John reaching for Sherlock in his sleep, throwing a leg over Sherlock’s, grinding his teeth, wrapping his arms around Sherlock’s narrow waist, pulling him back, tight against his chest, Sherlock waking up gasping for air, whispering i’m here, i’m here, i’m safe, we’re in bed, John, i’m not falling, I’m here, and John growling under his breath, right here with me, never letting go again, try to leave again, over my dead body.

In the morning they wake up and yawn through stretches and turn toward each other, warmth rolling up from under the duvet, and they say g’morning, love - sleep well? and mmm, come here, you? and then they both say, yeah, thanks, slept well, always do, next to you.

i never realised how soft and safe john looks while hugging sherlock

he closes his eyes, which is a reflex more suited to kissing than hugging

See? That smile? Sherlock stops in the middle of his showing off and goes see John. According to Lestrade’s surprised face at first, this is something that’s never happened before. Sherlock misses the opportunity to find a murderer to protect the man he just met, pretends he’s in shock and goes talk with that man. This doesn’t look like a logical reaction. It looks like a human reaction. Caused by emotions… Shock? Really??

The explanation is so blindigly obvious even Lestrade worked it out on day 1. That’s why he smiles.
