Random late night thought but, I remember when I used to listen to music mostly throught either this platform or soundcloud. Subscriptions didn't exist and I yet to have spotify in 2014/2015.
8Tracks was much more special because you could create playlist with any youtube video so you could choose from far more songs compared to other streaming platform, it also used to be an app! And you had a whole tagging sistem you could basically find any fandom or ship.
Plus since the whole point of those playlist was to re-create the feeling of mixtape people created for you, they wouldn't havr more than 20 tracks, usually there would be just around 12.
I found some of the best jems there and I still go back to the website now and there (mostly for GF playlists)

i remember back during tumblr's prime days before spotify, people would back playlists on 8tracks. you could only have one song per artist which was a bummer, but people would make graphics for characters to go along with the playlist. it was so nice too because there was a website where you could easily download them... RIP
Hello tumblrinas as you may have noticed our dearly beloved wife, 8tracks, appears to finally be down for the count. The website went under only to resurface late last year, but went dark again in December 2024 and has yet to spring back, so while I will continue to check in on her, it may be time to admit it's over.
However, there were some really superb playlists on 8tracks, so I have done my best here to recreate as many playlists as I could on Spotify. Is it the same? No, certainly not--Spotify's more limited "official" format means that things like unreleased tracks do not exist in Spotify's library and cannot be added to playlists. In other instances, the original poster gave the song but not the artist, so I've done my best to guess which version fits the vibes of the playlist best.
Below are all the playlists I was able to put together. This is obviously only a tiny fraction of the playlists that were on 8tracks, but it's something, and you may find something below you used to listen to!
