Gloucester & the breweries

Cities like Gloucester saw a flurry of new pubs as the expansion of the railways in the 19th century helped brewers to distribute their wares more widely. These three are:

The Old Robin Hood - a Stroud brewery pub. Closed 1977 and now residential.

The Vauxhall Inn - extravagant showpiece for Mitchell & Butlers as it expanded into the South West. Closed 2005, now an independent supermarket.

The New Pilot Inn - a Godsell brewery pub. The plasterwork above the door is of the brewery livery (hand clasping malt shovel) and motto (Work & Honour). Closed between 2012 & 15? Now student accommodation.

Supermarket sweep

Many pubs become supermarkets - here are just four examples from Tesco in Bristol.

The Fellowship Inn (1929-2012). Rare inter-war pub, built for the fast-expanding Filton estate.

The Bell Hotel (closed by 2011, converted 2012).

Royal Oak in Portishead, just outside Bristol (closed 2012).

The Foresters of Westbury (1900s-2012)

Walsall has lost 44% of its pubs since 2001, here are some of the casualties:

Three Crowns - closed 2006 (empty)

Commercial Inn (empty)

Market Tavern - closed 2009 - used to include a brewery (empty)

Hatherton Arms- closed 2005 (residential)

Duke of Wellington - closed 2007 (residential)

Newham in London has lost 52% of its pubs between 2001 and 2017. These four are

The Manby Arms (closed 2013). Empty.

The Angel (closed 2010). Empty.

The Dew Drop Inn (closed 2011). Residential.

The Windmill Inn (closed 2010). Supported accommodation.

Frome has the most listed buildings in any Somerset town, including some of its pubs. The Pack Horse (top) dates back to the 18th century and now lies empty.
