I watched the Endless on amazon and I was so confused ;v; I wanted more aliens and not just spooky death cults

I think the UFO connection is intended as a red herring entirely. while it’s impossible to know whether the antagonistic force is aliens, or a deity or an unknowable inter-dimensional intelligence ala Indrid Cold, think the trick is to see the film (and it’s “prequel” Resolution) as a riff on the cabin in the woods trope. whatever ‘it’ is that controls the mountain, sets the rules, that sends the images and communicates the messages is not human, and therefore it’s motivations are unknowable and terrifyingI think ‘it’ was a compelling presence on screen despite not really being, well, onscreen. on a micro budget like this film, creature effects, either practical or VFX, were likely cost prohibitive. however, there is a grand old horror tradition of withholding from the viewer/reader. I think they play admirably within that framework.the baseball trick still gives me chills. talk about doing the most with the least

world building interlude! So in the oral tradition of the islanders, the ‘Heart of the Water’ is both a balancing force of the natural world and a living creature that communes with the people of the Point (the full name for their land is The Point that Breaks the Water). their belief is that the land chose their tribe from countless others to be the caretakers of a sacred way of life, and they spoke directly with the land through an emissary in the form of a water spirit. for Chief, Hapa in his current state with no memory, no voice, and no connection to the past is because of the damage done to his culture by foreign devils

but back to the original point.. it’s a cool thought. Super Sayain Hapa. Hapa does sort of have an ultimate form, so to speak. I think I’ve mentioned Big Hapa before right?

Would you prefer it if you could live by the ocean/shore, or is that interest more just for the story?

Fun fact: I’ve never lived more than 20 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean, which does feel sort of intrinsically linked to my personality by now as for the story, it helps having that inspiration close by. I think the necessity of the mystery surrounding Hapa goes hand-in-hand with the general mystery of what is *down* there
