Male mods favoured the clean, Italianate style suits. Known for living for the weekend, they worked hard during the week in white collar jobs (this in itself was a revelation, as they generally came from working class backgrounds that were traditionally blue collar) the subculture was notorious for amphetamine use. Up until 1964 the drugs were not hard to come by and not at all illegal, as women in particular were issued them by doctors as a calmative, therefore many young people would steal from their mums stash (some things never change).
