened her eyes, looking at the cherry blossom in his hand then at him. Shaking her head, she smiled softly but a bit hesitantly.]
Uhm⦠this is too good to be true. I mean⦠why do you have that with you? Itās beautiful⦠I⦠Where did you get it from? And⦠why do you have so much in your fanny pack?
[Giggling, she slowly reached out, barely touching the petals with her index, a soft sigh escaping her lips.]
Whatās your story, Mr. Old Soul? You said you just moved here, is that right? Oh! The park is right there!
[Crossing the street, they made their way into the nearest bench, shadowed by a large tree. Cassandra kept her eyes locked on his, showing him that he had her full attention.]
Youād be surprised to know how much could fit in there. [He giggled as he closed his fanny pack and sat down on the bench next to you.]
I take a lot of photographs on my travel. I wouldnāt call myself a photographer, but I like to capture things as they truly are. Things that we might not notice unless we pause and stare. One time on my way to a McDonaldās in Tokyo, yes I was very unhealthy back then, anyway⦠I noticed this huge cherry blossoms tree that took up so much space in the middle of the street and I just couldnāt help but think how even though the flowers fall fast, the tree itself is so strong and can live up to 250 years. Please interrupt me if you feel bored of my babbling.
[He giggled then shook his head fast, but continued speaking when you seemed to be immersed in his talk.]
I liked the symbolism that it represents. [He then says a French quote āMĆŖme si les pĆ©tales tombent, l'arbre reste.ā]
[Cassandra looked in his eyes with interest. Maybe others would have found what he said boring but she didnāt. On the contrary, it was his words but also his manner of speaking that captivated her during those few minutes.]
I couldnāt agree more. [She smiled softly.] Bien que lāarbre reste, chaque pĆ©tale a vĆ©cu son destin. Elle est nĆ©e, a fleurie puis mourut. That being said, I think⦠I just want to live like one. Blossom during my lifetime before I die.
[She exhaled loudly, running her fingers through her hair, a few locks that fell from her messy bun, before looking back at Casto.]
Life is way too short for it to be wasted⦠I mean⦠it might be too idealistic or letās say optimistic, only thinking about your own happiness. Yet, being happy isnāt directly linked to being healthy. Uhm⦠One must value their well-being too, right? You mentioned something about being unhealthy in the past⦠Hm⦠That doesnāt necessarily mean that you were unhappy though.Ā [Giggling, she bit her lip, realizing that she was the one babbling too. Stealing a glance at her watch, she took another sip of her drink, a weak smile on her lips.]
Iām⦠Iām gonna have to get going soon. I canāt be late for my lesson.
[Casto looked down and slightly smiled then nodded as he looked back up at her.]
Actually, it was my wife. She died of cancer. We were together since we were 13. And losing her was probably the most difficult thing I have ever went through.
[He exhaled loudly and pressed his lips together.]
But life goes on. And you have to accept that things donāt always go the way you want them to. I think the most important thing when you lose somebody is to honor them by living a happy life afterwards. [Nodding, he smiled at her then shook her hand.]
I donāt want to make you late for your class. It was nice meeting you, Cassandra.
[Cancer. Wife. Death. It was nothing but an unconscious motion. A reflex to the words that reached her ears and registered in her brain. Her hand slowly moved from her side, finding its way over her heart. Death was inescapable, still, it was not a concept that was easily processed or understood. At least, not to Cassandra, even if she has never experienced the loss of someone. She couldnāt imagine what he had to go through, her empathic nature causing her own heart to twist from a light wave of sadness. The corner of her lips twisted downwards into a sad smile, forming a light pout on her lips. This was one of the few situations where she found herself at a loss for words, her eyes searching his face as her mind scoured for a suitable way to react to his words.]
Iām so sorry for your loss, Casto. I... uhm... apologize if I triggered any bad or unwanted thoughts when we were just... have a light-hearted discussion. But...
[Cassandra tilted her head slightly, her eyes gleaming with the hope that radiated through her presence.]
Everything you said is a testament of your love for your wife and your strength and will to be happy. Grasping your own happiness and not waiting for it to come to you, thatās the best anyone can do. I...
[Sheās never really been with a situation like this before and wasnāt even sure if her words were adequate and considerate enough. It seemed like he sensed some awkwardness from her or was it that he wanted to end the discussion where it was. Lost in her own thoughts, she realized that he extended his hand and she took it, shaking it firmly. Smiling softly, the words that left her mouth truly came from her heart.]
The pleasure was all mine. Iāll be here tomorrow. Same time, same place... Iād be happy to see you again.
[Without giving him the chance to respond, Cassandra scurried away and bit her lip. She was well aware that she invited him to meet again. Why did she do it? There was a pull she felt towards him, one that she wanted to explore. Maybe it was optimism? Or was it... his quirky nature? Which admittedly, she found attractive. The next day, as promised, she waited for him on the same bench they sat on the day before.]

[Cassandra murmured a softĀ āthank youā as he opened the door for her. He was truly a gentleman and that alone kept a smile on her face. How could one not appreciate good company? Well, that was yet to be determined. She let out a loud exhale as she felt the overwhelming heat.] I couldnāt agree more⦠I mean, not on the shirt part.. I donāt know if that would be considered public indecency.. Uhm, itās a great day to be on the beach though. That would be more appropriate⦠the whole shirt⦠forget it.Ā [As she grew more flustered, she bit her lip, finding herself thinking more and more about seeing Casto shirtless and couldnāt stop the blush that tinted her freckled cheeks. She giggled as he began to fan her. She shook her head in amusement, slowly removing her cardigan and tying it around her hips, remaining in a blue crop top.] Iām fine, I promise. You should fan yourself, though. The weather isnāt being kind to you⦠considering what youāre wearing. Uhm⦠can you please hold my drink for a second?Ā [She handed him her drink while she tied her hair up in a messy bun, smirking before taking it back from him.] Fun fact:Ā I donāt drink coffee. This is actually an iced chai latte. I donāt like the bitterness of coffee and too much caffeine makes me dizzy. Like⦠really dizzy.Ā
[Casto smiled at her messy bun and how she looked cute yet sexy.] Actually Iām shirtless way too often. Oh God, that sounded very wrong. I donāt⦠I mean to say I do a lot of surfing and swimming. That is why I get shirtles. I donāt sleep around or anything.
[He raised his brows and started speaking even faster than he already was.] And I get it. Caffeine isnāt exactly the healthiest thing. I canāt have much of it actually, because I get heart palpitations. I always order decaf. [He licked his lips as he stared at her body.] You seem athletic. Do you workout? [He took a deep breath.]
Cassandraās eyes widened a bit. She wasnāt sure if he realized what he was saying and simply looked away, scratching the tip of her nose and pulling a few loose locks of hair behind her ear. Too much information.Ā āUhm⦠I think we should just drop the whole shirt thing haha..āĀ She laughed a bit nervously. āIt would save us both the embarrassment.ā She noticed that he was nervous too. Cassandra clicked her cup with his, smiling, attempting to ease the mood a bit.Ā āHereās to a healthy life without caffeine!ā
Taking a sip of her iced drink, she nodded nonchalantly and looked ahead as they walked on the sidewalk. ā Iām no surfer or swimmer like you. Oh! And btw, it actually does show that you swim.ā Her eyebrows knit together, giving him a once-over. āThe indicators are⦠Hmm⦠your sculpted biceps, broad shoulders and chest.ā
After another sip of her drink, she continued. āAh, so yes, your question. I do workout regularly. Morning jogs, daily meditation and yoga, occasionally play tennis. I do some ballroom dancing whenever I can, well, that is if you count that as a workout. Uhm, yeah. Thatās about it, I guess.ā
[Casto smiled widely in excitement.]
That is amazing! I always encourage people to be physically active, because I was⦠sick⦠before. And exercise sort of saved my life you can say.
[He swallowed then held the back of his neck and looked up at the sky.]
The sun is getting stronger. Do you want to go to the park? We can have a small picnic.
[He opened his fanny pack and got out two wraps.]
I got an extra meatball sub. Also donāt mind the fanny pack. Itās my grandfatherās and he gave it to me to borrow temporarily.
[He sighed then shook his head.]
No, I lied. Iām sorry. Itās my fanny pack. Iām an old man. [He shrugged.]
So, what do you say? Want to get fat then exercise with me to burn it?
[His words piqued her curiosity. She wasnāt sure if she should ask him about him being sick or not. Looking at him, he seemed healthy and quite vibrant as well. Shaking her head to cast her thoughts aside, she laughed as she lifted her hand and placed it over her heart, mimicking his gesture from before.] Haha, thereās absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a fanny pack. Thank you but Iām not going to be eating until... [She checked her watch.] A few hours from now. Plus, I donāt have much time to spare but I donāt mind spending a bit more time with you until itās time for me to go.Ā [Taking a turn, Cassandra made sure that they walked in the direction of the nearest park that was only a block away. They would reach there fairly fast and she knew she wouldnāt be late for her other engagements.] I have a few private lessons scheduled for today. So I guess... Maybe... Rain check on your offer?Ā [She tilted her head, looking at him with curious eyes.]
You say that youāre an old man. Letās just agree to disagree on that because you donāt look old to me... But... do you mind me asking... how old are you?Ā
