Whether you are an on set or personal stylist or an assistant looking to stretch the budget, sustainable styling is a great option!!Â
Just like with conventional styling, sustainable styling is all about developing relationships.Â
Reach out to the thrift stores, secondhand shops, and sustainable brands in your area, and introduce them to how stylists work. Explain how pulls are done, and offer paying 10-20% off retail as a rental fee.Â
Some stores or brands may be open to social media coverage as part of their compensation - like vlogs or insta takeovers - talk about it and find a solution that you are both happy with.Â
**Consignment shops may not be interested, because usually they don’t own the clothing on the racks - it belongs to a person somewhere else who wants it to sell ASAP! Doing a rental may add a level of complexity they just don’t want to deal with.Â
Make sure both parties are happy with the terms, and that you have a record - an email or a hold receipt listing the items, and making it clear when they will be returned and in what condition.Â
Please be respectful, because you’re an ambassador for all stylists!! :)Â
The upsides are awesome - your budget can go incredibly far at a thrift store, so whether you’re working on a small budget or just want to fill out your rack with a lot of interesting options, this is a win-win.Â
Good luck!! Let me know if you try this for a shoot or personal styling session!
