Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā sydney scoffs slightly at judeās words, uninterested look ever so present on her countenance.Ā Ā āĀ Ā youāre welcome.Ā Ā āĀ Ā replies dryly, not even looking over in her direction when she speaks to her. instead, she inspects her manicure, noticing how her nail polish has chipped. shit, she never lets it get this bad. is usually good about sticking to her self care routine. making her haircut appointment every two months, visiting the nail salon, getting her eyebrows waxed; she has an image to uphold and this small, shabby town was not going to take that vanity from her. not that she gives a shit what anyone thinks. has made more than enough enemies around for just doing her job. not everyone is a fan and she expects that. itās normal. more than enough people engage in her show, sheās seeing the growth as the days go by. even has neighboring towns chiming in on the gossip and happenings of crescent shore. sydney is getting enough attention to keep her ego satisfied and all she has to do is play storyteller.
sometimes, when sheās conversing with her co-host and trusty assistant, she does question her own morale since these are real people sheās talking about and not just characters in a book or television show. three girls are missing and there is a deviant amongst them, potentially stalking a new victim. if theyāre working out of crescent shore, then the probability of them going after another local is high and since sydney is now technically considered a ā townie ā she should be watching her back. luckily, sheās got two eyes on the back of her headĀ Ā ( tosin chu )Ā Ā and sheās more than capable of handling herself.Ā
the elevator still isnāt moving and she tries not to be impatient but sheās really not in the mood to share this weird tension with jude. they donāt say anything to one another, the silence is piercing her ears and this has sydney leaning in to press the ā2ā again. nothing.Ā Ā āĀ Ā goddamnit.Ā Ā āĀ Ā grumbles out, sighing loudly at the situation they find themselves in.Ā Ā āĀ Ā not even surprised. look at this shithole. of course they donāt have a properly working elevator.Ā Ā āĀ Ā talking to herself out loud, syd then presses the button with a bell on it expecting for some kind of emergency tone to ring out but sheās met with nothing once again.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā a huff of sardonic laughter escapes judeās nose as the elevator stops. her eyes dart to the permit framed on the wall: expired. she wishes she could be more surprised that even the police station is lax enough to let standards drop, but she canāt seem to summon the shock. readjusting to the way of life in the sleepy beach town has been harder than jude expected ā having adapted to the speed of a city, she finds herself struggling with patience, there is nothing more frustrating than incompetence. and all this is very⦠crescent shore-y; god forbid anyone schedule an elevator inspection to be sure everything is running correctly, theyād all rather wait for a problem to become unavoidable than take any preventive measures.
sydney jabs ā2ā again, jude watching silently; she could tell sydney to save herself the effort, itās not going to work, but she would much rather sit in silence while they wait for an operator to come fix the issue. she doesnāt mind the hostile tension thatās settled in the air between them, both used to dealing with prickly sources and prickly enough herself to feel at home in the awkwardness. itās not like she has anything nice to say to sydney anyway. sheād rather watch her sweat.
sydney, however, doesnāt seem to agree, breaking the silence with a frustrated grumble. despite having run away from crescent shore at the first opportunity, only looking back to check on her family, sydneyās comment has jude feeling defensive of her hometown. never mind that jude had near identical thoughts. crossing her arms over her chest, she gives sydney a dismissive glace. āand yet you chose to come here. what, not enough victims for you to exploit in more idyllic towns?ā and judging from judeās own time in new york, itās only the small town mentality that can be manipulated and weaponized for sydneyās brand of moral panic. ācanāt imagine anything elseās keeping you here. except for, yāknow, this elevator.ā
