It was voice he hadnât heard in years. He hadnât really expected to hear it again, though perhaps it was for the best. He needed help and guidance. After years of being the master and teaching, he was lost and alone. It was too much of a burden to take on by himself.
Luke turned to face the source of the voice to see the spirit of his father before him. Anakin appeared to him younger than when they had shared a sacred few minutes together as truly father and son on the second Death Star all those years ago, but had no doubt in his mind about the spiritâs identity.
âFather.â He replied. âItâs been some time.â
He gazed on the face of his son. The strength of his longing that he felt surprised Anakin enough that he knew if he were still living he wouldâve swayed in place. His son lived to be older then he himself had ever managed. And while he was alone the man looked to be in good health despite the darkness creeping across the galaxy.Â
âToo much time. Itâs... Different how time passes in the force. Like flashes of events but sometimes nothing in between.â
He paused for a moment as anger and agony warred within him. His screwups seemed to follow their family down the line even now.
âI tried you know, speaking to him I mean. I tried for so long but... Well, it seems even with my strength Snoke was already connected too deeply. I keep trying still but even though it has been only a short while...âÂ

âBad luck to be singing about pirates with us mired in this unnatural fog.â
âItâs bad luck to have a woman on board.â
âI think itâd be rather exciting to meet a pirate.â
âI intend to see to it that any man who wails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deservesâa short drop and a sudden stop.â
âYouâre a pirate.â
âA fine gentleman, donât you think? He fancies you, you know.â
âThe blade is folded steel. Thatâs gold filigree laid into the handle.â
âI had a dream about you last night.â
âApparently thereâs some sort of high toned and fancy to do up at the fort, eh?â
âYouâve seen a ship with black sails thatâs crewed by the damned and captured by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out?â
âI confess, it is my invention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder, and otherwise pilfer my weasely black heart out.â
âPride of the kingâs navy, you are.â
âDo you really intend to kill my rescuer?â
âYou are without a doubt the worst pirate Iâve ever heard of.â
âPirate or not, this man saved my life.â
âOne good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness.â
âI saved your life, you save mine, weâre square.â
âYou seem somewhat familiar. Have I threatened you before?â
âI make a point of avoiding familiarity with pirates.â
âDo you think this wise boyâcrossing blades with a pirate?â
âI practice three hours a day so that when I meet a pirate, I can kill it.â
âHe is a fine man, heâs what any woman should dream of marrying.â
âNo survivors? Then where do the stories come from, I wonder.â
âParley. I invoke the right of parley.â
âMy sympathies, friend, youâve no manner of luck at all.â
âThe deepest circle of Hell is reserved for betrayers and mutineers.â
âYou know nothing of Hell.â
âIâm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Meanâs no.â
âYou are not a military man, you are not a sailor.â
âYou want to turn pirate yourself, is that it?â
âIf youâre intending to brave all, hasten to her and so win fair ladyâs heart, youâll have to do it alone.â
âThis is either madness or brilliance.â
âThat is without doubt the worst pirate I have ever seen.â
âIâm not a simpleton. You knew my father.â
âMy father was not a pirate.â
âThatâs not much incentive for me to fight fair then, is it?â
âThe only rules that really matter are theseâwhat a man can do and what a man canât do.â
âHeâs not a man to suffer fools, nor strike a bargain with one.â
âTake what you can, give nothing back.â
âAny mortal that removes but a single piece from that stone chest shall be punished for eternity.â

âNot all treasure is silver and gold, mate.â
âOur salvation is nigh! Our torment is near at end.â
âHave I ever given you reason not to trust me?â
âWho among us has paid the blood sacrificed to the heathen gods?â
âBegun by blood, by blood undone.â
âWhat sort of a man trades a manâs life for a ship?â
âPeople are easy to search when theyâre dead.â
âStop blowing holes in me ship.â
âIf any of you as much as thinks the word parley, Iâll have your guts for garters.â
âHis blood runs in my veins.â
âThatâs the second time Iâve had to watch that man sail away with my ship.â
âWelcome to the Caribbean, love.â
âYouâll be positively the most fearsome pirate in the Spanish main.â
âWhat a ship is, is freedom.â
âIâm not entirely sure that Iâve had enough rum to allow that kind of talk.â
âWhy is the rum gone?â
âIt is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels.â
âThereâll be no living with her after this.â

âSo this is where your heart truly lies, then?â
âI want you to know that I was rooting for you, mate.â
âPerhaps on the rare occasion pursuing the right course demands an act of piracy, piracy itself can be the right course?â
âThis is a beautiful sword. I would expect the man who made it to show the same care and devotion in every aspect of his life.â
âI think we can afford to give him one dayâs head start.â
âSo this is the path youâve chosen, is it?â
âNow, bring me the horizon.â

âHopefully it ends with us.â Luke offered with some amount of humor. Heâs used to the artificial hand by now. Wishing to have his own back doesnât even occur to him any more. Fighting against reality wasnât surrendering to the Force. The reality was his own hand was long goneâ but the Force was with him. A missing hand was just one in a number of scars and damages that had been placed on his body in pursuit of his vocation as a Jedi.  No more; no less.Â
Luke wsnât sure how to answer his fatherâs obvious concern; he wonât answer for Leia or comfort him falsely on her behalf. But maybe there was something he could offer to the ghost sitting beside him.Â
âShe needs time. I know she thinks about you,â Admittedly, it wasnât often with kindness or affection.  âSheâs working on reconciling it allâ Sheâs just⊠lost so much more than others. Itâs going to take her a while. Maybe sheâll never forgive you; but take comfort in knowing that she tries. Sheâs not a hateful personâ sheâs kind and generous and self-sacrificing. Itâs a struggle; it puts her at odds with herself.â
No, Leia might never forgive himâ Luke certainly didnât expect her toâ but she would find balance even in her feelings about Darth Vader. That much he had no doubts aboutâ and while that might not be what Anakinâs ghost would want to hear, to Luke that was far more important than bestowing any false forgiveness. Â
Leia wouldnât let it tear her apartâ if for no other reason than she wouldnât want to let Darth Vader have the satisfaction.
Anakin chuckled and agreed, nodding his head, ââhopefully, it does, a dreadful habit you know?â He held up his own arm that looked as it had before heâd lost it. âYou know I still find this strange? Having it again? Well, having any of my limbs really.âÂ
He trailed off into silence for a moment and considered his daughter. Brave, strong, and kind. He once knew someone else like that. Whoâd gone on to do so many great things and would have done more if he hadnât gotten in her way or his own. Heâd done such awful things on orders and some even without.Â
Alderaan and so many other places were gone. So many peoples lives and blood had stained his hands until the very end. Somehow saving his son was just enough to earn the forces forgiveness. How Anakin would never be certain but he was beyond grateful. It meant he could see his children.Â
âShe has all the time in the Galaxy, I wouldnât force my presence on her. Not ever again. Even if that never means forgiveness or anything from her.â He turned towards the window and considered the darkening sky outside once more. âI visit her sometimes you know? Never enough to be seen but just enough to feel at peace that she's okay, happy. She looks so much like Padme sometimes...â Even now that name tore through his soul like the molten lava of Mustafar.
