It would’ve been easy for Seth to tell that she was annoyed, the woman was trying to eat her brunch in peace.            ❛ Could you be any louder? ❜            She said with an eye roll, expressing her obvious disdain for drummer.            ❛ I can’t even eat my brunch without you making all this racket. ❜             Irritation in her voice was mora than obvious as Yuri was still holding her yogurt from the brunch she was trying to ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ, rolling her hand over her own spoon — voice cutting out again.            ❛ Some people want to be able to have a quiet morning whether or not it’s 11:03. ❜

   seth   had   seen   yuri   around   the   complex   more   times   than   he   could   count.   passing   each   other   in   the   lobby,   waiting   for   the   lift   in   awkward   silence,   catching   glimpses   of   her   through   the   courtyard.   that   was   about   the   extent   of   their   relationship.   and—there   was   this,   too.   a   lot   of   yuri   knocking   on   his   door   with   a   complaint   already   loaded   on   the   tip   of   her   tongue,   and   seth   standing   there   with   a   pair   of   drumsticks   in   hand,   trying   to   decide   whether   he   should   apologise   first   or   defend   himself.   at   least   he   wasn't   pounding   away   at   two   in   the   morning   or   blasting   music   through   paper-thin   walls   while   everyone   else   was   trying   to   sleep.   he   kept   his   practice   to   reasonable   hours.   "you   moved   next   door   to   a   drummer."   he   shrugs,   "i'm   not   sure   what   kind   of   peaceful   woodland   retreat   you   were   expecting.   if   you   want   quiet,   i   suggest   you   buy   noise-cancelling   headphones."

𝟷.     𝙸𝙽𝚃.     𝙴𝙻𝙴𝚅𝙰𝚃𝙾𝚁     —     𝙳𝙰𝚈. 

                                        ❝          javi   notices   it   almost   immediately   when   lukas   pulls   his   wrist   free   from   his   hand.   the   sudden   emptiness   against   his   palm   feels   strange,   almost   like   there’s   supposed   to   be   something   there,   but   he   quickly   brushes   the   thought   aside   before   he   can   think   too   much   about   it.

                          he   can’t   just   keep   being   touchy   with   lukas   anyway.

                          lukas   isn’t   some   random   person   he   can   casually   invade   the   personal   space   of   without   thinking   twice.   he’s   one   of   the   first   few   friends   javi   made   when   he   joined   the   company,   and   the   last   thing   he   wants   is   to   make   things   awkward   between   them   by   forcing   physical   affection   lukas   might   not   even   be   comfortable   with.   sure,   lukas   is   playful.   he   says   things   that   sound   suspiciously   like   flirting   half   the   time   and   constantly   finds   ways   to   tease   him,   but   javi   has   never   really   figured   out   whether   any   of   it   means   something   or   if   that’s   simply   how   lukas   is.   maybe   he   talks   to   everyone   like   that.   maybe   javi   is   just   reading   too   much   into   harmless   jokes   because   they   spend   so   much   time   together.

                          and   this   simple   act   of   pulling   his   wrist   away   only   makes   javi   assume   one   thing.   maybe   lukas   is   confident   with   his   words,   but   physical   affection   is   where   he   draws   the   line.   so   javi   doesn't   reach   for   him   again.   instead,   he   subtly   slides   to   the   side,   creating   a   little   more   space   between   them   as   his   gaze   shifts   toward   the   numbers   above   the   elevator   doors.   suddenly,   he   finds   himself   hoping   they   reach   the   lobby   sooner,   if   only   to   escape   the   awkwardness   he   probably   created   in   his   own   head.

                          “   wow,   ako   pa   talaga   mafa-fall   sa   ’yo,   ah?   ”      javi   counters,   a   small   laugh   escaping   him   as   he   glances   back   at   lukas.      “   baka   ikaw.   ”      his   grin   widens   as   he   shakes   his   head.      “   sa   sobrang   pang-aasar   mo   sa’kin,   hindi   mo   namamalayan,   gusto   mo   na   pala   ako.   ”      right   on   cue,   the   elevator   dings.   the   doors   slide   open,   and   the   employees   packed   inside   immediately   begin   filing   out   into   the   lobby.   javi   waits   for   everyone   else   to   leave,   leaving   him   and   lukas   as   the   last   two   people   inside.      “   halika   na,   ”      he   says,   stepping   out   of   the   elevator   and   glancing   back   at   him.      “   gutom   na   ’ko.   ”

   if   a   picture   was   worth   a   thousand   words,   then   actions   had   to   be   worth   a   million.   or   maybe…   lukas   was   probably   overthinking   it.   maybe   javi   shifting   his   weight   in   an   elevator   was   just   javi   shifting   his   weight   in   an   elevator,   the   most   ordinary   and   meaningless   thing   a   person   could   do   in   a   confined   space.   lukas   was   probably   reading   too   much   into   nothing.   he   did   that   sometimes. 

but.

the   elevator   was   small,   a   confined   space,   and   javi   had   stepped   to   the   side.   inches.   that   was   all   it   was.   only   a   matter   of   inches,   a   movement   that   could   mean   nothing.   lukas   knew   this,   yet   he   still   felt   the   distance   between   them.   in   the   cramped   elevator,   it   felt   like   miles.   he   leaned   back   against   the   wall,   cool   metal   meeting   his   shoulders.   the   elevator   was   moving   slowly   enough   that   he   had   too   much   time   to   be   aware   of   javi   standing   next   to   him.

lukas   felt   the   heat   creeping   up   the   sides   of   his   neck,   reaching   his   cheeks.   being   semi-confronted   with   something   accurate   enough,   he   tried   to   keep   his   expression   as   even   as   he   could   manage,   which   was   not   as   even   as   he   would   have   liked.

javi   had   hit   the   nail   squarely   on   the   head.   or—well,   he   had   gotten   most   of   it   exactly   right.

lukas   had   always   been   like   this.   teasing   came   as   naturally   to   him   as   breathing,   especially   around   the   people   he   liked.   it   was   easier   than   being   sincere,   or   easier   than   admitting   that   someone   made   him   nervous.   he'd   poke,   prod,   throw   out   shameless   compliments   with   a   grin   plastered   across   his   face,   watching   for   the   inevitable   eye   roll   or   flustered   reaction.   it   was   how   he'd   always   flirted.   hell,   most   of   the   people   he'd   dated   could   probably   trace   the   beginning   of   their   relationship   back   to   lukas   refusing   to   stop   pestering   them.   he   flirted   first,   asked   questions   later.   there   was   a   certain   thrill   in   watching   walls   come   down   one   cheeky   remark   at   a   time.

the   only   thing   javi   had   gotten   wrong…   was   that   lukas   wasn't   confused   or   unaware   of   his   own   feelings. 

he   kept   his   mouth   shut.   goddddd,   he   really   should   tone   it   down.   ease   off   the   constant   flirting,   and   to   stop   treating   every   conversation   like   an   opportunity   to   make   javi   roll   his   eyes.   if   it   was   making   him   uncomfortable—if   it   was   the   reason   he'd   started   putting   distance   between   them,   physically—then   maybe   the   teasing   wasn't   worth   it   anymore.

the   elevator   chimed,   the   doors   sliding   open   with   a   ding!   lukas   pushed   himself   off   the   wall   and   fell   into   step   just   behind   javi,   deliberately   leaving   a   little   more   room   between   them   than   he   usually   would've.   "alam   ko   na   oorderin   ko."   his   voice   was   totally   brighter   than   the   thoughts   swirling   around   in   his   head.   "mazesoba!   ikaw?"

art  lets  out  a  little  sigh,  his  hand  coming  up  to  toy  with  his  necklace.  it's  not  like  he  can  really  blame  lukas,  he  is  important  and  popular  around  here!  so   of  course,  it  means  people  know  him  and  want  to  talk  to  him.  but  at  the   same  time,  it  feels  like  they  are  just  from  two  different  worlds  right  about   now,  and  lukas  is  just  running  miles  ahead  of  him.  "it's  okay.  if  you  have   stuff  to  do  and  people  to  talk  to,  i  can  just  go  home,  and  we  can   reschedule,"  his  gaze  flickers  away  from  lukas.  he  does  not  really  know   anyone  here,  at  least  in  the  way  that  lukas  does.  "it's  really  okay,  i  promise," he  tries  to  twist  his  hand  out  of  lukas'  hold  so  that  he  can  wrap  his  own   fingers  around  his,  giving  his  hand  a gentle  squeeze. "but  you  should  work  on  your  work-life  balance," art  tries  to  tease  but  there is  a  little  bit  of  an  edge  to  his  words  no  matter  how  much  he  tries  to hide  it.

   lukas   knew   a   lot   of   people.   a   result   of   years   of   being   in   this   industry.   he   was   good   at   his   job,   that   it   had   become   difficult   to   distinguish   when   he   was   being   friendly   because   his   feelings   were   genuine,   or   if…   well...   if   he   was   just   doing   it   because   it   was   work.   but.   either   way,   every   single   one   of   them   were   mere   acquaintances.   all   of   it,   the   entire   vast   social   infrastructure   of   lukas'   professional   life   amounted   to   acquaintances,   not   friends.   yet   lukas   had   built   his   livelihood   on   'connections'   and   had,   somewhere   in   the   process,   ended   up   with   hundreds   of   people   who   thought   they   knew   him   and   almost   none   who   actually   did.   art   was   the   exception.   in   return   lukas   knew   art   the   same   way;   knew   him   like   the   back   of   his   hand.   in   the   windows   between   conversations,   between   the   rounds   that   had   taken   him   across   the   room   and   back   again,   he'd   been   tracking   art   peripherally.   he   knew,   art   wasn't   in   it   tonight.   the   tells   were   there   for   lukas   to   read.   he   stepped   closer,   closing   the   distance   between   them,   reaching   for   art's   hands.   "it's   not   okay,"   he   said,   "i'm   sorry.   i'm   here,   i   swear.   i'm   done   with   my   rounds.   you   have   my   full   attention   now."

                                        ❝          “   hay,   sobrang   nakakadiri   talaga   minsan   maglinis   ng   dumi   ng   cows.   sana   wag   na   lang   sila   magdumi   ulit,   ”   she   groans,   dragging   out   a   sigh   as   she   looks   over   at   daphne,   who   looks   just   as   worn   out.   her   face   brightens,   lips   spreading   into   a   wide   smile   as   she   walks   over   and   hooks   her   arm   around   hers.   “   thank   you   so   much   for   helping   me!   the   best   ka   talaga.   ikaw   lang   talaga   mapagkakatiwalaan   ko   dito.   ”   she   leans   in   right   after,   pressing   a   quick,   playful   kiss   against   her   cheek.   “   tara!   let’s   clean   up   muna,   tapos   libre   kita   ng   ice   cream   diyan   sa   bayan.   ”

   daphne   was   not   finicky   about   mess.   she   had   grown   up   on   a   farm,   used   to   waking   before   sunrise   and   pulling   on   boots   that   were   already   crusted   from   the   day   before,   and   going   out   into   the   early   cold   to   deal   with   whatever   the   animals   had   left   behind   in   the   night.   daphne   had   been   cleaning   up   cow   shit   since   she   was   old   enough   to   hold   a   shovel.   had   gotten   it   on   her   hands,   her   clothes,   her   face   on   at   least   three   occasions.   so   whatever   state   her   hands   were   in   now   was   not,   in   daphne's   opinion,   a   crisis.   and   honestly,   daphne   would   get   her   hands   dirty   every   single   day   for   the   rest   of   her   foreseeable   future   if   the   payout   was   what   it   had   been   today:   a   kiss   on   the   cheek   from   daisy.   it   was   all   sooooooo   worth   it.   daphne   would   shovel   an   entire   barn   by   hand   if   daisy   kissed   her   at   the   end   of   it.   "a-ah—ayos   lang!"   she   said,   "sige,   uh,   we   can   go   to   mine?   ikaw   nalang   ang   mauna   sa   shower."

                                        ❝          cass   honestly   hadn’t   expected   beau   to   agree   to   coming   up   to   his   unit.   after   all,   this   arrangement   had   only   been   established   a   few   hours   ago.   there   should   still   be   a   clear   boundary   between   pretending   to   be   boyfriends   and   asking   for   something   more.   technically   speaking,   they’re   still   strangers.   they’ve   only   scratched   the   surface   of   getting   to   know   each   other.   then   again...

                          how   many   strangers   has   cass   kissed   before?

                          how   many   has   he   brought   back   to   his   condo?   or   followed   home   for   a   one-night   stand?   more   than   his   friends   would   probably   like   to   know.   that’s   exactly   why   he’s   enjoyed   being   single   for   so   long.   he   likes   the   freedom   of   it.   the   thrill   of   meeting   someone   new,   spending   the   night   chasing   pleasure,   then   waking   up   with   no   expectations,   no   obligations,   and   certainly   no   commitment   waiting   for   him   the   next   morning.

                          so   inviting   beau   upstairs   shouldn’t   feel   like   a   big   deal.   he’s   done   this   countless   times   before.   the   only   thing   that   makes   tonight   different   is   beau.   they’ve   already   established   some   sort   of   connection   beyond   physical   attraction.   they’ve   talked   about   their   families,   their   jobs,   their   favorite   songs,   and   all   the   little   things   that   slowly   make   a   stranger   feel...   less   like   one.   then   again...

                          friends   don’t   usually   make   out   in   the   middle   of   a   crowded   dance   floor.   so   maybe   beau   doesn’t   count   either.

                          by   the   time   they   reach   unit   1004,   cass   keys   in   the   passcode   and   pushes   the   door   open   before   stepping   aside   to   let   beau   in   first.      “   so...   here’s   my   place.   ”      a   small   smile   tugs   at   his   lips.      “   make   yourself   at   home.   ”      he   slips   off   his   shoes   near   the   entrance,   waiting   for   beau   to   do   the   same   before   locking   the   door   behind   them.

                          the   condo   looks   exactly   how   most   people   would   imagine   a   bachelor’s   place.   minimalist.   modern.   a   spacious   loft   with   floor-to-ceiling   windows   overlooking   the   city,   a   living   room   large   enough   to   entertain   guests,   a   marble   kitchen   island   separating   the   kitchen   from   the   dining   area,   a   guest   bathroom   downstairs,   and   upstairs,   his   bedroom   alongside   the   main   bath.

                          nothing   feels   overly   decorated.   everything   has   its   place.

                          cass   gestures   toward   the   living   room.      “   sit   wherever   you   want.   ”      he   glances   over   his   shoulder.      “   may   gusto   ka   ba?   water?   wine?   beer?   ”      without   waiting   too   long   for   an   answer,   he   walks   to   the   kitchen   anyway   and   pours   beau   a   glass   of   water   first.   he   figures   it’s   the   safest   option   after   everything   they   drank   earlier.

                          returning   to   the   living   room,   he   hands   beau   the   glass   before   settling   onto   the   couch   beside   him.   not   too   close.   not   too   far.   just   enough   for   their   shoulders   to   almost   brush   if   either   of   them   leans   the   slightest   bit.   

                          “   i’m   not   gonna   lie,   ”      cass   says   with   a   quiet   laugh.      “   we   looked   really   convincing   back   there.   ”      he   turns   his   head   to   look   at   beau.      “   your   acting   is   sooooo   good.   ”      a   grin   spreads   across   his   face   before   it   gradually   softens.      “   even   the   kiss   was   good…   ”      an   understatement.   probably   the   best   kiss   he’s   ever   had.   but   that   thought   stays   exactly   where   it   belongs—   in   his   head.

                          he   clears   his   throat,   suddenly   finding   the   throw   pillow   beside   him   far   more   interesting   than   beau’s   eyes.      “   but,   um…   ”      his   fingers   absentmindedly   fiddle   with   the   corner   of   the   pillow   as   he   debates   whether   this   is   a   good   idea.      “   i   think   we   should   practice   more.   ”

                          he   finally   looks   back   at   beau,   an   innocent   smile   playing   on   his   lips   despite   the   unmistakable   glimmer   of   mischief   in   his   eyes.      “   i   mean…   ”      he   shrugs   casually.      “   we   need   to   be   more   convincing,   right?   ”

   beau   wasn’t   entirely   sure   what   he   had   been   expecting   when   he   followed   cassius   into   his   condominium   unit.   perhaps   something   impersonal,   or   a   place   that   looked   as   though   its   owner   only   ever   passed   through   it   between   work,   nights   out,   and   whatever   else   occupied   his   time,   but   whatever   vague   image   he   had   formed   in   his   head   disappeared   the   moment   the   door   opened   and   he   stepped   inside.   the   space   was   pretty   neat   and   sleek,   actually   something   that   made   sense   for   cassius.   comfortable   without   being   overly   showy,   expensive   enough   that   beau   could   tell   he   lived   well   but   not   so   extravagantly   decorated.   there   were   enough   small   signs   of   actual   life   scattered   around   to   keep   it   from   resembling   a   showroom.

and,   honestly,   it   also   looked   like   a   pretty   good   place   to   hang   out.

the   moment   beau   lowered   himself   onto   the   couch,   his   mind   wandered   into   that   peculiar   place   it   occasionally   went   whenever   he   entered   someone   else’s   home   late   at   night.   a   curiosity   where   he   began   wondering   how   many   people   had   been   here   before   him.   how   many   others   had   crossed   the   same   threshold   with   the   same   knowing   smile,   sat   exactly   where   he   was   sitting   now   while   pretending   not   to   read   too   much   into   the   invitation,   accepted   a   drink   with   the   understanding   that   the   night   was   probably   not   going   to   end   with   conversation   alone.   how   many   had   stretched   out   across   this   couch?   how   many   had   been   led   up   to   cassius’   bedroom?   how   many   had   slept   in   his   bed   only   to   wake   the   next   morning,   gather   their   clothes,   and   leave   with   little   more   than   a   goodbye   and   the   unspoken   agreement   that   neither   of   them   owed   the   other   anything   after   that?

he   had   been   on   both   sides   of   that   arrangement   enough   times   to   know   how   simple   it   could   be,   and   how   absolutely   convenient   it   was   to   enjoy   somebody   for   a   few   hours   without   asking   what   came   after.   there   was   always   comfort   in   knowing   exactly   where   things   ended.   walking   away   before   things   became   complicated,   and   beau   had   always   been   exceptionally   good   at   disappearing   once   the   night   was   over.

except   this   time,   he   could   not   quite   do   that.   because,   technically,   cassius   was   his   boyfriend   now.

a   fake   boyfriend,   yes,   and   only   for   a   month,   but   a   boyfriend   nonetheless,   which   meant   beau   could   not   exactly   slip   out   the   following   morning,   stop   replying,   and   erase   the   entire   encounter   from   his   life.   he   could   not   grant   cassius   the   usual   privilege   of   becoming   a   stranger   again   the   moment   daylight   came,   because   there   were   still   appearances   to   maintain,   and   plans   to   follow   through   on.

the   idea   was   almost   ridiculous.   he   had   walked   into   the   unit   already   half-expecting   the   night   to   end   in   cassius’   bed,   yet   the   strangest   part   was   knowing   that,   afterwards,   there   would   still   have   to   be   a   next   time—not   necessarily   another   night   like   this,   but   another   dinner,   another   conversation,   and   another   public   display   of   affection   performed   for   cassius’   friends.   and   for   somebody   who   preferred   his   attachments   brief   and   uncomplicated,   that   should   have   been   enough   to   make   him   reconsider.

instead,   it   only   made   him   more   curious.

"tubig   lang,"   beau   said,   settling   further   back   against   the   couch.

he   had   already   drunk   a   lot   that   evening,   enough   to   feel   loose   and   warm   but   not   enough   to   lose   track   of   himself,   and   if   the   night   really   was   going   to   unfold   the   way   he   had   been   anticipating,   then   beau   wanted   to   remain   sober   for   it.   he   wanted   to   know   exactly   what   he   was   doing.

"ah,   good   lang   pala   kiss   ko?"   the   question   left   him   with   a   disbelieving   laugh,   his   brows   lifting. good   felt   almost   deliberately   understated,   far   too   mild   a   word   for   something   beau   knew   had   affected   cassius   much   more   than   he   was   willing   to   admit.   beau   had   never   been   particularly   humble   about   the   things   he   knew   he   did   well,   and   kissing   was   very   firmly   near   the   top   of   that   list,   right   alongside   flirting   his   way   into   places   he   had   no   business   being   and   making   people   forget   their   own   names.   he   had   enough   experience   to   know   exactly   what   he   was   doing   with   his   mouth,   just   as   he   knew   what   he   was   capable   of   once   things   went   further,   and   modesty   had   never   seemed   especially   useful   when   he   had   years’   worth   of   reactions   proving   that   his   confidence   was   not   entirely   undeserved.

and   cassius   had   certainly   reacted.   beau   very   much   remebered   the   way   his   body   had   answered   to   him,   how   cassius   had   kissed   him   back   with   enough   urgency   and   want   to   make   every   pretence   of   indifference   feel   silly.   there   had   been   nothing   merely good   about   the   way   cassius   had   leaned   into   him,   in   that   brief   loss   of   restraint   beau   had   felt   beneath   his   hands,   and   even   now,   sitting   on   this   couch,   beau   could   still   remember   the   heat   of   it   with   clarity.

if   anything,   it   had   been   cassius’   mouth   that   had   caught   him   off   guard.   his   lips   had   been   softer   than   beau   expected,   warm   and   responsive   and   unfairly   easy   to   get   lost   in.   excellent,   beau   decided.   perfect,   even,   though   he   would   sooner   let   cassius   tease   that   confession   out   of   him   than   offer   it   freely.   it   had   been   the   best   kiss   he   had   had   in   a   long   while.

and   beau   had   been   thinking   about   it   ever   since.   the   memory   had   replayed   at   inconvenient   intervals   throughout   the   night—the   press   of   cassius’   mouth,   the   catch   of   breath   between   them,   the   way   the   entire   crowded   club   had   seemed   to   fall   away   for   those   few   seconds   even   while   the   bass   pounded   hard.   it   had   been   good,   but   it   had   also   been   interrupted   by   sticky   air   and   deafening   music   and   constant   movement.

here,   though,   there   was   none   of   that.

beau   wanted   to   kiss   him   again.

more   than   that,   he   wanted   to   overwrite   that   memory,   maybe   give   them   something   better   to   remember   than   a   kiss   in   the   middle   of   a   crowded   club.   his   gaze   remained   fixed   on   cassius   even   when   cassius   looked   elsewhere,   and   that,   more   than   anything,   made   beau’s   smile   deepen.

he   was   flustered.

so.   cassius   wanted   this   too.

that   knowledge   fed   the   smugness   already   curling   across   his   face.   he   shifted   closer,   sliding   across   the   couch   until   the   gap   between   them   narrowed   to   nothing.   he   turned   sideways   until   his   entire   body   was   facing   cassius,   one   arm   stretched   along   the   back   of   the   couch.   "well,"   beau   murmured,   his   eyes   dropping   to   cassius’   mouth,   "i   guess   there’s   always   room   for   improvement."   his   face   moved   closer,   the   warmth   of   cassius’   breath   ghosting   over   his   lips,   the   tips   of   their   noses   grazing.   he   paused   there,   mouth   barely   brushing   cassius’   in   a   touch   so   light   it   could   hardly   be   called   a   kiss.

"sige,"   he   whispered,   grin   lingering.   "mag-practice   tayo."

then   he   kissed   him   languidly,   savouring   the   first   proper   press   of   cassius’   mouth   as   though   beau   had   all   the   time   in   the   world   to   learn   it.   his   lips   moved   slow,   easing   him   into   the   rhythm   before   deepening   the   kiss,   free   hand   lifting   to   rest   lightly   along   the   side   of   cassius’   neck.   cassius   tasted   faintly   of   whatever   he   had   been   drinking   earlier,   and   beau   found   himself   lingering   on   it,   chasing   the   taste.   he   tilted   his   head,   mouth   parting   against   cassius’,   coaxing   rather   than   demanding,   though   the   restraint   in   it   was   already   beginning   to   strain   as   cassius   responded   againt   him.   beau’s   fingers   tighten   almost   imperceptibly   at   the   nape   of   his   neck,   mouth   growing   hungrier,   though   never   careless.

when   beau   finally   drew   away,   he   did   not   go   far,   eyes   opening   slowly   to   study   the   expression   in   front   of   him.   "hmm,"   he   hummed,   licking   his   own   lips.   "so?   what   do   you   think?"

                                        ❝          by   the   time   they   make   it   back   to   beau’s   car,   cass   is   finally   full.   not   just   from   the   food.   for   the   first   time   all   day,   he’s   had   a   proper   meal   after   surviving   on   nothing   but   coffee   and   liquor—   a   combination   he   knows   is   absolutely   terrible   for   him,   yet   somehow   keeps   repeating   anyway.   but   more   than   that,   he’s   full   of   everything   he   learned   about   beau   tonight.   the   little   details   that   make   up   the   man   currently   sitting   behind   the   wheel.   his   family.   his   likes   and   dislikes.   the   stories   about   his   grandfather.   even   the   way   he   talks   when   he’s   passionate   about   something.

                          and,   admittedly…   he’s   also   full   of   satisfaction   after   seeing   beau   repost   his   instagram   story   without   hesitation.   it’s   such   a   small   thing.   stupid,   even.   yet   it   scratches   an   itch   cass   has   carried   around   for   years.

                          he’s   dated   enough   people   to   know   how   difficult   it   is   to   get   someone   to   acknowledge   you   publicly.   some   would   dodge   every   photo.   others   would   ask   him   not   to   tag   them.   a   few   made   him   feel   almost   embarrassing   to   be   seen   with.   he   remembers   practically   begging   some   of   them   to   show   him   off.   just   once.   just   enough   to   make   him   feel   chosen.

                          with   beau…   he   doesn’t   even   have   to   ask   twice.   he   doesn’t   have   to   ask   at   all.   

                          as   they   pull   back   onto   the   road,   cass   keys   his   address   into   waze   before   confirming   the   route.   after   that,   silence   settles   comfortably   between   them,   broken   only   by   the   music   drifting   softly   from   the   radio.

                          normally,   he’d   fill   it   with   conversation.   tonight…   his   mind   is   elsewhere.   it   keeps   wandering   back   to   everything   beau   shared   with   him   over   dinner.   then   to   something   that   still   doesn’t   quite   make   sense.   the   bill.   cass   was   supposed   to   pay.   that   had   been   part   of   their   arrangement   from   the   very   beginning.   as   far   as   he’s   concerned,   it’s   one   of   the   reasons   beau   agreed   to   become   his   fake   boyfriend   in   the   first   place.

                          and   yet…   beau   had   insisted.   no   matter   how   many   times   cass   reached   for   his   wallet,   beau   simply   paid   for   everything   as   though   it   were   the   most   natural   thing   in   the   world.   after   agreeing   to   accompany   him   to   a   club   full   of   strangers.   after   pretending   to   be   his   boyfriend.   after   driving   him   away   from   the   chaos.   after   driving   him   home.

                          it   doesn’t   add   up.

                          unless...

                          maybe   beau   has   something   else   in   mind   when   it   comes   to   getting   repaid.   the   thought   alone   is   enough   to   make   cass’s   imagination   spiral   right   back   to   the   club.   to   the   kiss.

                          he   really   needs   to   stop   thinking   about   it.   except   he   can’t.   not   when   every   memory   feels   vivid   enough   to   replay   like   it   happened   seconds   ago.   the   warmth   of   beau’s   mouth   against   his   own.   the   way   he   held   his   waist,   firm   enough   to   keep   him   close   without   ever   making   him   feel   trapped.   the   way   their   lips   moved   together   so   effortlessly,   beau   kissing   him   with   a   confidence   that   made   cass   completely   forget   they   were   only   putting   on   an   act.   and   that   damn   tongue.

                          how   easily   it   had   slipped   into   his   mouth,   teasing   him,   tasting   him,   making   cass   meet   it   instinctively   like   they’d   done   it   countless   times   before.   his   entire   body   grows   warm   just   remembering   it.   he   wants   it   again.   wants   beau’s   hand   back   on   his   waist.   wants   to   kiss   him   somewhere   without   flashing   lights,   loud   music,   or   curious   eyes   watching   every   second.   he   wants   to   take   his   time.

                          the   thought   lingers   long   enough   that   the   drive   feels   impossibly   short.   before   he   realizes   it,   beau   is   already   pulling   into   the   parking   area   of   his   condominium.   cass   blinks.   ten   minutes?   surely   it   had   been   longer   than   that.

                          he   looks   out   the   window   before   turning   back   toward   beau.   neither   of   them   has   spoken   much   during   the   drive.   his   fingers   remain   wrapped   around   the   seatbelt   still   stretched   across   his   chest.   he   doesn’t   unbuckle   it   right   away.   instead,   he   sits   there,   debating   whether   he’s   about   to   ask   for   too   much.

                          they're   only   pretending   to   date.   then   again…   boyfriends   do   spend   time   at   each   other’s   places.

                          a   small   smile   slowly   curves   across   his   lips.      “   thanks   for   the   ride,   ”      he   says   quietly.      “   and   for   the   meal.   ”      his   eyes   meet   beau’s.      “   sa   susunod,   ha?   let   me   pay.   kasama   ’yon   sa   arrangement,   eh.   ”      a   soft   chuckle   follows   before   he   finally   presses   the   release   button   on   his   seatbelt.   click.   his   hand   reaches   for   the   door   handle.   but   he   doesn’t   open   it.   instead,   he   bites   lightly   on   his   lower   lip   before   glancing   back   at   beau.

                          “   do   you   wanna   come   up   sa   condo   ko?   ”      his   tone   is   almost   casual.   almost.      “   i   meeeeeeeeean…   ”      he   shrugs   innocently.      “   my   boyfriend   should   at   least   know   what   my   place   looks   like,   right?   ”      the   words   themselves   are   harmless.   cass   isn’t.   there’s   a   knowing   smirk   playing   on   his   lips,   while   the   glimmer   in   his   eyes   gives   away   everything   his   innocent   voice   is   trying   so   hard   to   hide.

                          the   invitation   isn’t   just   about   showing   beau   his   condo.

                          they   both   know   that.

        beau   knew   this   dance   well.   that   was   one   of   the   things   he   had   learned   because   of   the   way   he   lived.   all   of   the   flings   and   the   strangers   and   the   fast   turnover   of   nights   that   were   always   no   strings,   and   no   expectations   beyond   the   moment.   you   pretty   much   begin   to   easily   detect   the   small   tells   people   gave   off   without   meaning   to,   or   meaning   to   completely,   depending   on   the   person.   he   knew   the   script   by   heart,   and   he   could   read   the   subtle   cues:   the   way   someone’s   gaze   would   drop   to   his   mouth   mid-sentence,   the   slight   lean   in   when   they   laughed   at   his   jokes,   the   brush   of   a   hand   against   his   arm.   he   could   tell   when   someone   was   into   him,   when   they   weren’t,   when   they   were   hoping   the   night   would   end   tangled   in   sheets   versus   a   polite   handshake   at   the   curb.   he'd   gotten   good   at   all   of   it,   fluent   enough   that   he   rarely   had   to   think   about   trying   to   comprehend   it   anymore…   it   just   happened,   automatically.

so   when   cassius   said   come   up–something   in   beau's   head   immediately   lit   up   with   recognition.   that   smirk   on   cassius'   face   was   one   beau   had   worn   himself   on   plenty   of   other   nights,   and   seen   mirrored   back   at   him   from   others   who   knew   exactly   what   they   were   offering.   an   invitation   extended.

which   was   unexpected.   beau   would   admit   that   much.   he   hadn't   built   this   scenario   into   his   read   of   how   tonight   was   going   to   end.   they'd   had   a   pretty   long   night   already–good   food,   better   company,   an   indulgent   evening   that   had   left   him   full   and   satisfied   in   the   simplest   sense.   he   assumed   cassius   would   get   out   of   the   car   outside   his   building,   a   wave,   a   see   you   later.   really,   he   had   been   prepared   to   watch   cassius   disappear   into   his   lobby   and   drive   home   himself,   the   night   successful   and   complete.

he   wasn't   going   to   pretend   he   wasn't   intrigued   by   the   alternative   now   sitting   in   front   of   him.

he   wasn't   going   to   pretend,   either,   that   cassius   didn't   check   every   box   beau   kept   for   the   kind   of   person   he   was   interested   in.   attractive,   obviously.   easy,   unforced   chemistry   that   had   already   proven   itself   earlier   tonight   in   a   club   booth.   quick-witted.   the   kind   of   man   who   could   keep   up   with   him   in   conversation   and,   beau   suspected,   in   other   ways   too.   it   didn’t   even   take   him   half   a   minute   to   decide   how   he   wanted   their   night   to   end.   if   cassius   wanted   the   same   thing—and   every   instinct   beau   had   honed   over   years   of   casual   encounters   told   him   he   did—then   beau   was   more   than   game.   sure,   there   was   that   teeniest,   tiniest   possibility   that   cassius   genuinely   just   meant come   up   for   a   drink,   that   beau’s   mind   had   veered   straight   into   the   gutter.   but   beau   had   never   been   one   to   second-guess   when   opportunity   knocked   this   clearly. 

there   was   a   chance   he   was   wrong.

beau   decided   the   chance   was   worth   taking   anyway.

he   killed   the   engine   and   unbuckled   his   seatbelt.   the   grin   that   spread   across   his   face   matched   cassius'   own,   unhidden   and   unbothered   by   the   fact   that   both   of   them   clearly   knew   what   kind   of   conversation   this   actually   was.

"sure,"   he   said.   "tama   ka   naman.   baka   mamaya   biglang   magtanong   mga   kaibigan   mo   sa'kin,   eh."   a   lousy   excuse,   flimsy   and   paper-thin.   neither   of   them   was   going   to   be   quizzed   on   interior   design   details   by   anyone,   and   they   both   knew   it.   but   sometimes   the   flimsiest   pretense   was   all   the   invitation   either   of   them   needed.   he   got   out   of   the   car,   following   cassius   up   to   his   home   with   the   grin   still   on   his   face.

   most   of   the   time,   junho   didn't   really   have   an   answer   to   things.   or,   more   accurately,   he   did   have   one—and   whatever   he   did   provide   was   stupid.   ask   him   something   serious,   and   somehow   the   conversation   would   end   up   on   a   meme   he   saw   on   tiktok.   his   thought   process   operated   on   a   frequency   that   even   he   struggled   to   tune   into   sometimes,   jumping   from   point   a   to   point   z   with   absolutely   no   regard   for   the   alphabets   in   between.   “eh—how   should   i   know?”   he   crossed   his   arms,   looking   genuinely   distressed.   "all   i   know   is   that   i   really,   really   have   to   pee   right   now."

                          which   can   only   mean   one   thing.

                          maybe   this   arrangement   isn’t   just   going   to   be   about   fake   dating.   maybe   they’re   both   expecting   something   more   out   of   it.   something   to   pass   the   time.   something   to   satisfy   the   loneliness   neither   of   them   has   admitted   out   loud.

                          see?   how   is   he   supposed   to   stop   thinking   about   that   makeout   session   earlier   when   beau   keeps   feeding   his   imagination   like   this?   his   stupid,   beautiful   mouth.   the   way   beau   devoured   it.   soft.   tender.   passionate.

                          cass   wants   to   do   it   again.   this   time   without   an   audience.   without   music   blasting   in   the   background.   without   pretending   it’s   only   part   of   the   act.   he   wants   to   know   what   beau   tastes   like   when   there   isn’t   a   crowd   watching   them.   wants   to   kiss   him   until   they’re   both   breathless,   until   the   only   thing   passing   between   them   isn’t   just   air   but   shared   breaths,   shared   saliva,   shared   desire.

                          his   eyes   wander   back   to   the   man   sitting   across   from   him.   this   stranger   looks   almost   unfair.   beautiful   enough   to   resemble   an   angel,   yet   dangerous   enough   to   make   someone   forget   every   sensible   thought   they’ve   ever   had.   the   kind   of   person   who   makes   you   feel   everything   all   at   once   while   reminding   you   that   you   were   never   meant   to   keep   him.   someone   capable   of   kissing   him   senseless   one   second   and   making   casual   conversation   the   next   as   if   neither   of   them   had   just   shared   something   that   intense.

                          and   somehow…   talking   to   beau   is   just   as   easy.   whether   they’re   discussing   something   deeply   personal   or   exchanging   shamelessly   suggestive   jokes,   the   conversation   never   feels   forced.   everything   comes   naturally.   like   they   understand   each   other   without   having   to   explain   much.

                          it’s   strange.

                          it   almost   feels   like   he   has   known   beau   his   entire   life.   except   he   hasn’t.   they’re   still   strangers   learning   each   other’s   favorite   colors   and   breakfast   orders.

                          cass   remembers   something   someone   once   told   him.   you   attract   who   you   are.   it   had   something   to   do   with   astrology.   karma.   the   universe   pulling   similar   souls   together.   cass   never   really   bought   into   any   of   it.   but   now…   he   wonders   if   there   might   be   some   truth   to   it.

                          maybe   the   people   you   surround   yourself   with.   the   people   you   happen   to   meet.   even   the   ones   who   appear   out   of   nowhere...   maybe   they’re   reflections   of   yourself.   different   versions   of   the   same   person.   magnets   drawn   together   because   they   recognize   something   familiar   in   each   other.   maybe   that’s   why   beau   feels   so   easy   to   be   around.   they’re   both   here   because   they’ve   stopped   chasing   commitment.   or   at   least…   that’s   what   beau   says.   cass   can’t   help   but   wonder   if   that’s   really   true.   deep   down,   does   beau   get   lonely   too?

                          does   he   ever   imagine   growing   old   beside   someone?   does   he   secretly   wish   there   was   one   person   waiting   for   him   at   the   end   of   every   day   instead   of   another   temporary   distraction?   does   he   also   get   tired   of   hookups,   of   one-night   stands,   of   pretending   he   doesn’t   want   something   permanent?

                          cass   will   probably   never   know.

                          their   arrangement   already   has   an   expiration   date.   by   the   time   he   figures   beau   out,   beau   will   most   likely   be   gone.

                          the   conversation   continues   while   they   wait   for   their   food,   and   somewhere   between   teasing   jokes   and   idle   chatter,   cass   learns   more   about   beau   than   he   expected   to   tonight.   his   family.   his   work.   the   things   that   irritate   him.   his   favorite   movies.   the   impact   his   grandfather   left   him.   it   would   be   a   pretty   dick   move   to   lie   about   something   like   that,   especially   when   there’s   no   reason   to.   they   aren’t   in   a   real   relationship.   there’s   nothing   to   gain   by   making   up   stories.   so   cass   believes   him.

                          in   return,   he   opens   up   too.   he   tells   beau   about   his   absent   father.   about   his   mother   remarrying   and   eventually   moving   abroad.   about   working   as   a   brand   strategist   with   well-known   brands   and   clients.   about   refusing   to   go   to   bed   without   doing   his   skincare   routine   first.   about   listening   to   jesse   barrera   whenever   he   wants   to   unwind.   about   trying   pilates   exactly   once   and   deciding   he’d   never   willingly   do   it   again.

                          their   food   arrives   in   the   middle   of   another   conversation.   cass   nods   when   beau   suggests   taking   photos.      “   wait.   ”      he   immediately   pulls   out   his   phone   and   points   the   camera   toward   him.      “   start   cutting   the   waffle.   ”      beau   does   exactly   that   while   cass   snaps   away.   the   first   few   photos   focus   on   beau’s   hand   slicing   through   the   waffle,   the   cozy   diner   lighting   making   everything   look   warmer   than   it   actually   is.

                          then   he   takes   another.   this   one   catches   beau’s   face.   cass   lowers   the   phone   just   enough   to   admire   the   shot.      “   pogi,   ”      he   mutters   under   his   breath.   he   isn’t   even   sure   if   beau   hears   him.   opening   instagram,   he   uploads   the   first   picture—   the   one   showing   beau’s   hand   and   the   waffle—   to   his   public   story   before   tagging   him.

                          then   he   switches   to   his   close   friends.   this   time,   he   chooses   the   photo   where   beau’s   face   is   fully   visible.

                          my   midnight   snack.   ♥️🥵   

                          he   grins   to   himself   after   posting   it   before   locking   his   phone   and   setting   it   on   the   table.      “   i   tagged   you   na,   ”      he   says   casually.      “   if   you   want   to   re-story   it,   it’s   fine.   ”      a   small   shrug   follows.      “   if   not,   okay   lang   din   naman.   ”

   maybe   that   was   another   reason   it   had   been   so   easy.   that   beau   had   decided,   practically,   to   lay   himself   out   on   the   table   like   a   folder   of   documents   for   cassius   to   peruse—and   that   cassius   had   done   the   same   thing   right   back,   had   matched   him   piece   for   piece.   beau   took   note   of   all   of   it,   filing   all   details   away.   the   things   cassius   chose   to   share.   the   serious   stuff,   then   the   small   stuff.   his   family.   the   fact   that   he   apparently   could   not   function   without   doing   his   skincare   routine   that   sounded,   from   the   way   cassius   described   it,   like   it   had   more   steps   than   beau's   entire   morning   combined. 

somewhere   in   the   accumulation   of   details,   a   portrait   was   assembling   itself,   one   beau   found   more   amusing   the   more   of   it   filled   in.   cassius   was   high-maintenance.   not   in   the   difficult   or   demanding   sense,   though.   cassius   was   just   dedicated   with   taking   care   of   himself.   really,   whatever   routine   kept   his   skin   looking   like   that,   kept   him   looking   put-together   even   at   one   in   the   morning   in   a   diner   after   a   full   night   out...   it   was   effective. 

gorgeous.   beau   had   already   thought   that   from   across   a   club   floor   and   the   diner   lighting   hadn't   done   anything   to   argue   him   out   of   it.   if   anything   the   plainer   light   made   it   more   obvious,   stripped   away   whatever   forgiveness   a   dance   floor's   dimness   offered   and   left   just   cassius,   still   very   fucking   attractive.   objectively   beau's   type.

he   reached   for   the   waffle.   it   was   enormous,   and   beau   picked   up   his   fork   and   knife,   cutting   it   into   smaller,   shareable   pieces.   he   heard   the   phone   before   he   saw   it.   the   faint   shutter   sound,   muted   but   not   muted   enough,   and   beau—didn't   look   up.   kept   his   eyes   on   the   waffle   andhis   hands   moving.   because   he   knew   cassius   was   taking   a   photo,   a   ‘stolen’   one.   honestly,   he   didn't   need   to   see   it   to   know   how   it   would   turn   out.   that   wasn't   arrogance,   exactly—or   maybe   it   was,   a   little,   but   it   was   earned   arrogance.   he   was   already   fairly   certain   the   photo   was   going   to   be   a   good   one.

the   notifications   came   in:   cassius   cho   tagged   you   in   his   story.

beau   swiped   it   open,   then   he   saw   it;   the   photo   of   beau   mid-motion   with   the   waffle,   unposed   and   unguarded,   and   underneath   it,   text:

my   midnight   snack.

beau   grinned.

he   was   cassius'   midnight   snack.

low-effort   humour   of   a   caption   anyone   would   write   when   posting   a   photo   of   the   person   they   were   supposedly   dating.   cheeky,   and   a   little   suggestive.   the   whole   point   was   to   be   a   little   playful,   a   little   pointed,   a   post   that   existed   less   for   the   person   in   the   photo   and   more   for   the   people   who'd   be   looking   at   it   later,   scrolling   through   their   phones   and   seeing   exactly   who   cassius   had   been   out   with   at   this   hour   and   exactly   how   not-single   he   was.   this   was   strategy.   cassius   making   sure   the   story   reached   the   group   chat,   to   the   friends   who   meddled   in   his   life.   cassius   practically   shut   all   of   that   down   without   him   having   to   say   another   word   about   it.

nothing   to   make   anything   of,   from   beau's   point   of   view.

except   something   in   beau's   chest   did   a   small,   involuntary   thing   anyway.   a   flicker   of   warmth—smugness,   maybe.   that   satisfaction   of   being   someone's   midnight   snack,   claimed   publicly   and   cheekily.

he   found   the   repost   option,   and   put   it   up   without   adding   anything   else.   no   caption   of   his   own,   or   any   other   addition.   just   cassius'   story   exactly   as   it   was,   passed   along   to   his   own   followers.   he   set   the   phone   down.

"i   reposted   it,"   he   said,   "para   mas   magmukhang   legit."

a   fake   relationship   required   corroborating   evidence   across   both   accounts,   and   beau   was   nothing   if   not   thorough   about   the   details   of   their   arrangement.

his   phone   buzzed.   then   buzzed   again,   a   small   cluster   of   notifications   stacking   up—probably   people   reacting   to   the   repost,   probably   a   few   messages   from   his   own   friends   who'd   want   an   explanation   eventually.   beau   glanced   at   the   screen   without   really   looking,   and   set   it   face-down,   unbothered.   that   could   wait.

the   food,   on   the   other   hand,   could   not.

he   was   hungrier   than   he'd   thought,   the   whole   night   finally   catching   up   with   him.   all   of   it   kind   of   drained   something   out   of   him   that   the   tapsilog   was   now   aggressively   replenishing.   he   ate   with   real   enthusiasm,   no   longer   distracted   by   phones   or   photos,   just   working   through   the   plate.   the   conversation   kept   going   between   bites,   lighter   now,   easier,   filling   in   whatever   gaps   were   left   in   the   earlier   information   dump,   and   beau   found   himself   laughing   more   than   once   at   something   cassius   said.   as   the   plates   emptied,   the   diner   around   them   also   thinned   out   further.   even   the   drunk   group   up   front   seemed   to   be   winding   down. 

he   raised   a   hand,   flagged   down   the   waiter,   making   the   small   gesture   that   universally   meant   bill,   please.   and   when   it   came,   beau   reached   for   it   before   cassius   did,   pulled   it   towards   himself.   which   was,   if   he   thought   about   it   for   half   a   second,   a   slightly   amusing   turn   of   events.   he   was   the   one   who'd   made   cassius   agree   to   cover   the   meals.   that   had   been   the   deal,   one   of   the   terms   he'd   set   himself.   but   he   was   the   one   settling   the   bill   without   a   second   though   now,   the   terms   he'd   written   for   himself   apparently   optional   the   moment   it   actually   came   time   to   enforce   them.

the   drive   back   into   the   city   proper   was   comfortably   quiet,   where   neither   of   them   felt   obligated   to   fill   the   car   with   more   conversation.   beau   mounted   his   phone   on   the   dash,   glancing   over   to   cassius   at   a   red   light.   “send   mo   sa   'kin   address   ng   condo   mo.”

                                        ❝          “   mahal   naman,   eh...   biro   lang   kasi   ’yon.   ”      tj   lets   out   a   soft   chuckle   as   he   continues   absentmindedly   combing   his   fingers   through   his   husband’s   hair.   after   a   while,   his   hand   drifts   lower,   tracing   gentle   paths   along   beau’s   arm,   his   fingertips   gliding   over   his   skin   in   slow,   soothing   strokes.   he   can’t   help   but   laugh   again   when   beau   only   snuggles   closer,   rubbing   his   face   against   tj’s   chest   as   if   trying   to   get   impossibly   closer.   the   room   falls   silent.   for   a   full   minute,   neither   of   them   says   anything.   tj   simply   watches   him.   then   their   eyes   meet.   this.   this   is   home.   a   small   smile   finds   its   way   onto   his   lips   as   he   brushes   a   thumb   across   beau’s   arm.      “   sabi   ko   naman   kasi   sa’yo,   mahal,   tulungan   na   kita   sa   shop.   ”      his   voice   is   gentle,   leaving   no   room   for   argument.      “   pahinga   ka   lang.   ako   na   bahala.   ”      he   leans   down   to   press   a   lingering   kiss   against   beau’s   forehead   before   resting   his   own   against   it.      “   aalagaan   kita.   ”

   beau   thought—no—he   knew   he   had   to   be   one   of   the   luckiest   people   in   the   world.   that   he'd   found   his   soulmate,   that   he   had   someone   who   made   every   difficult   day   feel   survivable,   someone   that   could   make   him   relax   in   a   snap.   really,   they   could   have   been   anywhere:   on   the   couch,   the   floor,   in   the   middle   of   an   airport,   and   it   wouldn't   have   mattered.   as   long   as   tj   was   there,   beau's   heart,   body,   and   soul   were   at   ease.   "...kung   kinaya   ng   lolo   ko   mag-isa,   kaya   ko   rin."   his   grandfather   had   built   the   shop   with   his   own   hands,   weathered   slow   seasons   and   impossible   ones,   opened   every   morning   before   the   sun   had   properly   risen   and   locked   the   doors   long   after   everyone   else   had   gone   home.   he'd   all   done   it   alone   until   beau   had   been   old   enough   to   help.   the   least   he   could   do   was   try   to   live   up   to   that.   slowly,   he   tipped   his   head   upward,   snuggling   higher   until   the   bridge   of   his   nose   brushed   against   the   warm   skin   at   the   crook   of   tj's   neck.   "...i   appreciate   the   offer,   mahal.   but   i   want   you   to   focus   on   your   career   din."

   "ihh..."   beau's   laugh   came   out   muffled   against   tj's   shirt.   "yan   ba   ang   gusto   ng   mahal   ko?   dede   ako   sa   'yo?"   he   exaggerated,   punctuating   his   words   by   burying   his   face   even   deeper   into   tj's   chest,   rubbing   his   cheek   against   him   before   cackling.   he   then   turned   his   head   just   enough   for   his   cheek   to   rest   flat   against   tj's   chest,   the   chuckles   gradually   tapering   off   into   a   quiet   sigh.   like   this…   he   could   hear   it.   the   rhythmic   thump   of   tj's   heart   beneath   his   ear.   he   closed   his   eyes,   "…sobrang   nakakapagod   ngayon,   mahal.   ang   daming   tourists.   ba't   hindi   nawawalan   ng   turista   dito?   ...not   that   i'm   complaining.   ang   hirap   lang   pag   day-off   ni   blair."

                          well...   sort   of.

                          being   in   a   relationship   is   a   lot   of   work   when   your   heart   and   mind   aren‘t   completely   in   it.   that‘s   probably   why   this   whole   arrangement   works   in   both   of   their   favor.   once   everything   is   over,   they   can   simply   walk   away   and   pretend   they   were   never   boyfriends   in   the   first   place.   no   messy   breakup.   no   begging   someone   to   stay.   no   convincing   the   other   to   give   the   relationship   a   real   chance.

                          sometimes,   even   looking   for   love   feels   like   too   much   work   in   cass’   perspective.

                          because   if   it   weren‘t,   he   wouldn‘t   have   found   himself   downloading   dating   apps   every   few   months,   matching   with   strangers,   rearranging   his   schedule   just   to   squeeze   in   a   date,   only   for   it   to   lead   absolutely   nowhere.   even   going   to   clubs   and   forcing   himself   to   strike   up   conversations   with   people   eventually   became   exhausting.

                          ten   years   ago,   though,   he   had   thought   love   worked   like   it   did   in   the   movies.   two   people   would   lock   eyes   across   a   crowded   room,   and   somehow,   they   would   just   know.   know   that   what   they   were   about   to   build   would   be   real.   that   it   would   last   for   years,   maybe   even   for   the   rest   of   their   lives.   passionate.   unwavering.   the   kind   of   love   people   wrote   songs   and   novels   about.   he   used   to   think   all   it   took   was   one   lingering   glance,   one   moment   where   the   rest   of   the   world   faded   into   the   background   until   everyone   else   became   nothing   but   blurred   faces   and   muffled   voices,   leaving   only   the   two   of   them   standing   there.

                          he   honestly   believed   that   was   how   it   happened.   unfortunately,   life   had   a   different   way   of   teaching   him.   after   years   of   failed   flings,   awkward   dates,   and   people   who   came   into   his   life   only   to   leave   just   as   quickly,   cass   learned   the   hard   way   that   real   life   isn‘t   nearly   as   romantic   as   the   movies   made   it   seem.   not   everyone   gets   a   grand   love   story.   not   everyone   finds   the   right   person   just   because   the   timing   feels   right.   some   people   simply...   don‘t.   maybe   he‘s   one   of   them.   

                          so   yes.   it   is   too   much   work.   it   is   tiring.   but   they   aren‘t   getting   any   younger   either.   at   some   point,   constantly   settling   for   one-night   stands   and   fuck   buddies   will   lose   whatever   excitement   they   once   had.   temporary   company   is   still   temporary,   no   matter   how   fun   it   is   in   the   moment.   eventually,   everyone   starts   looking   for   something   that   lasts.

                          unless,   of   course…   you‘re   a   cheater.

                          the   thought   earns   a   quiet   chuckle   from   him   before   he   lets   it   go.   still,   beau   is   technically   a   stranger.   sure,   cass   introduced   him   as   his   boyfriend   less   than   thirty   minutes   ago,   but   that   doesn‘t   suddenly   give   him   the   right   to   lecture   beau   about   love,   relationships,   or   what   he   should   want   out   of   life.   they‘re   only   meant   to   stay   in   each   other‘s   lives   for   a   month,   and   after   that,   they‘ll   probably   never   see   each   other   again.   so   instead   of   saying   any   of   that,   cass   simply   nods.      “   i   agree.   ”

                          he   leaves   it   at   that   before   lowering   his   gaze   back   to   the   menu   in   front   of   him.   despite   the   unexpectedly   deep   conversation,   he’s   still   starving.      “   longsilog   ‘yung   sa   ‘kin.   ”      a   mischievous   grin   slowly   spreads   across   his   face.      “   i   like   it   long   kasi—   ”      he   pauses   just   long   enough   before   laughing   at   himself.      “   joke   lang.   ”      shaking   his   head,   he   continues   more   seriously.      “   but   yeah,   mine‘s   longsilog.   tapos   coffee   na   rin.   ”      his   eyes   wander   across   the   menu   one   last   time   before   stopping   on   another   item.      “   hmm...   i   think   their   waffles   are   a   pretty   big   serving.   ”      he   glances   back   up   at   beau.      “   gusto   mong   mag-share?   ”

                          once   beau   gives   him   an   answer,   cass   closes   the   menu   and   catches   the   attention   of   a   nearby   waiter.   after   placing   both   of   their   orders   and   waiting   for   the   server   to   leave,   the   conversation   naturally   starts   up   again.

                          this   time,   the   questions   are   much   simpler.   family.   favorite   color.   favorite   song.   dream   travel   destination.   the   kind   of   things   two   people   who   are   pretending   to   date   probably   should‘ve   known   about   each   other   before   introducing   themselves   as   boyfriends   to   an   entire   friend   group.

   cassius   was   incredibly   easy   to   talk   to.   it   was   company   that   didn't   require   effort   to   be   in.   they'd   been   talking   for—however   long   it   had   been   since   they'd   slid   into   this   booth,   and   beau   couldn't   identify   a   single   moment   where   the   air   had   gone   awkward.   the   conversation   just…   went.   one   thing   to   the   next.   which   was   not   nothing.   beau   had   sat   across   from   enough   people   to   know   that   this   specific   quality   wasn't   universal   nor   guaranteed.   it   couldn't   be   forced   through   goodwill   alone.   either   it   was   there   or   it   wasn't,   and   with   cassius   it   was   there   from   the   first   genuinely   bizarre   conversation   in   the   club   that   should   have   been   awkward   and   somehow   wasn't.   and   it   had   stayed   through   the   elevator   pitch   of   their   arrangement   and   the   drive   and   the   ordering   and   this…   whole   improbable   evening.

cassius   was   the   kind   of   person   beau   could   imagine—in   another   world   where   they'd   met   in   a   different   way—being   someone   he   actually   kept   around.   a   friend,   maybe.   they   seemed   to   move   through   the   world   similarly,   or   at   least   it   felt   that   way   from   the   surface   of   one   long   midnight   conversation.

the   love   thing   especially.   they   had   the   shared   outlook   in   regard   to   that;   the   lack   of   active   pursuit,   and   that   both   of   them   had   made   their   peace   with   it.   because…   well.   this   was   real   life.   it   was   not   a   film.   not   a   fantasy   world   where   people's   intentions   were   clean   and   their   hearts   were   simple   and   love   stories   always   had   happy   endings.   real   life,   where   beau   had   met   enough   people   to   know   that   most   of   them   were   complicated,   selfish,   and   greedy,   was   the   furthest   from   that. 

to   be   fair,   him   and   cassius   did   not   know   each   other   yet   well   enough   for   beau   to   judge   him   accurately.   if   he   would   even   be   able   to   know   cassius   to   that   extent.   though,   setting   all   of   that   aside,   this   was   a   fake   relationship.   the   terms   had   been   stated,   understood,   and   agreed   to.   there   was   no   ambiguity   here   to   get   lost   in.   there   was   no   chance   for   a   moment   where   one   person   thought   they   were   doing   one   thing   and   the   other   person   thought   they   were   doing   something   else.   and   within   those   terms   beau   knew   exactly   what   he   should   be:   the   perfect   boyfriend   for   a   month.   attentive,   present,   made   cassius   look   well-loved   in   public,   showed   up   beside   him   at   parties   and   held   his   hand   and   touched   his   hair. 

gosh.   this   felt   like   a   trial   run,   almost.   an   experiment   in   what   it   would   feel   like   to   do   this   properly,   with   someone   whose   company   beau   actually   wanted.   the   feelings   wouldn't   be   there…   but   the   shape   of   it   could   be.   the   form   of   a   relationship   without   the   commitment   of   one.   beau   could   do   that.   was,   if   anything,   perhaps   the   ideal   candidate   for   exactly   that.

beau's   eyes   shot   up   at   the   innuendo‚   which   had   sounded   very   intentional,   and…   yes.   it   really   was   intentional.   the   proof   was   right   there   on   cassius'   face:   the   playful   smirk   sitting   at   the   corner   of   his   mouth.

"long   lang?   ayaw   mo   ng   mahaba   tapos   mataba   rin?"   beau   asked,   grinning   wide   and   shameless.   "mas   nakakabusog   'yon."

suddenly,   his   mind   went   somewhere   else.   went   back,   specifically,   to   the   feeling   of   cassius   against   him   and   the   memory   of   their   kiss,   which   had   not,   it   turned   out,   diminished   in   quality   upon   reflection.   if   anything   it   had   made   it   worse,   he   couldn’t   stop   thinking   about   how   cassius   had   kissed   him   back.   he   could   still   taste   cassius   on   his   mouth,   hear   the   little   hitch   of   his   breath   when   he   had   pulled   away.   he   then   wondered,   briefly,   if   they'd   do   that   again.

"uh…   ha?"   beau   blinked,   returning   to   reality.   "ah,   waffles?"   he   said,   "sige.   hati   tayo.   pwede   mo   rin   i-post   sa   instagram   na   nagsha-share   tayo   ng   pagkain." 

once   the   waiter   left,   beau   slouched   back   against   the   booth.   he   wasn't   normally   someone   who   laid   it   all   out.   not   on   a   first   date,   not   on   a   fifth,   not   really   ever.   but   this   wasn't   normal,   was   the   thing.   this   was   a   fake   relationship   that   needed   to   hold   up   under   interrogation   from   people   who   might   be   actively   looking   for   inconsistencies,   which   meant   beau   actually   had   a   practical   reason   to   say   the   things   he   usually   didn't   say.

so   he   talked.   about   his   family,   about   his   parents,   about   his   grandfather.   he   talked   about   his   job,   the   hours   it   took.   he   talked   about   what   he   did   when   the   week   finally   finished.   what   he   listened   to,   what   he   ordered   when   he   needed   comfort   food,   what   he   couldn't   stand,   what   he'd   watched   three   times   and   would   watch   again   without   being   asked.

he   didn't   even   notice   the   food   arrive   until   the   waiter   had   set   down   their   food—as   well   as   the   waffles,   which   were,   as   advertised,   huge   enough   to   justify   the   sharing.
