Dementia Patients and Aggression.
Caregivers taking care of the elderly or your loved one is bound to experience an unstable shift in their preferences, daily routines, personal relationship and other aspects of their life. Apart from this, the stress-causing factor can be the hostility from the people they care. This behaviour exhibited by people with Dementia is due to the altered view of reality. They become anxious, aggressive, and paranoid as Dementia affects the brain, and sometimes they display violent behaviour.
The following tips are from our caregivers to help calm your loved ones in a stressful situation.
Ensure to check that they do not have physical pain and check for pain spots in their body. If there is any physical pain kindly, address the source. This could be one of the reasons for their physical aggression.
Ensure to be calm and composed when they are displaying signs of aggression. Do not mirror their behaviour, or raise your voice. Give them space to breathe and relax.
Ensure that you support them by maintaining your calm. Gently place your hands on their arm or shoulder to help them relax.
They may be feeling negative emotions, such as sadness, loneliness, frustration, etc and therefore, there could be a sign of aggression.
Keep a calm environment and ensure that your TV, Music are all turned off. Ensure that they have space to be calm, and composed.
Ensure to look for potential triggers, try, and remove the stimuli for their wellbeing.
Every individual is going to have various symptoms of Dementia. Therefore, the way they respond to it will be different. Take care of them with kindness, compassion and empathy.
