in countries with similar facilities, this has been observed :
higher electricity costs. according to the international energy agency, last year data centers used around around 485 terawatt-hours . that is equivalent to annual electricity generation of germany. [1]
massive water consumption. large data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons per day, equivalent to the water use of a town populated by 10,000 to 50,000 people [2]
increased pollution. the amount of energy used by ai data centers increases carbon emissions [3]
constant noise and light.
data centers generate noise levels that may exceed 90 decibels. noise levels above 85 decibels are harmful to hearing.
hyperscale facilities require all-night lighting that disrupts the natural (circadian) rhythms of the body, including melatonin production (the hormone that regulates sleep) and sleep-wake cycles. [4]
some places like chile have even halted or challenged these projects over concerns about water security and their impact on local communities.
despite these concerns, the agreement is reportedly moving forward without meaningful public consultation. questions have also been raised about its land use and proposed legal privileges.
We, the undersigned, call on the Philippine government to halt the signing of the Pax Silica agreement until a full, independent, and public environmental, health, and economic impact review is conducted — with real consultation with the communities who will live next to this hub
