I decided to do the photo op on Thursday, since the rest of my weekend was booked pretty solidly, and I think maybe I shouldn’t have. Even trying to be last so I could talk to them about it, Being in the photo op room instead of the main stage area meant we were very rushed. They showed the usual excitement about it, though, in spite of how thin this one was. Here’s hoping we can make a huge one for them for DC in November!

[I’m thinking of giving us all a ton more time to do this for DC, like maybe opening things up as early as June or July? What do you guys think?]

Jason Manns Vegas FanFic FanArt Project Final Update!

As opposed to when I presented him with a book at ChiCon last year, I actually got to take a moment and tell Jason what it was all about this time. I visited him at his table in the vendor room and got to explain all about what we do and why we do it (and a bit about why it was so thin this time). He seemed very appreciative, though maybe still a little wary at the idea of fan fiction? We’ll bring him around, I think!

[I’m definitely going to do this again for DC this November. I’m thinking of giving us all a lot more time, though, and opening things up as early as June or July. Let me know what you think!]

Louden Swain Amazing Angela FanFic/FanArt Project

In the past, this has been open to all Louden Swain songs, but since I’ll be attended two cons this year, instead of one, we’re gonna do this one a little differently. (When I go to DC in November, we’ll go back to the regular format.)

When I saw Rob at ChiCon in July, I asked him to pick out a song for us all to write for. Instead of just one,he gave me TWO! The songs he chose are Amazing and Angela!

You can write for one or write for both! I’m hoping we’ll see how differently we all interpret these songs by applying the themes to different characters and pairings!

As usual, I’m looking for BOTH writers and artists for this! We’ve always managed to have some kind of art or edits or aesthetics for every story, and I’d like to continue that streak.

Floating ideas for Louden Swain and Jason Manns

Y’all know that I have led the Louden Swain FanFic/Art Project for three years, now. I love it, so no worries about that! I have some ideas for this year that I want to get some feedback on before I commit to anything, just because I can’t do all of them, I don’t think.

First - There will be TWO Louden Swain projects this year, because I am going to two cons, Vegas and DC.

Vegas - As I announced before, the project for Vegas will focus on only two songs, Amazing and Angela. You can write for one or the other or both, it’s up to you. The goal is to find as many different interpretations as we can, so we’re gonna think out of the box.

DC - The project for DC will be the usual. No writing for a song you’ve already written for, all Louden Swain and Station Breaks songs will be up for grabs.

What I would like feedback on right now, preferably before February 1st, is ADDITIONAL projects. Because I love Louden Swain and Jason Manns so much.

(Because I’m insane.)

Idea 1 - Same deal as the usual Louden Swain project, but for Jason.

Jason is going to be at all of the Creation cons in 2019, so this could be presented to him at either con, or both, depending on how excited y’all are about this.

This would be for Jason’s original songs, only, nothing from the Covers albums. The point is to be inspired by his writing, so covers don’t count.

To do this, I will need to hear from at least ten people that you’re interested, so signal boost this to every Jason Manns fan that writes that you know and have them comment or reply to this post that they want in! 

Again, I need to know if y’all want to do this by February 1st, so I have time to organize it.

Idea 2 - A project inspired by Splitting the Seams

The idea is to take a song you’ve written for before, look at the story you wrote last time, and revamp it in some way, the way Louden Swain did by doing new versions of old songs. Was it a Dean x Reader pairing last time? Make it a Sam fic this time. Have you listened to the song since you wrote it and wished you’d gone a different way? Now’s your chance.

This would be open ONLY to people who have written for this project in the past. 

In 2016, there were no restrictions. A few folks wrote fics that are now not allowed (RPF, smut, etc). Rewrites of these fics will only be allowed if they fall under the new rules. 

To do this, I will need to hear from at least ten people. I will tag everyone who’s ever written for this below, so hopefully Tumblr doesn’t eat the tags!

Again, I need to know if y’all want to do this by February 1st, so I have time to organize it.

To review:

For Vegas, we’re doing Amazing and Angela. For DC we’re doing the usual Louden Swain/Station Breaks project.

IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT INTEREST, I will do the ADDITIONAL projects outlined above.

Deadline to let me know how you feel about these additional projects is February 1st!

AO3 is for all kinds of fanfic

And other fanworks, for that matter, but let’s talk about fic: When AO3 was proposed, it was in response to Strikethrough and other similar events. Livejournal deleted a lot of accounts without bothering to distinguish between actual pedophiles, survivor support groups, and 100% consensual fantasy fandom activities being done by adults with other adults (most of which involved RP accounts for 16-year-old Harry Potter characters anyway).

I helped write the first AO3 Terms of Service and set up the Abuse committee. AO3 was always intended to be welcoming to all kinds of fic, no matter how dirty, sick, socially unacceptable, bizarre, or out of fashion. During those initial TOS talks, we specifically discussed grotesque RPF snuff porn as the test case for something all of us on the committee found distasteful but would nonetheless defend because, by defending it, we created a space where all of our own favorite things were protected too.

Policing fic content is a slippery slope. Even if you only police the “worst” stuff, you create an environment where the more sensitive authors and no few of the ones “shipping to cope” are no longer comfortable posting at all. Attacking people for posting fic about rape/abuse/etc. is demanding that all survivors disclose. No amount of whining and backtracking will change this fact. It is a disgusting behavior that drives people from your fandoms and creates needless misery while adding nothing of value to the community.

If you want to kick certain kinds of content off of AO3, you do not belong on AO3 in the first place.

it took me so long to finish these! B-b-but i’m so so soooo happy with the result i’m kinda crying over it! It gives me so much fluff and cuddle-ness(?) I used some super cute pictures of these guys and, well, My drawings are sooo much better when I use real pictures as references! Tried kinda different linearts too.. ((and I think I need to figure out a way to draw opened eyes in a way that looks nice(?))
