Figures in an Mbari house, Urata Igbo culture, photo taken before 1904. Near Owere. Mbari houses are votive shrines erected for town deities and left to ruin. Mbari is also the name of the festival held during the opening of the houses. The primary deity Mbari’s are opened for is Ala the earth force. A dibia (medium) calls for the building of an Mbari and the community pays for its construction.
