Can’t have anything good in this fandom
Lance has a very embarrassing secret.
See, everyone thinks that if Lance went back in time and told his preteen self that he is completely and irrevocably in love with one Keith Kogane, Preteen Lance would be horrified. The truth is that Lance has had a big, fat, humiliating crush on Keith since they accidentally bumped into each other during the new student orientation day at the Garrison when they were eleven years old.
Lance has been gone on Keith’s ass for nine goddamned years. Seriously.
The whole thing is just humiliating. Not even Hunk knows. The only person who knows is Keith himself, and he knows because he is unfortunately very charming and Lance is very bad and keeping secrets from pretty people. (Also, somehow Keith suspected the horrible secret even though Lance is very subtle, and one day decided he was going to make Lance admit it and kissed it out of him. Lance is a little annoyed he caved so easily, but he would honestly challenge anyone to be pressed against a door and kissed so hard it’s almost bruising by Keith ‘Walking Sex Machine’ Kogane and not spill every single one of your life secrets. Keith is a very convincing individual, who is well aware of his pretty privilege and his no qualms against using it.)
“I love you and all your embarassing secrets,” Keith promises. Lance scowls, burrowing further into Keith’s chest and hiking their fluffy space blanket above his head.
“Shuddup.”
Keith’s chest shakes as he chuckles, and Lance pretends the sound doesn’t make him smile. It’s useless, because Keith knows him better than anyone, but whatever. He feels a pressure on his head as Keith presses a kiss there through the blanket, then wraps both arms — big, strong arms, that Lance admittedly gets distracted by often — around him and rolls them over so they’re both laying on their sides. He then gently tugs down Lance’s blanket burrow, so his face is visible.
“Is it really so bad that you’ve loved me for so long?”
“It’s not that,” Lance huffs, eyes crossing as he tries to look Keith in the face (they’re very close). “It’s the fact that I did the whole rivalry thing because I was too embarrassed to talk to you. That’s the horrible part.”
Keith laughs again, shifting down the kiss him properly. Lance allows it, even though he’s pretending to be grumpy, because he likes Keith kisses. They’re the best kind.
“I’ve got nothing for you there. That is embarrassing,” Keith says between kisses. He never goes far, which Lance appreciates and also knows it’s because Lance has him koalaed a little. Lance hums and decides he is done talking, wiggling closer into Keith’s space (so close there is no space where they aren’t touching, no space where they aren’t pressed close close closely together). He presses one more kiss to Keith’s mouth before sighing and resting his head back on top of Keith’s heart.
“I love you more than anything,” he whispers, because he does. He presses yet another kiss to Keith’s chest, because he’s sappy and because he can.
“You are the best thing that has every happened to me,” Keith responds, just as quiet. He runs his hands through Lance’s hair, scratching gently every fourth or so pass.
Lance smiles. Maybe his secret really isn’t so embarrassing, after all.
I’m telling you sappy klance is literally gonna kill me.
God I love these silly boys sm.
I can not-
I can’t believe it’s the last episode :((
I’m so not ready for this
There was a Buddy Daddies Radio at AnimeJapan 2023, but the live video to watch it was region blocked. Ugh. Did anyone get to hear it? I’m curious what they may have talked about and if they dropped any more hints about the final episode.
A teaser of an audio drama that is going to be packaged with Vol. 2 of the DVD/BDs called “When one door closes, another door opens.”
English: Rei left his parents house and is now living in a hotel. Kazuki, who isn’t working near enough for it, gambles away all his money. Although the two were living their own separate lives, Kyutaro asks Kazuki to look for Rei. Kazuki finally finds Rei, but…
In the snippet they play above, you can hear Rei playing games (he failed the mission) and ordering room service. But he can’t use his card to buy the food, so the hotel staff asks if he has any other means of paying. Then we hear the staff employee shouting, “COME BACK!” (more directly, “WAIT!”) and the sound of Rei breathing heavily, indicating that he has run away from the hotel. It seems he runs into the street, since there is a car horn honking and a man yelling, “What the hell are you doing!?” to him. Rei’s scene ends with him being like, “This is bad. I can’t use my card and I don’t have any money on me.”
Then it transitions over to Kazuki’s part of the audio drama. We hear the sound of gambling. It seems Kazuki put all his money on red, and even Carol and Dorothy are like, “Wow! You’re going to bet all your money?” and “Wow, Kazuki, how daring!” He takes a big, long sip of his beer and he’s all like, “I’m gonna win big this time! And then I’m going to —” and he starts to say what he plans to do with the money he wins, but you hear the clack-clack of the ball and his scream of pain at realizing he lost it all, lmao. Carol: Come again, ka~ay? :D Then you hear Kazuki sneezing and then drinking again, he sadly states, “My life is a over.” Then Kyutaro finds him and tells him to come over to the Mistletoe Cafe.
So, I wonder if this is going to be the backstory that leads to the scene that we see in Episode 8 of Kazuki walking into the cafe and seeing Rei there? If it does play out like that, then that will be rather interesting, since it would parallel Episode 5 when Miri got lost. Kazuki and Rei searched all over, but then they found her at Kyu’s cafe. It would make for an interesting parallel.
This would also fit with Kazuki saying that it was because of Kyutaro that they met (I believe he says that, or something similar, someone correct me if I am misremembering though!). Since this sounds like the setup to when they both first got to know each other and then started living together. Nice!
Ryo’s Gun & Jane Austen
It’s hard to see, but in the OP Ryo’s gun (and it is Ryo’s gun, I made the mistake in a previous post of thinking it was Kazuki’s, whoops! But I have noted that correction in a reblog, so definitely check that out - I’ll link it below) has a quote on it from, what Google is telling me, is Jane Austen. The quote is:
I want nothing but death.
Those were her last words.
Seeing those last words on Ryo’s gun in the OP with the current situation and the Episode 11 preview and everything - it can certainly seem scary.
But, I’m going to focus a bit on Jane Austen as a writer, what her styles and themes are, and what that might mean for Buddy Daddies or how it might be reflected in Buddy Daddies. Since Kazuki’s VA did mention that we should think about what message the director is sending in this last act.
So, let’s take a look. I think the main two ways that Jane Austen’s style and themes can be seen in Buddy Daddies, is how her writing was considered realism and with a lot of emphasis being placed on “the everyday” that was accompanied by comedy:
Text: Jane Austen’s (1775–1817) distinctive literary style relies on a combination of parody, burlesque, irony, free indirect speech and a degree of realism. She uses parody and burlesque for comic effect and to critique the portrayal of women in 18th-century sentimental and Gothic novels. Austen extends her critique by highlighting social hypocrisy through irony; she often creates an ironic tone through free indirect speech in which the thoughts and words of the characters mix with the voice of the narrator. The degree to which critics believe Austen’s characters have psychological depth informs their views regarding her realism. While some scholars argue that Austen falls into a tradition of realism because of her finely executed portrayal of individual characters and her emphasis on “the everyday”, others contend that her characters lack a depth of feeling compared with earlier works, and that this, combined with Austen’s polemical tone, places her outside the realist tradition.
(From the Wikipedia Article on her style, which will be linked to below).
We see aspects of this with Buddy Daddies. In Episode 4 we have a critique being made about the ridiculous levels of paperwork and prep work that needs to go into sending a kid to daycare.
While we get depictions of everyday aspects like Kazuki cleaning or Rei and Miri playing games together.
Another aspect of Jane Austen’s writing style is about character’s growing to become “better” and more moral versions of themselves.
Text: Her plots are fundamentally about education; her heroines come to see themselves and their conduct more clearly, and become better, more moral people. While Austen steers clear of the formal moralizing common in early-19th-century literature, morality—characterized by manners, duty to society and religious seriousness—is a central theme of her works. Throughout her novels, serious reading is associated with intellectual and moral development.
We see that happening in Buddy Daddies as well, through scenes like Rei’s thoughts on how he just mindlessly killed in the past:
Or with the discussion and prevalence on change:
There are other elements and themes to her writing as well, like the focus on women, of course. But I don’t think we can really speak on that aspect too much until the series is said and done.
Of course, the quote is likely also there due to Ryo’s curiosity with death, final words, and the reason for why humans exist. But, I would like to think that this quote wasn’t picked solely for that reason either.
Also, I’m not super well versed in Jane Austen stuff (I know some of my moots are though! Though I don’t know how versed they might be with Buddy Daddies), but if anyone who is more versed with her as a person and her works wants to chime in or add to this (or correct me on anything I may have gotten wrong!) please feel free to do so in a reblog, comment or even in the tags. I always love to see what others write or contribute to the conversation! <3
It’s been a couple years since I talked about Austen in any academic context, but it’s worth noting that Austen’s works are fundamentally about love. Who we love, why we love, but also the expression of love - our capacity for such expression (or lack thereof) and our society’s willingness to tolerate such expression (or lack thereof).
I’m inclined to reach for Persuasion here over other titles. Persuasion is about love that, for the vast majority of the story, cannot be spoken - because of familial duty and societal expectations, but also miscommunication, unfortunate timing, and simple fear of pain and rejection. It is about two people yearning for each other for eight long years, believing they missed their opportunity to be together, until finally they realize their circumstances have changed and they can be together now, in a way they perhaps weren’t actually ready to be before. I’m simplifying a bit because I’m too tired to get really academic about this years out from college, but yeah, there’s a surprising amount of resonance here.
