Are You Afraid of the Dark was essential viewing for any spooky kid in the 90s. The show centered around The Midnight Society, a collection of kids who meet in the woods at night in secret to swap scary stories. Although easily compared to Goosebumps, of the two shows I have really think that Are You Afraid of the Dark has aged much better.

There were some truly terrifying visuals and stories in this show that were impressive for a kid’s show on Nickelodeon. The story that stayed with me most was The Tale of the Silent Servant, in which a scarecrow comes to life in a kind of Sorcerer’s Apprentice gone terrifying situation. Although, as far as memorable images are concerned, I’m sure everyone has terrifying memories of the Ghastly Grinner.
