This is a bit of a larger spread that I made for my birthday, but can be used for the new year as well! I typically like to do this on my birthday because it is a more personal way of counting years! Anyways, I really love the result I got, Honest, but what I needed to know! Looking forward to next year’s new adventures!
Hi Bree, do you know of any good books for herbology and folklore? I want to expand upon my knowledge of herbs and plants. Thank you in advance!
Folklore would largely depend on what region you’d want to focus on, but I do have a number of recommendations for books on plants and herbology.
Here are my usual recs for plant magic books:
GREEN WITCHCRAFT
Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Cunningham)
Garden Witchery (Dugan)
The Garden Witch’s Herbal (Dugan)
The Sacred Herbs of Samhain (Hopman)
The Real Witches’ Garden (West)
The Hearth Witch’s Compendium (Franklin)
The Hearth Witch’s Kitchen Herbal (Franklin)
The Green Witch Herbal (Griggs)
PRACTICAL HERBOLOGY
The Complete Guide to Herbal Medicines (Fetrow & Avila)
Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs (Carr)
Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs (Peterson Field Guides)
Edible Wild Plants (Peterson Field Guides)
Herbal Remedies (Chevallier)
The New American Herbal (Orr)
The Herbal Medicine-Maker’s Handbook (Green)
HISTORY OF PLANT MAGIC AND MEDICINE
Witchcraft Medicine: Healing Arts, Shamanic Practices, and Forbidden Plants (Rätsch, Müller-Ebeling, and Storl)
The Untold History of Healing: Plant Lore and Medicinal Magic from the Stone Age to Present (Storl)
Folklore and Symbolism of Flowers, Plants, and Trees (Lehner)
Culpeper’s Complete Herbal & English Physician (Culpeper)
It looks like a lot, I know. Options are good to have, and it's also important to have practical sources on your shelves in addition to your magical books. I also posted some pictures of my personal library a while back. They're a little out of date, but you can see the titles pretty clearly, and that might give you some more ideas. If you're looking for books on working with plant spirits, I suggest looking into sources on druidry. (I'm just getting into that myself.) Dana O'Driscoll's Wordpress blog is a wealth of information on the topic.
I hope this helps! Remember as you're building your library that it's okay to keep what serves you and pass on the books that you don't find helpful or appealing. I've been revising my own collection for years now and it's gone through significant changes during that time.
I’m going to be talking about how to find good sources and build your witchcraft library in a future episode of Hex Positive as well. :)
For the recipe thing, could you make a meat pie, please? Thanks for all of your hard work!
Sure thing love! Here you go!
COTTAGE CORE MEAT PIE
2 lb beef of choice (minced or chunk)
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp ground sage
Salt and pepper
1 tsp thyme
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/3 cup flour
2 cups beef stock
1 yellow onion, chopped
1/2 pack bacon
4 tbsp cheddar cheese
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1/3 cup chopped celery
2 sheets puff pastry
Directions
Pour some oil into a pot of choice and cook your garlic and onion until fragrant. Now cook down the onions, celery, and carrots until the onions are soft. Cook your bacon in the same pot. Add in minced beef in a pot (if you use chunk, it will take longer to cook). Add in your tomato paste, salt, pepper, sage, and thyme. When the beef is about 3/4 way cooked, add in your stock.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, cheddar cheese, and flour. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 75 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. Stir in red wine vinegar.
Preheat your oven to 350 F. Roll out your puff pastry if needed and cut out a heart shape in the center of one sheet. In a buttered baking pan of choice, add a sheet of puff pastry to it. Pour your simmered meat into the baking dish and cover with the puff pastry you cut out hearts with. Make a couple other slits and brush with egg wash.
Bake for 30 – 35 minutes or until the pastry reaches a deep golden color. Enjoy!
Lavender Lemonade
Nothing beats the summer heat like a tall glass of ice cold Lavender Lemonade! Not only will you love the refreshingly delicious taste it has to offer, but you may find yourself more relaxed since the mere scent of lavender has been shown to reduce anxiety. In addition, the odor from essential oils that are released from lavender blossoms may provide migraine and insomnia relief.

strawberry summer tea
- 🌿🕊🍓☀️🍵✨
hello! i’d like to start off this post by saying it was totally inspired by another post for a really yummy strawberry jam, everyone should go check it out!
so, i somehow managed to pull off another tea recipe that tastes good both iced and hot, which if you’ve been here for a while you know that i! do not! take that claim lightly! as i find it’s usually a complete and total sham!!!! but i digress, this summer tea is amazing to enjoy out in the beautiful sunshine this summer and i especially recommend it on one of those days where the sky is extra baby blue and there’s not a single cloud in sight ✨
[ what you’ll need; ]
strawberries;
happiness, friendship, love, purity, healing, growth, good luck, energy, emotional balance
thyme;
healing, communication, love, happiness, prosperity, abundance, friendship, cleansing, growth, stability, comfort
cinnamon;
energy, confidence, protection, growth, grounding, love, happiness, comfort, mental strength
honey; [optional]
healing, love, vitality, communication, motivation, energy, confidence, protection, intuition, good luck, prosperity, abundance, wish granting
-
[ brew instruction ]
mash up your strawberries and honey together into a jammy paste while you get some water boiling, go ahead and throw in your cinnamon stick(s) at this point
once your water is aggressively boiling, bring it to med-low heat and sprinkle in your thyme while still at a high boil, let it bubble down then bring your heat all the way down to a gentle simmer and add in your jammy mixture, let it brew like this for maybe 3-5 minutes and enjoy hot or refrigerate and serve over ice!
☆ Beltane Lemonade ☆
Even though Beltane has already passed, this lemonade recipe can and should be enjoyed whenever you care for a refreshing drink.
Ingredients: ☆ Ginger (Money, Power, Success) ☆ Lemons (Friendship, Longevity, Purification) ☆ Lemon Balm (Healing, Love, Success) ☆ Rosemary (Healing, Mental Powers, Protection) ☆ Spearmint (Healing, Love, Mental Powers)
*Note: Fresh squeezed lemons for the lemonade is best but if you cannot, don’t worry. Adding the ingredients to store bought lemonade and letting them sit in the fridge for a couple of hours works all the same. Remember, it’s all about intention.
so today I made this syrup which is basically just concentrated rose lemonade, you mix it with water and boom you got some rose lemonade :) ROSE LEMONADE SYRUP Ingredients: 2 cup lemon juice (I did 1.5 cups lemon juice and the rest lime juice bc I ran out) 1.5 cup sugar ½ cup dried edible roses (or rose petals, I just found full dried roses at my local Asian market) rose water to taste (optional if rose flavor isn’t strong enough) Instructions: Mix ingredients together in a medium saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes. Allow to cool to room temperature (takes about an hour). Strain out roses and put syrup in a container and refrigerate for future use. To make the lemonade, mix 3-5 tbsp. syrup with 8oz cold water, pour over ice, and enjoy :)

🍻🍀Prosperity Jar🍀🍻
What you’ll need -
📈A jar (I used a baby food jar)
👑Jewlery (I used earrings that had no pair!)
🍀Dried Basil
🍀Dried Mint
💛Gold or Silver Glitter
💲Coins (Gold coins, pennies etc.)
💚A Green or Gold Candle
Optional: Four leaf clovers or anything else ’lucky’! 🍀. I added a citrine crystal since it’s known as the merchants stone.
Put everything in your spell jar, envisioning what you want as you do so. A chest of gold coins, money falling, beautiful jewelry, or maybe just your dream house. Anything that makes you think of the intent of money, luck and prosperity!
Once everythings in the jar, place your candle on top and light it (Or if it’s in a jar or tin, just pour the wax over the lid to seal it) As you see the wax drip down on to the jar say -
“Let my fortune grow. Let my luck flow.Bring me prosperity. Make it so.”
Recite this as many times as you wish while envisioning your future prospers. I wrote mine down and placed it inside the jar.
Either let the candle melt all the way down over the jar OR blow it out once the top is sealed (If you dripped the wax instead then just blow it out when covered)
Keep in a safe place or keep it near you whenever you need some luck, money or prosperity in your life.
💛💸🍀GOOD LUCK!🏆📈💚
Hullo everyone! 🌙
Here is an illustrated set of instructions I made on how to make a Positivity Spell Jar for my illustration class this past quarter.
What you’ll need:
A Jar
Lighter
Salt- for protection
Glitter-for fun
Candle- light and let melt around edges of jar to Cast Spell
Rosemary- for mental strength
Lavender- to keep calm
Citrine- for abundance
Rose Quartz- for love
Blue Thread- for harmony
—–
As you set each item into the jar focus on what they represent to you. Your magick and energy melding with each, coming from inside you and around you. Close off the jar and wrap the thread round the top of the jar. Light the candle, visualizing the flame as the energy casting the spell.
This can be modified to make absolutely any type of spell jar. Use different ingredients and colors to symbolize different things.
Enjoy!

🌿🍊Litha Orange Honey Cake🍊🌿
Hello my greenies! Happy Litha! I hope you’re all enjoying the summer sun and nature. Even during quarantine, if you’re able to take a walk in nature without contact with others, I highly recommend doing so. If you’re unable to go outside, I recommend taking the time to bake and maybe listen to some nature sounds on youtube. Those have helped me during these times. I wish you all the best with this yummy cake! I hope you all like this recipe:)
Ingredients
2 cups all purpose flour
½ cup softened unsalted butter
2 eggs
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup milk
½ tsp salt
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tbsp fresh orange juice
2/3 cup honey
1 tbsp vanilla extract
around a tbsp of orange zest
Optional Glaze
½ cup honey
¼ cup brown sugar
some lemon juice
juice of 4th of orange
couple pats of ground cinnamon
dash of vanilla
½ cup (maybe.. I never measure this out)sliced almonds
Mix until syrup state.
Directions
Preheat Oven for 350°F and coat pan with non-stick or other alternative. I honestly don’t know what size my pan is…so I’d say eyeball it and see how much you can fit? Lol
In medium bowl, mix dry ingredients (including the orange zest). Set that to the side while you mix the other ingredients in a larger bowl.
Sift the dry ingredients into the bowl with the other ingredients in batches. So, sift a little in and mix then repeat that until all the dry ingredients are mixed in.
Pour the mixture into the pan and cook for about 28 to 35 minutes. Check with a long toothpick:3 After you take out you can pour over an optional syrup that I think is amazing!
There’s no particular chant I do for this recipe, I mostly just pray for the sun and for the health of those I care for. I like to visualize the sun and its heat and color wrapping me in an embrace and that same warmth infusing the cake.
I hope you call have a lovely Litha and special time with those you love a care for.

Lemon Syrup
Lemons- happiness, vitality, friendship, rejuvenation, clarity, cleansing, healing, protection, solar energy.
Sugar- sweetness in life, happiness, attraction.
You'll need enough lemons to make 1/2 cup of squeezed lemon juice. For me, that was 3 lemons.
Before juicing them, separate the zest (the bright yellow part of the peel, not the white pith underneath, which will make your syrup bitter).
Then juice the lemons, and add to a pot with 3/4 to 1 cup of white sugar.
Let it boil, and once it does, reduce the boil to a simmer for 10 minutes. If you think the syrup is not thick enough, add more sugar.
Add the zest and turn off the heat entirely. Once it has cooled, strain it to remove all the zest and any pulp. Don't leave the zest in the syrup, even if it looks aesthetically appealing, because it'll turn bitter.
Keep it covered and chilled and it can keep up to a year. You can add it to teas, cocktails, use it for lemonade, drizzle it on pastries, etc.
