Hi! I was just wondering, I've heard the "w" in pinyin pronounced either as w or v. What's up with that? Is it like a regional thing, or is there one correct way to say it?
Hiya!
I have actually not heard that before, even whilst I was in China I didn't hear an awful lot of dialect myself, so I'm not too sure. But people will always understand the 'w'!
You know what, on further recollection, I have heard the 'w' in 为什么 be pronounced as a 'v'!
It’s a regional thing! Like in a Beijing accent, the ‘w’ is often pronounced as a ‘v.’
好玩儿 would sound like “hǎo vánr” for example. Or a scarf would be “véijīn.”
Thanks for the addition! I lived in the south, so I didn't hear too much northern dialect! Regional differences are fascinating
me, at 2 am: there’s no better time than the present. let’s immediately start learning 3 different languages, write a screenplay and several poems, finish all of my assignments, read 12 new books,
新系列!
大家好。今天我要开始新的词汇帖子系列。由于我有社交媒体副修,我觉得这个系列最好的注意。第一个社交媒体APP是 instagram. 我搜索instagram的汉语名字可是他们也用 ’instagram’。(有的人说 “ins” 还是“有关‘ins’ 可是我不知道。
forgive my grammar, it is the bane of my chinese learning existence. anyways, not everything is an exact translate right, for example “私人影集” is like, private collection, not exactly the word “archive” so just things to note! i plan to try to translate the majority of the app, if anyone wants to use instagram in chinese and would like to know what the words mean instead of muscle memory, or just adding extra vocab cause why not! if anyone has requests or recommendations let me know (that is my actual instagram btw you can message me on here or on there).
also, im in the process of editing my videos from china last summer (i stayed in suzhou), is anyone interested in those? lmk hasta luego muchacha latas
再见!
Hello! I'm starting to learn Russian and I have the New Penguin book (which is amazing btw!) but since it doesn't have audio I'd need another resource to practice listening in the meanwhile. What do you recommend? Thank you in advance :)
The things I recommend the most are podcasts and Youtube videos. I am going to only list a few of them.Podcasts:
Slow Russian Podcast
Russian Made Easy
Russian 101 Beginner Listening Comprehension
Youtube:
Real Russian Slow Russian Videos
Amazing Russian
Easy Russian
Other:
Beelinguapp (hear Russian stories with the English translation next to it) [Android] [iOS]
Glossika (listen and then speak the Russian you hear)
Find an Anki deck for Russian with audio
3ears.com
Start listening to normal-paced Russian in order to get used to it. One of the things I used to do was watch interviews on Вечерний Ургант and see what words I could make out, even if I didn’t understand the whole video.

Some environmental German vocabulary doodles!
Me when the kids I’m babysitting talk Polish: oh my god this is such a nice language I wanna learn it
Me when I see some Chinese instructions on a random thing: oh my god this is such a nice language I wanna learn it
Me when I’m watching Skam: oh my god Norwegian is such a nice language I wanna learn it
Me when I’m reading a German text on my German exam: oh my god this is such a nice language I wanna learn it
when I make a mistake in front of a native speaker
U kno what???? Honestly?? All jokes side about the Duolingo owl, Duolingo is one of the only language education services I know of that doesn’t charge for the full course and I really think we don’t appreciate that enough in a world where knowledge is severely (and increasing) restricted based on income. I just went through the app store and downloaded every language app I can find, and the only two that didn’t charge hefty subscription fees to access all the lessons were duolingo and memrise. Support free education.
The Little Prince book in Chinese that I ordered arrived earlier this month. I’ve been reading it from time to time and It’s been really relaxing.
The book is in both English and Chinese. What I do is read one chapter in Chinese first then read it in English after. I obviously don’t know all the words in Chinese but it’s nice to know that I can recognize some characters and remember how to say them.
I got the book from AliExpress by the way!
