Shiro And That Stupid Arm
I’m over a year late and a lot of people have probably moved on but apparently I’m still salty enough about things to rant about them. This has probably been ranted about before, so feel free to skip. I just needed to get it off my chest.
There’s a multitude of things that were completely messed up or just…destroyed by the showrunners of Voltron by the end of the show. Others have listed them all much more succinctly and more thoughtfully than I ever could. I just want to focus on this one…bulky…ugly…thing:
I hate it. I hate it so much. I’ve never hated an inanimate object this much in my 30 years of life.
It’s not just the stupid design of this useless scrap of metal that pisses me off. It’s also how Shiro freaking got it in the first place. What a wasted opportunity. This could have been such a great moment for the entire team. Everyone could have come together to do something special for Shiro, to show him how much they cared about him and to thank him for all the sacrifices he made throughout this journey.
Pidge and Hunk could have made him a cool new arm. Matt would have helped too, as thanks for saving his life and to further cement his friendship with Shiro. It would have been a great opportunity for Shiro and Hunk to bond more since the show apparently refused to let them do it previously. And Pidge and Shiro’s dynamic was always a favourite of mine. You know she would have made sure that arm was fucking badass.
Allura and Coran would have added an Altean spin to it, perhaps powering it with magic and Altean tech.
Keith would have been able to provide information on tailoring it specifically to Shiro’s tastes. Lance would have probably had some bright ideas for making the arm not just deadly but also useful, with special additions to help people or potentially save lives. And you bet your ass both of them would have demanded some sort of tracker be in it in case Shiro disappeared on them again.
But no. Instead we got some random ugly ass arm that was just laying around. If I remember right there were a bunch of random arms there. Plus this is HUMAN technology which is light years behind Altean and Galran tech. Why in the world would they downgrade!? This arm is nowhere near as useful as the Galran arm. Shiro was a phenomenal hand-to-hand combatant before. Just…UGH.
I’m still so pissed off with how Shiro was treated in this clusterfuck of a show. And I know he wasn’t the only one treated so poorly, but he’s my favourite character so it just feels stronger for me personally with him. This arm represents how little the showrunners cared about him. They took an integral part of Shiro’s backstory, ripped it away in a traumatizing way and then refused to acknowledge its importance by replacing it with just any old arm because they were so blind to its significance and message.
His trauma meant nothing. His connection with his team meant nothing. His bond with his lion meant nothing. Shiro meant nothing.
Well, Shiro means something to me no matter how hard they tried to destroy him.
