Bought on a whim, this summer, at a marketplace in The Placa section of Athens, Greece. THE WALL was a huuuuuge record for me, upon its release, however ponderously pompous it inarguably remains. As an extra bonus, it’s incredibly lightweight, ... quite unlike the sentiments expressed on the record.
This isn’t a band t-shirt at all, but rather a knock-off of a much beloved t-shirt from a vanished age. From the chronicles of England’s 2000 AD (most notable for Judge Dredd), this is the fabled “You Have Been Judged...” design featuring two of the Dark Judges (in this instance Judge Mortis and Judge Death) informing you of your sorry fate, as lovingly illustrated by artist Brian Bolland. Is it a bit tasteless? Sure, but it was famously sported by Jimmy G of Murphy’s Law on the back cover of their debut album from 1987 and by erstwhile Human League vocalist Phil Oakey in the video for his solo 1984 hit, “Together in Electric Dreams” (to be fair, both Phil and Jimmy sported a white version of this shirt). I have been searching for this shirt for literal decades, and finally found it online a couple of weeks back. Another Holy Grail item to check off my list. I lead a very silly life.
Another recent acquisition and a totally not official, but I love this particular image of Jarvis Cocker. And ... it’s purple -- win/win.
Not actually a band t-shirt, but a shirt advertising a now-defunct Chinese restaurant on East Broadway called Mission Chinese Food. I remember their beef with broccoli being something truly special, and I appreciated their black-metal-alluding logo. Evidently, they weren’t very good to their staff, which is unfortunate. Shut down by COVID.
Picked up in the spring of 2022 at the Museum of the City of New York as part of their NEW YORK NEW MUSIC exhibit focussing on the NYC scene of the `70s and `80s, This, of course, being art from my favorite Talking Heads album, REMAIN IN LIGHT
Not a band t-shirt (although there is a NYHC band with the same name, these days). Crazy Eddie was an infamous chain of stereo equipment retailers in the `70s and `80s renowned for their signature bug-eyed advertising and dubious financial shenanigans. Personally speaking, I absolutely SWORE by the outlet on East 57th Street for their selection of import LPs and I quite miss the iterations on 84th and Third and then 86th Street. Sorely missed.
I went on a big XTC kick, recently, upon discovering the sheer sonic joys of the Steven Wilson surround-sound remixes of several of their albums. Sadly, Wilson has not leant his magic to their second album, GO2, pictured on the front of this shirt, but here’s hoping. Procured of Andy Partridge’s BURNING SHED site. Sadly, the back cover is not on the back of the shirt.
Yes, it’s that rarest of items -- a WHITE shirt from the Sisters of Mercy. Not a great pic (sorry), but easily my favorite era of the band (circa 1985). Procured from the official Sisters of Mercy page.
A favorite album of mine from my freshmen year of college, POWER IN THE DARKNESS is the debut record by the Tom Robinson Band. Ostensibly a punk band, but far more refined than the Damned or the Clash, the TRB crafted great, catchy power-pop tunes rife with righteous, egalitarian fury and were quite ahead of their time. The title track alone remains as relevant today as it did in the mid-`70s. I wear this shirt and get completely blank stares in these New York City streets.
I went through a major Plasmatics re-exhumation in 2021, for whatever reason, and devoted numerous posts on my stupid blog to minutia about the legend and lore, include the location of their first album cover shoot, the whereabouts of the pentagram from their METAL PRIESTESS ep, the location of Plasmatics World Headquarters in Tribeca and a couple of posts about some Plasmatics graffiti in Spanish Harlem. That invariably prompted me to order this shirt from their “official” website. It’s a classic.
The show in question was re-scheduled a few times, if memory serves. First cancelled during COVID, later re-scheduled but then postponed at the last minute because Circle Jerks lead singer Keith Morris contracted COVID. When it was re-scheduled during July 2022, I was away. I ordered the shirt off their website in a moment of remorse, but feel like a poser wearing it, having not attended the gig in question. Whatever.
Snatched up at the DAVID BOWIE IS exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum in 2018. I quite like this design, as I adore the LOW album, but also because it incongruously features the same angular font from the IRON MAIDEN logo.
Riffing on the on-so-tired JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE & RINGO variety, my friend Joe Eldridge at SHADEBEAST had a limited run of these made up. If it’s not clear, this extols the singular majesty of the original line-up of Black Sabbath. I love this shirt more than I can say, and none of them are left from his original run
Somewhat shamefully not a legit shirt sold by the man himself, this FOETUS garment depicts the sleeve of my favorite Foetus compilation, that being SINK from 1989. I cannot remember where I found it, but I bought in on the fuckin’ spot.
Another IDLES shirt, this one prized, I believe, at the Brooklyn Steel show I attended in May of 2019. Many people lazily assume it’s a shot of the band, but it’s actually a manipulated portrait of artists Henry Geldzahler (with cigar), Andy Warhol (in sunglasses), David Hockney and Jeff Goodman, taken in 1963 by Dennis Hopper. So yeah, ... it’s cool and pretentious like that.
Upon first hearing a live rendition of a track off their second LP, JOY AS AN ACT OF RESISTANCE, the band IDLES completely captivated me, and I became an instant, zealous fan. I went on to see them at Brooklyn Steel in ... wait for it ... Brooklyn, but this shirt was actually from another stop that I didn’t make it to. My nephew Tristan -- a fellow fan -- went and gamely got me a shirt.
In the summer of 2021, legendary singer/songwriter Donovan reached out to my organization with an urgent desire to create a video wherein he would present a masterclass in songwriting. The task of orchestrating this project fell to me, and I suddenly found myself in regular contact with the great man. To say he was singularly focussed on the project being exactly how he'd envisioned it would be putting it mildly, but I appreciated his zeal, and he never lost his sense of humor throughout the process. At one point in the proceedings, as a show of support and good faith, I opted to buy a t-shirt from his official site. It may seem out of character rubbing shoulders with shirts emblazoned with Killing Joke and the Circle Jerks, but Donovan is indeed a genius, and I periodically sport this one without apology.
