You have been added to the BAU as JJ takes her place as a field agent. Whilst you had, at first, been unsure of the role, you accept it. JJ helps, of course, keeping you steady as you find your feet. You know, deep down, that despite your fear, you are braver than you think. So you dig deep, take the position and find a way to make it feel easier for yourself. Emily Prentiss, of course, welcomes you warmly. Helps you as much as she can when it comes to preparing the presentations you make to the media, seeming to trust you even when you struggle. JJ surprises you, in the end, steps up to work alongside you and keep you steady when things get trickier. Although you never say it out loud, JJ seems to know just how much you distrusted Hotch, how much you remember losing Elle. A friend and someone you cared for. You find comfort in rooming with JJ, of course. The two of you settle beside one another on instinct in the end. Emily seeming to know what is coming before you do. You sleep easier with JJ in your arms, even when nightmares and PTSD try to sneak up on both of you.

You have known Karen long enough to know what her mother believes. What your aunt believes. So, when Karen goes into the Myers house without telling her family, you follow, stepping between Michael and Karen just early enough to catch the knife in your collarbone, barely reacting even as you stare up at Micheal. “Stop.” He tilts his head, making to pull the knife out until you stop him, holding it in place and looking at him. Your voice is steady. “She’s not the one to blame Michael.” He glares and you stare back, your voice steady, calm and easy. “Leave her alone.” He turns to go and you turn your focus to Karen, trembling and curled into herself, your voice soft. “It’s okay Karen.” She looks up, then, without a word, points over your shoulder. You turn to see Michael watching you, then shrug and turn back, scooping Karen up and walking past him, your voice steady. “Come on then, I guess she’s ours now.”

Erin Reagan doesn’t like to answer it. The question. The same question you ask now. The same question you know that you have to ask. “So, officially divorced?” “Yeah.” It's been a year. You stay quiet, thinking, then you finally ask the question that you know is burning deepest between you. You know she knows how you feel about her, about the family. The Reagans, the one family who don’t act like you were somehow broken by what happened to you when you were in the academy. “Ever considered marrying again?” “Who?” She knows, you can tell from the way she asks the question. “Me.” You answer her honestly. Finally asking the question you really want the answer to. “Would you ever consider marrying me?” She half-smiles, all the answer you need. “Ask me properly.” It's a challenge. One that you take willingly. “Erin Reagan, will you marry me?” “Yes.” You face the family dinner the next night, unflinching even when the rest of the family question it, question you. It’s light, easy, and you smile as you answer. You have no plans to give in, even when you know you should probably be a little nervous about joining the family this way.  Erin’s daughter asks the final question, one that makes you smile instantly. “So, you really aren’t afraid of us? Mom and me? Even with dad’s mess?” “Not at all. I know you Nicky, I know how smart you are. I know I love your mother. Nothing is going to change that.” “Well then, welcome to the family.”

Danny’s smirk is clear and you find you laugh at it. “Thanks Reagan.” He’s been close to you for years, even when you fought tooth and nail to keep Jackie Curatola as part of the team, part of the family. “Just don’t forget to tell Jackie, okay? She’ll be delighted.” Danny’s smirk is clear and you laugh at him again. “Still scared of her, huh Danny boy.” “Nah, just don’t really want to get in between the two of you.” You roll your eyes and glance at Erin with a small smile. “She’ll be fine Dan, she’s used to it.”

You are the one to find her first. You are the one by her side when the Fisher King tries to write his message in her blood. You are the one to kill him, your fingers still coated with Elle’s blood as you pull the trigger. The team find you at the hospital, of course. Whilst the others are chasing the Fisher King’s family, you are there. By her side, waiting. She wakes to you alone, the team having been called away. You take her home with you, fight both Hotch and Strauss, fight for her place in the BAU. When she walks away, you do too, going with her. The FBI wants you both gone but you don’t leave, not completely. You take her with you to the team lead by Clara Seger, you know she would, or could, settle in with the Children Cases team, but you know, deep down that this, being in the field, using her skills the way she should have been able to with the BAU, is the better option. Clara, who despite it all trusts you to keep Elle steady, welcomes her easily. You hear later that the BAU has taken on one of Clara’s other friends, a woman known to so many as just ‘Prentiss’ or ‘The Princess’, you meet her when Spencer is in jail in Mexico, of course, understanding instantly why Clara had said you would like her, understanding too that Elle, despite being replaced by the woman, likes her too. The three of you work with Emily to prove Spencer’s innocence. When the team is disbanded by the woman who replaces Strauss, you turn to the one place you can go. To Strauss, who despite people thinking she is dead, isn’t. Strauss welcomes you both, welcomes Clara too and you find that working with her, finally, feels like home.

You know why Amanda is in trouble with John before she does, but you are sneakier than John ever expected, finding many ways to poison his already frail body. You will never tell her, she’d never forgive you, but as you are John’s sister, you find you don’t care as much as you should about him dying. You pretend to, of course, for authenticity, but you can feel Amanda watching as you clean out his office and belongings, moving into his position like it was always going to be you. You first touch her after a trap, one she’s rigged unfairly. You don’t care, not really, not when she smiles at you like you mean everything.

She runs again but you catch her easily, dragging her away despite her deafening screams. It’s here that her new life begins. You stay silent, of course, watching her tremble with appreciative eyes. She’s beautiful, of course, Chelsea always is, but here, like this, she’s perfect.  She won’t understand for a while, you expected that, but you won’t let her go. Not now she’s finally yours to keep. She will learn to adapt, in time. You believe that. You leave her alone for days, weeks, then months, coming back when she’s finally stopped flinching at the mere look in your eyes. It’s wrong, you know it is, but you don’t care.

You follow, you wait and when Michael thinks he has her cornered, you attack, shooting him several times until he falls, snatching the knife away from him to bury it into his heart, more than once. By the time he’s dead you are coated in blood, his blood and a little of your own where he had almost caught you before. By the time he is dead Karen is silent, shaking and sobbing. You rise only when you are sure it’s over, moving to gather her close as you leave. She won’t let go of your hand and you stay close, even when her mother comes closer. The two of you move on slowly, you guard her even when the woman is struggling. You stay, even when it’s over, even when you could leave. Destiny has chosen you to pick up the pieces and you know you won’t ever leave Karen again.

It's clear she’s surprised, but the two of you fall into an easy rhythm, her natural instincts match yours. You find the attacker in moments, even when he thinks he’s won. Even when he thinks he has Borin pinned. You don’t turn away, not even for a second. By the time you hand him off to the others, you know without a doubt that something far more than just professional respect is pulling you to settle into routine with Borin, settle into more than just work. He knew it would come back to me.” Connie pauses, then her voice drops. “It was you?” “It was.” You speak with a flat tone. “You remember?” Your eyes narrow slightly as you look at Connie. “First week out of the academy.” “You said you and Olivet had history but…” “She was telling the truth.” Elizabeth’s voice is soft as she enters the office, moving to slip a hand into yours without question, squeezing slightly. “I’m sorry.” “Doesn’t matter, I got fired anyway.” You finally meet Connie’s eyes. “Disgracing an ADA, apparently worse than nearly being killed on duty.” You pause then look at Connie again. “McCoy has a lot to answer for… See you tonight.” You leave with Elizabeth, not bothering to look back. You had known when Elizabeth chose to speak for the defence that this might happen. Your voice drops as you settle beside her in the car. “I don’t blame you Liz… You did the right thing.” It's only later that you face Connie again, your hand reaching for her, a small smile coming to you. “So…. You finally told Jack off?” “Twice over.” Connie agrees, settling into your side even as Elizabeth curls into your other side, the three of you finally moving past the case, finding your peace.

You aren’t supposed to like her. Gibbs made that much clear early on, but then you have never really followed his rules. You follow your own. Which means when Hollis walks into a trap, you are close by. You emerge from the bushes only when she’s safe, barely saluting Gibbs before turning your attention to Hollis, checking in just briefly. Whilst you know NCIS won’t be fond of your actions, you also don’t much mind it. After so long studying crime scenes, you know enough to trust your instincts. You come back to work with Hollis, taking the cue to talk to the director only when you have to. Despite everything you know that the director trusts you, even when you ‘go rogue’. You accept the assignment to work side by side with Hollis, the NCIS agent working with the Army, under Mann. What many people don’t expect is for you to find it easier working there, despite the two of you seeming like polar opposites. It comes out slowly, you stay calm, quietly confident in your steps. You know, deep down, that this isn’t exactly easy, you disclosed early, of course, aware you can’t or shouldn’t work cases if Connie is second chair, the link wouldn’t look good, but you still work quietly on other cases, until it’s clear who is taking the case. By the time it becomes clear Connie is considering walking away you have already left the department, taking a job working alongside others in the Major Case Squad, allowing your connection to cause less trouble. Still, as she leaves, you know you can ask to go ‘home’, to the other department, you choose not to, settled in well enough that the cases you catch rarely overlap with anyone else, unless with the SVU. By the time you quit, choosing to walk away after losing two close friends in the department, you come home to Connie working quietly on her new job, sinking into the sofa beside her with an exhausted sigh, glad for her quiet smile and offer of a glass of wine. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s always been worth it.
