Michael Crichton's novel, The Lost World, “is an homage to and a sequel to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 novel of the same name, sharing a similar theme of a remote location populated by dinosaurs. Crichton directly references Doyle's work through character names like "Roxton" and by using the title of the classic story.” It is the sequel to JURASSIC PARK
- Have you seen that? What is it about? - and discuss the idea of finding DNA in amber and how they made the velociraptor suit and filmed it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAzQr3Ml0UI&t=119s watch and explain
Fun Fact - The Velociraptors in the Jurassic Franchise are well known nowadays to be very inaccurate to their Real Turkey-Sized Counterparts. However, what you may not know is that the behavior & size of the Jurassic Velociraptors is eerily similar to the Utahraptors from our Jurassic period.
Prehistoric Monster Egg (part 3)
Process:
Finalising the egg. Grab some red and white paint, a cup of water, and a SOFT brush (optional extra, vanish)
Lightly dip the brush in both paints (not mixing) then dab it in the water for 2 seconds
Hold up the egg and using your thumb, pull back and flick the wet paint from the brush towards the egg to make a natural pattern
(optional)
Get another brush/wash your current brush, put a little vanish into a cup and start coating the hand (not the egg!) to give it a shiny/glossy finish
Outcome:
Dinosaur Research
Research: Dinosaurs and creatures from games, comics, TV and Film. i.e. Jurassic Park scenes and films, processes and ideas like Stan Winston’s effects - how did they redesign the raptor for the first film and why?
Is your egg a representation of a real dinosaur or have you widened the context to creatures? why?

What is UV mapping?
UV mapping is a crucial technique of 3D modeling that involves projecting a 3D model's surface onto a 2D image, allowing for textures to be applied accurately to a model. This ensures that stuff like colors and patterns properly align with the geometry of said 3D models.
The Step Process of UV Mapping usually involve...
Mesh Preparation - Finalizing 3D model's geometry before using UV Editor
Seam Marking - Select specific edges on the model to serve as cutting lines to unwrap the mesh
Unwrapping - Flattening 3D model into 2D Layout
Texture Appliance - Applying 2D texture to the unwrapped UV layout, ensuring correct alignment with the 3D model
The reason why UV mapping is used for Video Games and Animated Movies is to improve visual fidelity and give them a sense of realism, or help give characters and creatures more detail.
Example: Red Dead Redemption
Eggs and Dinosaurs
How do these contrast to your own designs? i.e. scale? quality of the egg?
The Dino-Egg on the left looks to be on a much smaller scale, which has allowed the create to add much more defined details to both the Raptor AND the Egg.
In contrast, the Dino-Egg on the right is a lot larger and while the Raptor inside is still very elaborate, the egg’s leaves more to be desired despite the various egg spots.
Compared to the other two, my Monster Egg is a lot more… undemanding? Excusing the different types of creature, the detail and cracks on my egg a lot simpler. Which is a stark contrast to the much higher-quality Examples above.
(Not the finalized version of this product)
Prehistoric Monster Egg (part 2)
Process:
Continuing from last week, keep adding supper sculpy to the hand and insert it into the hole of your egg
Using sculpting tools, lightly add details and highlights to the claw (i.e. nails)
Cook in the oven for 10-15~ minutes (maybe more if necessary)
Once cooked, grab some paint and SOFT brushes
First paint the egg, being very careful not to get paint within the blackened cracks
Then paint your creatures hand (or whatever you made). Start by painting the whole limb one color, let it dry and then add extra painted details (nails again)
Finish off with some light dry brushing
Outcome: work in progress…
Submarine final design sheet
I decided to base my submarine on the James Bond Lotus, making an 80's style euro sports car for the body and then adding submarine parts onto it. The Spy Who Loved me starring Roger Moore and the car did what?
1980s - the car was very boxy and wedged shape - not my most favourite car, but it is the submarine car.
Compared to the design sheet, the final 3D model is very similar to the concept with the only changes being the added wheels and where the "propellers" are placed. The rest is of the unadded details was due to time constraints.
Maya: British Submarine Car Thing (P3)
Process: Finally, I added in different colours to different areas/faces of the car. This really helped to highlight the detailing and 3D elements of the car. I aded wheels, windows and wings. We then 3D printed the outcome.
Outcome: Carmarine
How does the 3D printer change your outcome from the original? Do you like it?
Maya: British Submarine Car Thing (P2)
Process: Here I continued to add further details, such as doors. Again, this required me to use the multi-cut tool to create new edges and faces. I could then select the door face, and extrude it to make it stand out.
I later added a material, and paint.
Spider Research
(I’m not getting any real spiders because I’m Arachnophobic)
Stop-Mo Spider (Part 3)
Process 1:
Finish off spider by adding sculpting clay for the eyes & mouth (bonus - make a small ball and add it to the center pin connecting the spider’s body)
Take a clean picture of the finished product
With a group, start preparing for your Stop-Motion animation with a storyboard and backdrop
With a camera, take multiple photos of your spiders while adjusting & moving them to the story
Once finished, import all photos into a folder on Google Drive
Process 2:
Download the folder from Google Drive
Open Photoshop and create a new file
Go to File > Scripts > Load files into Stack. Select the download photos for your Stop-Motion animation and press "OK". This will upload all photos onto separate layers
Once opened, select all the photo layers. Then go to Image > Image Size, and set the size of all photos to a more manageable file size for Tumblr (14cm-8cm should work. If not, go smaller like I had to)
Go to Window > Timeline to begin animating
Select "Create Frame Animation", then select the 3 lines on the top-right corner of the Timeline Box and select the option to quickly give all layers a frame
Make sure all frames/layers are in the correct order for your animation
Select all frames and set the times to 0.1 seconds per frame
Once everything is correct, Save to OneDrive/Save a Copy as a GIF to present your outcome
Outcome: Spider Stop-Motion GIF
(This is as big as I can get, deal with it)
Prehistoric Monster Egg (part 1)
Process:
Sketch out design of egg
Get an egg (fake obviously) and start carving scratches and indentations to make a cracking effect
Get some WET paint dab it into the cracks. (You can paint over the excess later)
Get some wire, masking tape and scissors. Twist and turn the wires to form a hand/claw shape
Cut the wire fingers down to scale with scissors, then use masking tape to cover and layer the skeletal frame of the hand
Coat over the tape in glue before you start adding super sculpy...
Outcome: Work in progress...
Maya: British Submarine Car Thing
Process: To create my unique submarine/car I started off with a cube, which I reshaped into a rectangle. I then used the multi cut tool, to create multiple faces, that could be easily edited and moved to make the shape I wanted. I quickly realised that I needed to create multiple new faces on the car, to actually edit it, and add new details. Below you can see the cuts in the car, and details that started to appear.
Outcome:
I added a spoiler, lights, and a bumper. To do this I had to use a variety of tools, such as extrude scale, multi-cut tool, boolean and bevel.
Video Game Graphics
There are a variety of different Graphics-Styles within the Video Game industry. Among them, there are 4 common ones that stand out
Realism - Photorealistic Graphics that mimic real life textures through their characters and environments. This tends to be the standard for most Modern AAA Games.
Cel Shaded - Non-Photorealistic Graphics that give the illusion of a 2D animation despite being 3D. They tend to be much more colorful, yet arguably more stylized than games that go for Realism.
Pixel Art - Graphics using an assortment of many colorful squares, ranging from various bit-sizes for if devs wish for simplicity or more detail in their games.
Low Poly - For those on a tighter budget, using simpler geometric shapes to create a game’s world. With the correct lighting and rendering, it can still look just as good.
Below are some examples of games I have played
Metal Gear Rising REVENGEANCE - A Hack’N’Slash spinoff game from the Metal Gear Solid series, trading in the stealth gameplay for High-Octane Cyborg Sword Combat [Realism]
Devil May Cry (4 & 5) - A Hack’N’Slash Action-Adventure Series of Games based around slaying through hordes of Demons with style [Realism]
Asura’s Wrath - A Hack’n’… Punch Action Game which plays like an interact-able Anime of a Fallen Demigod of Wrath slaying other False Gods after betraying him. [Realism/Cel-Shaded?]
Transformers: War for Cybertron - A 3rd Person Shooter-based game centered around the War between the Autobots and Decepticons fighting for Cybertron’s fate [Realism]
Transformers: Devestation - A Hack’N’Slash action game with Generation 1 Transformers, with Optimus & the Autobots saving the Earth from the Decepticons corruption [Cel-Shaded]
(ok, I haven’t played this one, but I like it)
Burnout Paradise (remastered) - A High-Octane Arcade Racer which is designed for immense speeds and intense destruction. [Realism]
The Crew (2014) - An Open-World Street Racing Game that centers around the story of a man wanting revenge for his murdered brother (aka. If Need for Speed’s writing was actually good) [Realism]
As you can see, a majority of these examples more or less fall into the Realism category of Graphics Design, with only 2(ish) being Cel Shaded.
With that said, I am more drawn in by their high-octane gameplay (or stories) than how realistic they look - For example: I prefer how DMC4 looks to DMC5, even if 5 might be a better game in general.
Basically, I don’t need it to look overly realistic like Dragon Age or GTA6. I just need it to look good enough but have interesting/intense gameplay
[Bonus] Disney Infinity (3.0) - A Toys to Life Sandbox Game where you can create your own worlds and adventures and play various different Disney Characters [Uhh… I actually don’t know for this one]
Submarine Designs to explore:
I want you to begin drawing your submarine designs. To start, I would like you to create a submarine mood board (a selection of different submarine images images) and discuss them on your blogs.
Here are some things to start with: Yellow Submarine - The Beatles Star Wars - Tribubble bongo Subnautica - tons of stuff The Abyss - Submarine The life aquatic Octonaughts
What is Maya?
Maya is a 3D Computer Graphics Application most commonly used in the industry for Movies, TV Shows, Video Games, Visual Effects etc.
Initially released all the way back February of 1998, the software was made Alias Systems Corporation with collaborative help of Walt Disney Animation Studios for their 2000’s movie "Dinosaur". Thanks to Disney, the software had a Customisable User Interface to allow for more personalised workflow, which is one of the main reasons of why it became one of the best 3D Applications in the industry. As a newbie to 3D, I am a bit… mixed as of how I feel in using Maya. Perhaps this is due to me not being used to the software yet, but It’s hard for me to memorise how everything works (which doesn’t for progress), and so far all I’ve made is static objects. Not any moving animations.
Examples of Maya usage: Uncharted 4 - An Explorer Adventure Game for PlayStation consoles.
The Witcher 3 - A
Shrek - One of the earlier examples of using Maya.
