Quinn ❤️: Landing now. I’ll be home in about thirty minutes. Stay awake?
He smiled to himself, expecting the three little dots to appear almost immediately. They always FaceTimed before bed whenever he was on the road, and if he was coming home late, she always tried to stay awake until he got there.
He frowned slightly, checking to make sure the message had delivered. It had.
“Probably asleep already,” he muttered as he slid into the back of the team bus.
A few hours earlier, Y/N had been discharged from the hospital.
The doctors had diagnosed her with a mild concussion, bruised ribs, a sprained wrist, and several stitches just above her eyebrow after she had been hit by a car in a grocery store parking lot. She had tried arguing that she was fine, but after a few hours of observation they finally agreed to let her leave with pages of discharge instructions.
“Do you have someone who can drive you home?” the nurse had asked.
“My boyfriend’s out of town.”
She thought about it for a moment before shaking her head. Everyone she could think of was working or out of town themselves.
The nurse didn’t look convinced.
“We really recommend that someone else takes you.”
After another reminder to rest and return if her symptoms worsened, the nurse reluctantly let her go.
The drive home felt much longer than usual.
Every bump in the road made her ribs ache, and by the time she pulled into the apartment parking garage, she was completely drained.
Jo trotted faithfully beside her as she slowly made her way upstairs.
Once inside, she locked the door, dropped her keys onto the entry table, and carefully lowered herself onto the couch with a quiet wince. Jo immediately jumped up beside her, resting her head against Y/N’s leg as if she knew something was wrong.
“I’m okay,” Y/N whispered, scratching behind her ears.
Jo only let out a soft whine.
About forty minutes later, Quinn quietly unlocked the apartment door.
He smiled when he noticed the lights were still on.
“Baby?” he called as he stepped inside.
He slipped off his shoes and walked farther into the apartment.
His smile slowly disappeared.
As he rounded the corner into the living room, he froze.
Y/N was asleep on the couch beneath one of their blankets. An ice pack rested across her ribs. Her left wrist was wrapped in a brace, and a white bandage covered the area just above her eyebrow.
For a second, Quinn genuinely thought he was seeing things.
Jo lifted her head at the sound of his voice and quietly padded over to him before looking back toward Y/N.
Quinn hurried across the room and knelt beside the couch.
He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
Her eyes slowly fluttered open.
“I’m home,” he said softly, unable to take his eyes off the bandage on her forehead. “What happened?”
She blinked a few times, still waking up.
The realization hit her immediately.
“You weren’t going to tell me?”
She started to sit up but immediately sucked in a sharp breath as pain shot through her ribs.
Quinn gently rested a hand on her shoulder.
He helped her settle back against the cushions before asking again, much more quietly this time.
She stared down at the blanket covering her lap.
Quinn felt every muscle in his body tense.
“It wasn’t going very fast,” she said quickly. “It happened in the grocery store parking lot.”
“I was taken to the hospital.”
Quinn ran a hand through his hair, trying to process what she was telling him.
“I forgot to add you as my emergency contact.”
There was a long silence.
“My sister’s still listed,” she admitted quietly. “My mom too… and I think my old manager.”
“We’ve been together for almost four years.”
“And I’m not your emergency contact?”
She looked completely miserable.
He could tell immediately that she wasn’t making excuses.
She genuinely had forgotten.
Still, hearing it hurt more than he expected.
He let out a slow breath and rubbed the back of his neck.
Her expression immediately softened.
“I was on a plane thinking you were home relaxing.”
She had spent hours in the emergency room.
Quinn stared at her in disbelief.
“You drove yourself home?”
“I just wanted to get home.”
“And you drove yourself home anyway?”
“There wasn’t really anyone else.”
“You could’ve called me.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“I would’ve figured something out.”
She reached over and gently took his hand.
“I didn’t want you worrying when there wasn’t anything you could do.”
He squeezed her hand tightly.
“I would’ve rather worried than walked into this without knowing.”
Neither of them spoke for a long moment.
Jo climbed onto the couch between them, pressing herself against Y/N before nudging Quinn’s arm.
Despite everything, Quinn let out a quiet laugh.
“I think she’s making sure I don’t leave your side.”
“I think so too,” Y/N said with a tired smile.
Quinn carefully shifted onto the couch beside her, making sure not to bump her injured ribs before wrapping an arm gently around her shoulders.
He kissed the top of her head, careful to avoid the stitches.
“Tomorrow morning,” he said softly, “the first thing we’re doing is updating your emergency contacts.”
“No,” he corrected with a faint smile. “Actually… we’re doing it tonight.”
She laughed quietly for the first time all day.
“Maybe,” he admitted as he held her a little closer. “But if anything like this ever happens again…”
He looked down at their intertwined hands.
“I want to be the first person they call.”
Quinn nodded, finally allowing himself to breathe now that she was home, safe in his arms.
“There better never be a next time,” he murmured.
“There won’t be,” she whispered.
He kissed her forehead one more time, careful to avoid the bandage.
