People genuinely doublethink and doublespeak all the time and somehow read 1984 and say “if I was there I’d know the government is bad.” I think this is a great example of the theory that people tend to assume real life will never be bad, ever. We always assume that our life, no matter how horrible it is, is not the worst it can get. While yes, obviously it all could be worse, I think it’s important for us to notice when it begins to get worse rather than insisting “but it could be EVEN WORSE.” This just leads to an infinite amount of shit you allow yourself to go through.

I read Orwell’s 1984 very recently, and the entire time I was realizing how similar American society is to this book. I’m writing an essay on it, actually. I’m a senior in high school so it won’t be perfect, especially since it’s being written within a week, but I think I’ll be posting it on here somewhere once it’s done. We are living in a genuinely dystopian society right now, and everyone can only say “it could be worse.”
