“I think that sounds perfect.” Blaise grins. “Honeydukes, then this cafe you now of. I like it. Sounds like a lot of fun.” Finally they’ve reached the entrance to their common room, and Blaise gets the door open, holding it so Theo can enter first with all his books in hand, following shortly after. “Did you want to take these back to your room, or—stay out here?”

Blaise isn’t sure if he’s hoping Theodore will stay out in the common room with him, or if he’d rather follow the other Slytherin to his dorm room. Either way, he just wants to be able to spend more time with his friend. —boyfriend? It hardly seems official when they haven’t even gone on their first date yet. But Blaise wants it to be official. Wants it to be more than anything else, and that—that surprises him. He’s not supposed to get this attached, and yet—he has.

Theodore walks through the door happily and excited about the fact that Blaise doesn’t seem to mind his idea for their date —date!!!—at all. He’s looking forward to it, and he can’t wait for Saturday, when their relationship might develop into something more. Unless, of course, it already is, now that they agreed to date. But Theodore doesn’t know how to ask, and so he keeps quiet.

“Bedroom,” he replies and immediately starts walking toward the bedroom that the boys in his year are sharing. This time, it’s him who opens the door, using his elbow to push the door-handle down and leaning against the door in order to push it open. He steps inside and uses his foot to keep the door open for Blaise, smiling brightly. Thankfully, they were alone here. “I’m really looking forward to Saturday, you know.”

Hearing that Theodore doesn’t actually think his idea is stupid, makes Ron genuinely smile. He’s so used to hearing how dumb he can be, that it’s nice when someone agrees with his ideas instead. In fact—it’s really nice. “How about a lovely ivory? Or is that too close to white for you?” Ron prefers ivory over white, even if it’s a subtle difference. He also thought it would compliment the red and green very nicely.

“If we can at least agree on colors and a date, then I think my mother would probably love to take it from there.” And if he’s honest, he doesn’t think he really minds. He remembers how stressed out Bill and Fluer would get over planning their wedding until Molly stepped in and handled almost everything. Of course—there was also a war brewing at that point. Now there isn’t one.

“We’ll have to work on a guest list, too. Any friends you still might have from Hogwarts are more than welcome of course. And Mum’s going to want to know who will be in the wedding party.” He pauses a moment, thinking. “I hope you don’t mind that I want Harry to be my best man.”

“Ivory is perfect,” is all he replies because it is perfect and it makes him happy to know that his wedding is at least going to look pretty. He can already imagine the decoration on the tables, red roses everywhere—pretty much what he had always dreamed of as a little boy except that now, he has a fiancé to imagine right next to him. It’s a thought that embarrasses him, makes him feel quite childish. Which is why he doesn’t tell Ron.

“Guest list. Of course.” Theodore realises that this is going to be the depressing part for him. He wants his aunt there, of course, but except from her, he feels like he shouldn’t invite the people he cares about. Not because he doesn’t want them there, oh no! It’s more that he fears it wouldn’t end very well.

“Why would I mind?” he asks, thankful that he can focus on something else ( except that it makes him wonder if his choice for his best man was actually that clever; he realises it isn’t ). “Judging from how the two of you interacted with each other at school, I assume you’re pratically brothers. Besides, I don’t dislike any of you.”

Neville wasn’t one to care about such things so long as Theodore was comfortable. A soft laugh left him and he nodded. “I’ve let a lot of school…rivalries become water under the bridge. War changes your perspective on a lot of things. I’m sure, Theodore, that we’ll make this work.” He smiled at his fiance, crossing an ankle over his knee. “Moreover, you’re not a troll by any means. Why would I run away screaming?”

“We could play a game of sorts, if you like? You ask a question, I answer. And then I get to ask a question and you answer.”

You’re not a troll by any means? Was that Neville’s way of letting him know that he found him attractive, or at least not ugly? Whatever it was, though, Theodore decided to ignore it for now, because the suggestion of playing a little game sounded quite appealing to him. He knew practically nothing about the former Gryffindor, and it only made sense to change that.

“I like that.” He smiled, tilting his head. “Alright, I’m starting so—what do you want to do for a living? That’s definitely something I need to know about my future husband.”

“You’re quite welcome.” He said, heading into the kitchen to get said food for Theodore. Coming back, he set it on a table near Theo and patted his arm gently before turning to leave.

“Wait.” He turned around as Neville moved to leave, reaching out to the other and gently grabbing his wrist in order to hold him back. He couldn’t deny that a break was very welcome, no matter how desperate he was to finish what he was working on, and Neville was nice and great to have around.

“Would you mind staying for a bit?” Theodore asked, only now looking up at the other. He needed the distraction to clear his mind a little bit. “Tell me about what happened today?”

Ron had told himself that he wasn’t going to blush. He was an adult now, adults didn’t blush. —right? Apparently that’s wrong, because when Theodore said that he would look great in a green shirt, his face tinged pink. “Well, uhh, thank you,” he stutters. He’s heard before that redheads look good in green but wearing that color always made him feel like he was betraying his house. Then again—

“You’d probably look really good in red. Or gold.” And he begins to think that maybe it shouldn’t be such a joke after all. Surely there had been others who used their house colors to get married in, to symbolize the unity they were forming between two different people.

“Bloody hell. You know, red and green might not be such a bad idea after all, if we want to show any sort of unity, yeah? We’re not in Hogwarts anymore, but it was still a big part of our lives, and if we were to wear each other’s colors—?” It’s a stupid idea, at least that’s what he’s telling himself, so if Theodore shoots it down, if he laughs at it, then Ron won’t be hurt. Besides, it’s just one idea, one possibility out of hundreds.

He can’t stop a bright smile from appearing on his lips, feeling strangely happy and content with the situation as a whole. Not only has he managed to make Ron blush, no! He has also been complimented himself, and the idea of using their house colours for their wedding after all sounds quite good to him.

“I’d love that, actually,” Theodore says and it’s the truth. He doesn’t mind wearing red—especially not if Ron is right and it really looks nice on him—and it could certainly do good for their image. Besides, they were just colours in the end, technically nothing special, even if it feels like it.

“I mean—just because we wear these colours, that doesn’t mean we have to use them to decorate as well.” As Ron had said, a Christmas wedding isn’t exactly what he wants for that day. “I think we should go with a rather neutral colour for the decoration in general, and then maybe add some red flowers and greenery to match our shirts. The perfect example of complementary colours.”

The relationship between Theodore and his father is... complicated, and has been since Theodore started going to Hogwarts. But we have to start early in his life.

William and Theodora Nott both raised their son in the traditional way, teaching him about blood purity and everything else they valued as supporters of the Dark Lord. Except they didn’t exactly tell Theodore that they had always supported the Dark Lord and still did, for little children tend to speak openly without understanding why some things are better unsaid, and they couldn’t risk Theodore accidentally telling anyone about that; the war was over, after all, and it would be stupid to let the world know that they still believed in the Dark Lord.

Add to this that his parents truly loved and spoiled him whenever they could, and you get a little boy who’s the perfect image of spoiled rich brat who believes in the traditionalism of the wizarding world and who truly adored his parents.

The only problem with this is that his mother worked against this without even knowing.

By telling him about the history of his own family, she raised Theodore to be interested in pretty much anything that had happened at some point in the past. This lead to him starting to read everything he could get his hands on, and he ultimately started to think. That was where things went wrong.

He started connecting opinions to historical events and how those lead to other historical events and how those, in return, influenced the opinions of the people. He started seeing other points of view throughout history, he learnt about the agony that came with suppressing minorities, and this understanding made him more sensitive for more recent events and the opinions that came with them. He looked at the halfblood and muggleborn kids in his year and unlike his friends, he truely saw them.

Theodore didn’t immediately think that blood purism had to be bullshit—he couldn’t quite imagine that his parents would ever teach him anything wrong. But he did come to the conclusion that halfbloods and muggleborns couldn’t be that bad. By the time he started his fifth year, he’d decided that they were no different than purebloods and seeing a fully changed Hogwarts in his seventh year, he reached the conviction that they were better and stronger than purebloods who believed in being superiour because of their blood could ever be.

The thing is, by the time Voldemort has returned, Theodore already knew that war never solved anything, and by the end of his fifth year, he was absolutely convinced that he would never join the Death Eaters.

That was where the relationship between him and his father got complicated. In fact, it had gotten complicated a while ago, during the summer after Voldemort’s return, for he blamed his father for his mother’s death (and he wasn’t wrong—it was the fact that William went back to his Master and therefore forced his son to join them sooner or later that had made her get so terribly sick). But now that he slowly understood how wrong his father had been all along, now that he realised what horrible thing his father supported, he couldn’t quite feel the same towards him anymore.

Theodore still loved his father, for William had never hurt him or forced him to anything at all. In fact, he had always been a very supportive father. But Theodore knew that would change now, that ultimately, his bond to the Dark Lord was more important than being a father.

He was proven right during Christmas 1997.

After his father’s attack on him, Theodore became absolutely terrified of the man while still being unable to hate him for all these happy years they’d had as a family. This is also why he ultimately decided against fighting in the battle; the thought of possibly fighting against his father frightened him, because he was convinced that either fear or love would paralyse him, making him unable to do anything—and William had proven that he didn’t hesitate to attack his own son.

It was only long after the battle that Theodore came to hate his father. He was one of the witnesses in the trial against William Nott, and he was convinced he’d never felt a bigger satisfaction than in the moment that he was told his father would spend the rest of his life in Azkaban.

Neville had complicated feelings after everything was said and done. The war had shown him exactly what he was capable of, that a “socially acceptable” weight had nothing to do with his capabilities - nor did book smarts when it was clear to him now that his brain simply worked in a different way from everyone else’s.

If he could kill a bloody horcrux and fight in a war, was perfect the way he was. Anyone who thought otherwise could get fucked. The complicated part in the equation was the fact that he’d come out of this with PTSD as well.

“I wouldn’t mind at all, Theodore.” Neville said with a smile. “Why don’t we sit down and talk?” He gestured to a nearby couch. “Should probably get to know each other better if we’re to be married.”

“That sounds great.” He returned the smile, then turned in order to sit down on the couch, where he then crossed his legs and rested his hands on top of his knees. It certainly wasn’t the way one would expect him to sit, but it was comfortable and strangely calming; besides, his father wasn’t here to call him out on it.

“You know, I’m kind of glad you didn’t just run away screaming,” Theodore chuckled. “I promise I’ll try to be decent and make this work somehow.”

He would have prefered to get to know someone and fall in love instead of being pushed into a marriage with a man who had, in Theodore’s mind, enough reasons to hate him (he was friends with Draco Malfoy, after all), but he was determined to at least be friendly.

The Slytherin can’t help but grin as he notes that everything he says seems to make Theodore blush more and more, or at least make him blush again, if it’s wearing off. If Blaise being honest is making Theodore blush, he wonders how much more he can make the other Slytherin turn red when he actually turns on the charm on purpose.

In all honesty, Blaise likes the sound of Honeydukes, but he tilts his head at Theodore’s sudden embarrassment about where they might be able to go. Shifting the book in his arm, Blaise lets out a chuckle. “You’re adorable when you blush, I hope you know that.” Then, “all right, where might we go that no one will see us?”

“Shut up,” he mumbles, but the smile on his lips is quite telling; Theodore doesn’t mind at all, because being called adorable is certainly one of those things that he will always approve of. At least if the person calling him that is someone like Blaise, who is clearly the hot one in this dating arrangement.

“It’s just a café, really.” He looks down at his books for a moment, biting his lower lip, but then his eyes meet Blaise’s, and he smiles again. “Most students don’t seem to know about it. It’s quiet and we’d have some privacy. But—what we do between Honeydukes and that is up to you. As I said, I had no plans anyway.”

“Alright, Theo. Well - just in case, I’m going to get you a sandwich, alright?” Neville asked, heading for the door without waiting for confirmation.

“Hm,” Theodore hummed; if in agreement or simply to indicate that he was listening he did not know, but in the end, that didn’t matter anyway. Somehow, he was convinced that Neville would get him something to eat no matter what he said. Picking up his quill again and scratching out a few lines, he added, “Thank you.”

“I’m fine, Neville,” he mumbled, not even looking up from his notes. One might claim that the lie came over his lips too easily when in reality, Theodore simply didn’t notice that he’d gone without food for way too long. “This needs to be finished, I almost figured it out.”
