Max grinned a bit wildly, but quickly got distracted, eyes following a nearby passing ice-cream truck. Surely he knew the driver by name by now, but that didn’t mean he always got what he wanted. Hadlee made damn sure of that. His mother, of course, kept her gaze on the young woman she’d run into for a moment, attempting to judge the lack of shift in her tone. 

Maybe she really hadn’t meant to offend. “Yeah. It’s just us, for now. Makes for long days, but y’know. Wouldn’t trade it for the world, most of the time.” 

Elise admired that, so she nodded and smiled a bit. She knew it must take a strong woman to do all of it on her own. Elise loved her pack, but it definitely wasn’t the same concept. “That’s really great, you must be a great mother. I’m Elise,” she introduced herself. “I just moved here with my family, most of us are pretty new to the area,” she didn’t skip a beat when calling her pack her family, because for years now that’s just what they were.
