“Later than I wanted to but yes, thankfully. I was worried that I’d be kept in Argentina but my parents found a way.” A way that required a nurse to stay with her in her apartment. Fortunately for Arabella, she has a close relationship with one of her family’s nurses so she was happy to stay with her in Tokyo while she recovers. “Just a few days ago, settling in has not been easy. Please tell me it was for you.”

“ 𝐍𝐎 ? well hey, anything i can help you out with bella, i’m sitting around waiting for a few things. ” he shrugged. “ i’ve got nothing but time to help you out. ” things he wasn’t all to happy about in the first place so the distraction was more than needed. selfish really. “ it was , anti-climatic. stubbed my toe on a box and got a bad view. ” still was better than argentina though.

𝐀𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓, it had been easy. just allow slovenia’s neighboring countries to deal with their own circumstances, as long as it didn’t cross the boarder, the fragile state of slovenia’s presence as a monarchy wouldn’t have to be shaken. but then it became personal. lovrenc had actively severed relationships while allowing slovenia to be complacent. ‘ and if i don’t say something soon we’re a monarchy without a backbone ’ lovrenc thought. his hands were firmly clasped together, the knuckles of his index fingers pressed against his lips. “  𝐙𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐆𝐀,  ” he muttered under his breath as he waited, waited to see if the ominous text message he sent to one of those severed friendships would do any good.

“  𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓'𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐘 my phone ended up in the fountain.  ” lovro finished with exasperated sigh. his posture seemed limp, laxed as he slouched further into the plush seat as if he needed an espresso and copious amounts of sugar to even move. “  please tell me you’ve had a better week.” it was difficult to assume anyone had a decent time in the days that led up to their arrival in japan, but the bad luck had already followed. “  is it weird to be superstitious ? besides the usual black cat, umbrella, chimney sweeper . . .  ”

“  𝐔𝐇 𝐎𝐇.  ” the only phrase he acknowledged anya’s presence with across the lobby after a double, maybe even triple take. it had been awhile. coffee in one hand and phone in the other, lovro quickly made his way past a few stragglers. “  Привет, my dear old friend,  ” he stressed the adjective with nothing less than a grin. “  wow, how long has it been ?  ”

“ don’t tell me you’re still harbouring resentment.  at least you’re— ”  eyes flickering to him. “ consistent… ”  god forbid it be residual feelings.  “ is there anything else you want to get off your chest? ”  she didn’t have time nor the care to entertain or mend lovro’s broken heart and ego.  “ and yes. ”  the doors ding open and she steps in,  quick to press the button to the lobby.  anymore awkward moments in elevators,  she might have to start taking the stairs. 

"  𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 to say to you that i haven’t already said. you should know that.  ” lovro stepped into the elevator, avoiding the closing door just in time. he kept his back pressed against the opposite wall and his arms crossed all the while he peered over at his ex. “  and i don’t have resentment,  ” he spoke up despite the prolonged delay since anything had been exchanged, save for the low hum of instrumental elevator music. and while he should have stopped there, he didn’t. “  i don’t feel anything for you. i just asked a question and you decided to make a big deal about it. 𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍.  ”

𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐅𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐀.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it? I called ahead and requested that I get this apartment just because of that view.” She walked over to where he was standing then and handed him a glass of wine despite it not being the best idea given his already drunk state. With Adrianna staying with her cousins for the night, Stefania believed it would be fine. “There is no way I am giving this up. If you’d like to switch places and still do my job for a day though, I would not have a problem with that. You are smart enough to pull it off.” She laughed.

" 𝐆𝐎𝐃, 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐔𝐍𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐑,  ” lovro repeated again with what almost sound like a whining tone as his nose scrunched. but the male’s attention only dared to part from the view when he felt the chilled glass tap against his hand. the slovenian’s response time was slow, but eventually he reached for the glass of wine that was immediately brought to his lips. “  mmmh,  ” he quickly swallowed a gulp of wine, “  𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐀, as they always are,  ” and as if all those years had taught him nothing, lovro’s grin mimicked a very familiar one from long ago, one that was just pure arrogance. “  i’ll sleep . . .  ” he gestured with the glass of wine towards the couch. “  there. i’ll sleep there until you switch with me.  ”

𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐁𝐈𝐄.

     - ‘ SEND THEM our way then, i’ll let you know when festivities begin so those friends of yours can enjoy them to the fullest. ’ she understood she was somehow making the whole thing sound like her entire country turned into a sex shop mixed with a cabaret but that was the fun in it. a cultural shock. ‘ i wasn’t speaking of your poor nose, no, this was about the last time you lost to me. i believe we made a bet, did we not ? ’ there was a chance they hadn’t, barbie had played enough competitive people and bet against most of them, it was easy to get them mixed up. ‘ oh, well, you know what they say: nature works on cicles. they did what they had to do and went the only way they could. i’m sure we’ve all had at least one partner so bad we wished they were a male bee. ’

“  𝐖𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐄 𝐀 𝐁𝐄𝐓, of course we did,  ” and if they hadn’t, well it did sound exactly like something lovro would do, and maybe do again. “  i wanna make another one.  ” at that very moment. “  one more match like old times, huh ? i mean,  ” he gave a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders, “  we could just keep talking about male bees and bad sex, where this is headed.  ” a far cry from the fun country fact he found so appealing two glasses in. “  and for the record, yeah i’ve had a few of those, probably even walking the halls.  ” but his confessional was stopped short with the glass brought to his lips and an ice cube between his teeth a moment later. “  so ? barbie, one more tennis match ?  ”

𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐄.

ah, for once she was glad that she was wrong. “you should blame papa for that, i think he acclimated to scotland far too well. he gave up on teaching us slovene when i turned… five, i think.” catherine was as scottish as they come, and as quickly as the world had forgotten her slovene heritage she had done so as well. face to face with her cousin now, she knew that she could’ve done better. “sweden needed to work fast.” she pointed out ruefully, quite bordering on the salacious. catherine nodded her head in thanks, and took another sip of her iced tea. “i’m not going to ask you when you’ll be giving my uncle a grandchild, but i think you’ve been pestered too much during the wedding.” lovrenc was lucky that he could take a young wife and continue his house name, men had the luxury to not be bounded by a biological clock. “anyway, how are things back home? will you be saying anything publicly about italy and austria?” 

𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐑𝐎'𝐒 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐃 at her comment just long enough to register that there was more to that story than he needed to know about. but a breathy exhale followed by a tightlipped grin had transitioned the topic better than the preceding comment he kept to himself. 

“  you caught that,  ” which wouldn’t have been difficult given the various variations of ways different people had approached him on the topic, but each had been met by an answer more creative than the last when a drink was in hand. “  i think i got a pretty good answer now. see, if someone, say you, were to ask, i’d just tell you i guess i’ll just marry the next wine queen of slovenia so vote wisely.  ” needless to say, that quip hadn’t gone over too well with a few family members who compared his antics to his political approach behind closed doors. 𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒. 

he chewed the inside of his cheek at her next comment. lovro reached into his jean’s pocket to produce his phone and held the device out to his cousin with the screen lit up to showcase a news article. "  i need to, ” he admitted. “  on two things now.  ” the situation with italy and austria and that. an article about the slovenian foreign minister who had been accused of  a proposal to redraw the balkan borders. he was in denial of such a paper ever being in existence but allegations none the less weren't’ a good look, especially on a country so careful with their footing.

𝐋𝐄𝐎𝐍𝐎𝐑.

“And I had hoped you had forgotten me.” She grinned at him. “Oh… I wondered around for a while but ended up heading in the right direction. I was quite lucky! It just took forever. You know, stumbling and sitting down for breaks and everything. Truth to be told, I hadn’t even realized how serious a situation it was. So there’s definitely a silver-lining!”

𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐊𝐘, that was putting it lightly given the condition of some of the people he’d heard of and here she was, unscathed with fond memories of the incident on account of the drinking. "   you’re like a cat,  ” he teased. “  eight more to go.  ” and at that moment lovro’s gaze shifted just past leonor, thinking the tall blond leo had passed them when in reality he was no where in sight. “  did you tell leo about this, what happened ?  ” for one reason or another, the slovenian figured being the reason leonor got tipsy and wandered off wouldn’t be the best look for him.

𝐈𝐎.

the years spent apart didn’t do much to dissolve the distaste toward one another.  the tension is thick as always.  he’s irritating.  the way he looks,  the way he dresses,  the way he talks  —  everything about him annoys the fuck out of her.  and perhaps she’s pooling all her aggravation and projecting it onto him from her unpleasant encounter with asali and aminata.  regardless,  it didn’t matter.  there’s no love lost in their current nonexistent relationship anyway,  “ as bitter as always, ”  she narrows her eyes in response to his attempt at a compliment,  an amused smile in place,  “ wouldn’t you like to know. ”  walking past him to go to the elevator.  

"  𝐘𝐄𝐒, 𝐈 𝐖𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃,  ” lovro’s forehead creased, he always knew she was the source of premature aging. “  that’s why i asked.  ” and despite the cold shoulder, he still followed he to the elevator, pocketing his device in the process. “  io, remind me, were you always this friendly or did you start this over the five days it took you to go from one relationship to the next ?  ” lovro deadpanned as he reached across the brunette to press the elevator button the moment the two had reached her destination. “  going down ?  ”

“ WELL, crazy weekend, huh ? “ it was certainly a masterpiece of an understatement. “ normally i tell my friends how i wish they came sooner. in this case, i think i would have wished you pushed your arrival just a TAD later. “

“  𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐇, 𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐙𝐘,  ” lovrenc repeated with a slight raise of his brows, as if  the weight of the word could hardly do that weekend justice, but then again, could any ? “  it wasn’t exactly the welcome i was looking for so,  ” he tapped his knuckles against the other’s arm, “  you can make it up to me.  ” as good as any excuse to get out for awhile.

catherine shot her cousin a withering look, only mildly exasperated as she nursed her lemonade. “is this you telling me that i’m far too skinny?” she tsked testily, although she couldn’t quite find the energy to disagree so aggressively. to the slovene prince, she would always be the little princess who barely came up to his shoulder and trod behind her much older cousins, far too prideful to outwardly ask to be included. “i hardly think that an affair of state should be the place to play practical jokes, the press would have an absolute field day.” not to mention their enemies, their two countries were involved in two separate wars, after all. “but don’t you worry, lovro, i’ll be broomstick no longer-” she drawled, releasing a sigh through her parted lips. “-at least my stomach will stick out. i’m expecting, it seems.” 

"  what ? no, no. i reserve the teasing strictly for the last few minutes of every conversation so you don’t forget.  ” he grinned that smug sort that always hinted at a playful gleam behind his gaze. “  but someone needs to brush up on slovenian culture, it’s alf your dna, catherine.  ” he’d argue the better half. a conversation for another day however as his brow had creased at the vague statement she alluded to until it wasn’t. honestly, it took a moment for that spark of realization to hit in the form of wide eyes and parted lips. “  you’re pregnant ?  ” there it was, the obvious which couldn’t be said for her stomach that had yet to grow in size as he noted with a glance. “  my third favorite cousin, pregnant. sweden works fast.  ” lovrenc couldn’t contain the smile that once more graced his lips before that teasing tone in his voice had become somber. “  but congratulations, really. i’m happy for you two . . . and if it’s a boy i hear lovrenc is a good name. ” somber for a moment anyway.

“I am sorry for not seeing you sooner.” Arabella wanted to. She also wanted to arrive in Tokyo sooner but wasn’t given the permission to do so. Now that she was here, she planned on making up for lost time. “How have you been adjusting?” ( @lovrenc )​​

“  arabella,  ” lovro glanced up from the spot on the floor he’d fixated on for the better half of a minute and smiled. 

“  you made it.  ” a statement that had come as a surprise given everything he’d heard and read about the austrian’s incident during the quake. “  better, i think i have a soft spot for japan.   ” especially after argentina, and with that he stood, quick to offer her his own seat and take another. “  and when did you get in ? you look good.  ”

“  i spent the entire time avoiding rocks and looking for the girl who ran off with my alcohol.  ” lovro looked over the blonde for any sign of injury. tipsy during an earthquake wasn’t exactly an ideal pairing. “  you had everybody looking for you, did leo end up finding you ?  ” or maybe it had been the guide who kept vanishing once they had reached the town.
