Yet another AO3 bot situation - please spread the word!
Hi, it's me again, the person who wrote that viral post about fanfiction plagiarism! Today I'm here to warn you about abuse perpetrated by bots who have stolen AO3 usernames.
There's currently an epidemic of bots going around leaving (apparently random) horrible, hateful comments on people's fics. This isn't the first time bots have invaded AO3, but the big problem with this wave is that they're using real AO3 usernames to do it.
I learned about this when another writer contacted me after receiving the following comment on their story:
Now, while that is my username, I DEFINITELY did not leave this comment (and anyone who would leave something like that on a fic should be slapped! What an awful thing to post). This fic is in a completely unrelated fandom that I have never participated in, nor has that author participated in any of my fandoms, so the probability of it being some intentional fandom drama thing to make me look bad is also low.
The writer whose fic the comment was left on enlisted the aid of some friends and tracked down other guest comments with unrelated usernames attached, which is pretty strong evidence that they are being left by bots at random.
The TL;DR: If you receive a cruel comment from a (Guest) with an actual AO3 username attached, it's most likely from a bot. Please do not lash out at or dogpile the AO3 user who owns that name, and who in all likelihood has no idea that their name has been hijacked for evil.
If finding this kind of comment on a fic, even left by a bot, is likely to upset you, I would recommend changing your comment settings so that only users who are logged in can leave comments. To do this, edit your story settings, and under "Privacy," select the radio button that says "Only registered users can comment," as shown below.
Please spread the word to other AO3 users! And if you see mean guest comments on other fics, maybe let the author know that it's probably from a bot and not a real person who thinks their writing is bad.

Fic writers, do you re-read your own fics?
yes, multiple times, just for fun
yes, just once, a while later, now that I've forgotten the agonies of writing
yes, just once, right away to find typos/mistakes
no, never
other (put it in the tags!)
I re-read my fic every time I open the drafts because I fucking forgot what I was doing.
> bring brother to mountain to "find" an immortal master > actually finds two (lost) immortal masters > ???
I'm sorry. I broke my promise.

You know I figured that my next writing obligation was going to go straight to the next chapter of 30 Million Little Friends, but… I’m seeing an uptick in defensive pissed-off JC meta and weary wank metacommentary, which leads me to think that JC antis have been clownin again
so perhaps instead, in honor of the JC antis, I should write that de-aged Jiang Cheng fic? thoughts?
guess I’m doin this?

It was nice to get out of Golden Scale Tower on a night hunt, and it was nice to spend time with his jiujiu. In fact, those were two of Jin Ling’s favorite things!
But they were kind of… not the greatest in combination?!
The best thing would have been a night hunt with his friends – the annoying Lans, the Ouyang heir. Second best would be them and da-jiu – it was always fun hunting with Wei Wuxian, he always knew the weirdest things, but he would always tease Jin Ling relentlessly in front of Lan Jingyi, ugh. Third best would have been a night hunt with some of the Jin juniors – they at least wouldn’t have been able to tell him what to do.
But going on a night hunt with Jiujiu always ended up like this: with him lingering fifty feet back, sword idle and bored out of his mind, while Jiujiu beat the shit out of a a corrupted gingko tree with Zidian.
Demonic energy roared around the clearing and lashed at the edges of the trees, but Jiujiu had been pretty shrewd in his guess as to how far its reach went, and Jin Ling was well outside it. He was still tempted to ignore everything and plunge into the fray with Suihua, but he had to admit – grumpily – that there didn’t seem to be much point. Jiujiu had this thing on the ropes.

A letter was delivered to Cloud Recesses, urgent enough that a disciple went looking for Wei Wuxian in person, instead of just adding the message to the next day’s bundle of mail headed towards Lan Wangji’s desk.
“It’s from Jin Ling,” Wei Wuxian said, reading over the brief note with an interested tilt to his eyebrows. “Wants me to come to Golden Scale Tower at once. A situation he wants my advice on.”
Lan Wangji scowled – it was faint, but there if you knew what to look for. He didn’t like the thought of Wei Wuxian being anywhere near Golden Scale Tower, after several extremely traumatic visits there. “It’s fine,” Wei Wuxian assured him, folding up the message. “Jin Ling wouldn’t ask me to come if it wasn’t something important. He’s a Sect Leader now, he knows better than to be obnoxious and demanding just to stroke his own ego…”
The slightly disgruntled look on Lan Wangji’s face loudly said that he knew plenty of Sect Leaders who knew nothing of the sort, but he did not object further to Wei Wuxian’s leaving.
“I think I’ll go now,” Wei Wuxian decided, rising from the floor. “See what he’s gotten so excited about.”
“I’ll join you tomorrow,” Lan Wangji told him as they shared a farewell-my-love-until-we-meet-again-in-the-faroff-lands-of-next-mealtime kiss. “After making arrangements here.”
“I’ll wait for you at Golden Scale Tower, then,” Wei Wuxian said cheerfully. “Although for all I know, we’ll have to turn around almost as soon as you get there. Whatever weird puzzle Jin Ling has cooked up for me, I’ll bet I’ll have it sorted by nightfall!”

“What’s your name anyway?” Jiang Cheng asked. “I know you’re Jiang, but what’s your name?”
“Ah. Well.” He cleared his throat, then patted his chest. “This one is Wei Wuxian.”
“Wei…” Jiang Cheng’s little forehead creased in a frown, and for a moment Wei Wuxian’s heart leapt with the thought that he’d been recognized. But what Jiang Cheng said instead was: “Do you know Wei-shibo?”
