New year, new rules. Over the past few years, I’ve been less and less active on this blog. As of 1/1/2021, I’m no longer taking submissions or allowing questions. I just don’t have the bandwidth. This is my 1986 Lotus Challenger in Crystal Black, I call it Ozai or 'The Firelord' because of the color scheme. Located in Chicago IL, size 58CM.
Q: What of module is this bike?
A: Not a Lotus. Brand appears to be Focus. I’m not familiar with it.
After a LOT of help from your blog about pricing and what to look for, I picked up this recently-tuned Odyssey secondhand for a decent (Covid price of) $220! Has a lot of its original components :] Replaced the back tube and now it’s ready to ride around San Antonio, TX!

I had been hunting for a high-quality small frame 19-20 inches Lotus bike to rebuild for my daughter, after doing the same with a 23 inch Excelle and Classique for my older sons.  I ran across a 19 in. Excelle (1987) on eBay that looked great, but the seller didn’t know enough about bikes to answer my questions.  But for $79.99 I just paid and started planning how to get it “local pick-up only” in Indianapolis.  The seller didn’t want to wait two months till I got to Indy myself, so I arranged for a friend to pick it up.  Then the seller tells me he’s got a second Lotus bike but doesn’t know anything about it and it’s behind stuff in his garage so he can’t send me pix.  So I ask my friend to see if he can get some pix of it when he picks up the Excelle, which he does.  I see the pix and it is unmistakably a 1984 Unique, 20-incher.  I can’t pass it up and eventually make a deal with the guy to also buy it for $79.99.  Not wanting to send my friend back to the opposite end of the county, I picked it up myself a month and a half later after picking up the first one from my friend.  Back home in Michigan I start work on them and discover the Excelle has the original tires and seems to have almost never been ridden.  Lots of dust and grime but no rust at all.  The Unique is also in great shape except the “UNIQUE” decals and a few other odd ones are completely missing.  On top of that, the original wheels are missing and in their place I get a set of old 5-speed wheels with Campy hubs and Mavic rims.  I trade some old parts to my LBS in return for rebuilding the rear wheel with a proper size axle.  Long-story short, my daughter picks the Unique for the violet-blue color, but it also fits her perfectly.  And I rebuild the Excelle for her even more petite friend. Â

That’s a cool story. I suggest craigslist, facebook marketplace, or ebay. It’s worth what someone will pay for it. Ebay requires shipping the item but you may fetch a higher price than CL or FM. Please forward a couple of pics and good luck with the sale! $200-$450?

The 1984 Eclair I posted here last year has been through some transformations. Currently, it sports components that were on my wife’s 2010 Cannondale Synapse: a 3x9 Tiagra drivetrain and the 700c Formula/Maddux wheelset with Compass/Rene Herse 35mm Bon Jon Pass tires. Along with the brifters she enjoys a set of Tektro interrupter levers. Shimano platform/SPD pedals and her Terry Liberator saddle round it out. The rims, spokes, saddle and bar tape are all black, nicely complementing the original maroon/black paint. She enjoys the ride quality far more than the Cannondale (anyone want to buy a frame?)
1984 Lotus Legend
Two years ago I found a mystery Lotus frame on eBay that intrigued me … and the seller turned out to be two blocks away so I ran over and bought it.  The frame had been customized with modified braze-ons and had obviously been stripped and repainted - badly.  But I eventually narrowed it down to being originally a 1984 Lotus Legend.  Last winter I sent it off to Yellow Jersey to repair a bend and repaint it.  They knocked it out of the park with a splendid paint and decal job - quite a project they detailed on their website: http://www.yellowjersey.org/nialign.html  Anyway, with only the original frame, fork, and crank to start, I built it up with Lotus parts I had, misc. online finds, and accessories from Velo Orange.  She rides great too.  This is about the eighth or ninth Lotus I’ve owned but the first Legend. Â
I got this Lotus from my dad who bought it in Odense, Denmark just before I was born in 1990. It went through a minor renovation before it was gifted to me years ago. Frame and wheels + gears are original, it looks like most other parts (pedals, saddle, handlebar tape, lights + reflectors) have been replaced.
It has not been taken real care of, so I plan to restore it to it's original state. To start, I've searched the internet to find what model it is exactly, but haven't had luck in this regard. The model name is unknown (decal has fallen off, if it was ever there).
The frame is made from Mesu "Titan" Micro-alloyed steel pipes, type ZSTE420. Stamped letters and numbers below frame includes WFL 7740 789 C 69, but it doesn't match any from vintagelotusbicycles' model chart...
Maybe someone can help me in determining the model?
