her hands are clasped together, resting between open thighs. it's the last hour of her shift and she feels overwhelmed, overworked and exhausted. it's why she's hiding around the corner, perched upon a step. all she need is a little fresh air, maybe a drink and she'll be good to go again. except a voice catches her off guard and she yelps, hands flailing as she falls back slightly. "hi, sorry-what- did you need me?"

"It's my bad arm, anyway." Which had historically already been shot twice, so what's one more injury to add to the list. "I'm fine."
"I'm going to take a look at it, okay? I just want to make sure that you're not going to get an infection or anything. Is that alright?"
Em doesn't back away or run. Xe doesn't step closer, either.
"I've broken and reset bones before, and nothing's broken. I'm sure it's not as bad as it looks."
How much can Em dismiss so this nice nurse gets the message?
"I'd just feel more comfortable if I could take a look at it."
Ellie does step forward, then, because the other doesn't seem to be moving. That feels like a relatively good thing. But she's not entirely sure.
"Can I at least give you some antiseptic wipes? To keep any infections away?"
ellie doesn't know how to stop talking challenge.

You deserve more.
If only that were true. She deserved what she'd had before the accident. She had her family, her people - she had everything. And in the span of a year, she'd managed to lose everyone she cared about bar her brother. Now she was practically his mother because there was nobody else. No long distance families, no out of touch grandparents - they were alone. All alone.
"I expected the world not to kill off the people I cared about."
It comes out a little too blunt for her liking and she inhales softly, rubbing the side of her face.
"I'm sorry. It's just a... tender subject."

"And I suppose that means you have some kind of distraction planned for me?" Because she'd give just about anything to be distracted. Today of all days. The memories are harsh and strong and in the forefront of her mind. All she wants to do is bury herself beneath the blankets and not come back out for a while. She doesn't want to be outside, she doesn't want the reminders of what she's loss. The anniversary is tomorrow and she can feel it in her chest.

Grief doesn't ever stop. It doesn't matter where you are, who you are or what you're doing. Even when you're in the middle of a shift. It comes in waves and she feels like she's drowning in it. Ellie swallows carefully and meets Devi's eyes with a waning smile, though she's trying her best not to seem too down. She doesn't ever want to be known as the debbie downer of the group. However unhealthy that might be.
"I'd really like it if you did."

Cheeks turn a gentle shade of pink, fingers wringing together. She's not entirely sure how to respond to something like that. He's far too nice to her and she isn't sure if she deserves it or not. There's so much kindness in his heart, so much he's willing to give to the world and he never seems to expect it back. She lifts her head to meet his eyes a little better, slapping on the bright and broad smile she's well known for.
"You're far too nice, did you know that? How about I get you a coffee or something?" Because she's become incredibly awkward over the last few seconds and she doesn't want to embarrass herself any further. Though she's sure that's already well out of the window, given how bright her cheeks are and how hard her heart is pounding in her chest.
