surprisingly, the wait back at the front desk wasn’t as long as he’d expected it to be, he supposed the stock of the place had to be really well organized. he looked down while he smiled wide at his feet, after he saw the gesture. she was fucking adorable.
“ like i said before, i trust you. & that’s not a problem, believe me, i’m used to complicated reads. well, thank you for the recommendations, i’m very sure i will enjoy these. now tell me, louise, how much do i owe you? ”
“ —— maybe you should ask frank next time, you've met him, right?! he might give you a better recommendation on what you men like to read... or even charles! he's the owner and a bibliophile, obviously. you'd like him. but oh well, twenty-eight dollars, mr. max. cash or credit?”
maximrombachmd;
“ ––– just don’t overthink it. i trust your criterion… i mean, you look like a really smart girl. & i would never call you that… hm. jack kerouac, huh? i’m almost sure i’ve heard about him before, but i can’t really say i’ve read anything from him. i… i’ll take both, the two you mentioned. of course, if you have them in stock! i can wait here, and i hope you’ll be around to hear my feedback on your recommendations. ” cue his signature one thousand watt smile.
she's smiling back at him, still unsure if it's because of his bright smile, the things he said to her or, most likely, both of the alternatives. after murmuring an excuse, the redhead walked to the stock, giving herself a few moments to calm down before going back to the main part of the small bookstore, arranging the books in a fancy package, even though he hadn't even asked for it. “ —— jack's an amazing author, although it's not exactly an easy breezy read. most of his works are somewhat biographical, and that's what makes it so interesting for me, yeah. and please, my recommendations aren't that good, plus, you've read most of them. i do hope you like these two.”
maximrombachmd;
“ hmmm. i didn’t read the book, but i watched the movie with my sister… and i’ve already read the other two. however, i must object. while the count of monte cristo is one hell of a book, the black tulip is my favorite. but no, no… tell me about a book you like, something you feel passionate about; a book you could read twenty times and still love it. ” something that would somehow form a connection between me and you.
and there she is, drumming her fingers on the table, trying to come up with a good recommendation that had to be smart, and at the same time, not pretentious. “ —— you should read it, seriously. but oh, that's actually quite complicated. i like too many books to just point out one that really stands when compared to others... well, call me crazy if you want, but i really like jack kerouac's work. i'm currently re-reading on the road 'cause it's been a couple months since the last i read it, but my favorite is, by far, satori in paris. i'm not sure we have it here, i should probably look on the back, that, of course, if you want to read it.”

his position shifted as she spoke, the worry was hearable, but he couldn’t make out why anyone could be mad at her. his eyes fell to the desk while she placed his new purchase into a plastic bag with the name of the library on it, and he spotted something. a half read, wide open book. so, that was what she did on her free time? he wouldn’t help but smile. he wondered what genre she liked to read most, but at least he knew mighty fine it wasn’t medical. ––– and then the most brilliant idea he had had in a while popped into his mind. a little smile drew across his face when he imagined a little lightbulb lighting up on top of his head. jesus, maxim. you’re an adult. “ hey, no. it’s okay, i mean –– i understand why it would strike you as odd. but i can promise there’s nothing to worry about, nobody will be mad at you today. sooooo, hey. i’ve been devouring these books and my brain feels like the morgue. what lighter read would you recommend me? ”
“ —— a lighter read, hm? that depends on how light you want it to be.” her eyes landed on her current read, biting her lower lip while wondering if kerouac would interest him. maybe, louise thought, placing the bag in front of him and walking to one of the big shelves and picking some other books that would probably strike his fancy.
“ —— so hm, there's the book thief, which is really good, whether you are a fan or not of historical fiction. 1Q84, which is slightly dystopian, but still a good pick. anything from alexandre dumas, although i personally think the count of monte cristo is, by far , his best work—but i don't think it really counts as a light read. and, the girl with the dragon tattoo, which i cannot personally review, but a lot of people come here looking for it, so i suppose it's pretty good. well, i can go on and on about books, so you should probably direct me into what you like.”

he gave her a brief smile before her slim back was turned on him, her perfect red curls bouncing around her head as she did. in her absence, he tried to think of a good way to ask her for her number, perhaps score a date or just a chance to see her again. any excuse. he was about to open his mouth the moment he saw her walking back to him with the books –– her words took him by surprise. she noticed, shit. but any lie he could come up with now would be obvious –– his face had betrayed him. “ oh no, no. the books are fine, yes. i –– i lent them to my father and he sort of… expropriated them. i had to get myself a new set.”
louise exhaled quietly after his explanation—if there was anything wrong with his last order, the responsability of arranging everything to give maxim a new book would probably fell to her. feeling slightly less worried, she started to arrange his order inside a big bag, taking more on the package now that she sort of liked him. plus, charles would be really happy to know that she was trying to pamper his clients. “ —— oh, hm, i'm sorry for the question, but well, it's kind of our procedure. the owner would get really mad at me if i hadn't taken care of this.”
maximrombachmd;
he couldn’t make out what it was about her gaze or her smile that he couldn’t help but think she didn’t want him to be there. he could be wrong, and he did hope to be wrong –– he was extremely happy to see her blue eyes again. he nodded as an answer to her question before digging his hand in his front pocket and giving her the order confirmation. “ yes, m’am. i never lose these. ”
“ —— i'll be right back.” she then rushed to the back of the store, looking now for the order #589, only to notice that it had half of the books he got from the lasst time she saw him. confused, louise walked back to the main part of the bookstore arranging the pile of books in front of the guy. “ —— i-i'm sorry to ask but, is there anything wrong with the other books you ordered? if they have missing pages or something we could get you a refund or something. there's no need to buy another one.”
