I absolutely despise the idea of "fatphobia"

Fatphobia is not real. Not only is it stupid, but it's also disrespectful to people who experience actual oppresion.

I was once very fat, bordering on obese, but even then, i never bought into the "fat acceptance" bullshit. I knew and understood that it was my fault and responsibility. (Child obesity is a more complex issue, because it's more that often the parents fault for feeding their kids unhealthy food).

But anyways, I eventually realized that I was slowly killing myself, and I made a change. I lost over 60 pounds and am now at a healthy weight and bmi.

Recently, i've seen so many people talking about the hardships of fatphobia and as a actual oppressed group, it infuriating. 

I am a poc and a member of the LGBT community. All my life, I have experienced bullying and physical harassment because of those factors. Now you might be thinking, "fat people experience those things too!", but the key difference is that fat people can change. I can't. Now, I do not support bullying or giving people unsolicited health advice, but i do think that fat people should stop playing victim. No, you are not oppressed or discriminated against for being

Also, before someone tries to bring up the fact that some people cannot lose weight because of a medical condition, this does not apply to them. But the majority of fat people do not have a medical condition that stifles weight loss, so don't try to to use that as a justification.

Fatphobia is not real. Not only is it stupid, but it's also disrespectful to people who experience actual oppresion.

I was once very fat, bordering on obese, but even then, i never bought into the "fat acceptance" bullshit. I knew and understood that it was my fault and responsibility. (Child obesity is a more complex issue, because it's more that often the parents fault for feeding their kids unhealthy food).

But anyways, I eventually realized that I was slowly killing myself, and I made a change. I lost over 60 pounds and am now at a healthy weight and bmi.

So i’ve got time and patience right now so im gonna give you some examples-

- When I didn’t have a period for 9 years and it kept being pushed off and not looked into by multiple doctors because i was overweight and “it’ll get better if i lost weight!”

- When i did try to lose weight but i barely lost anything doing it the ‘healthy way’ so eventually got frustrated and so consumed by the numbers that i ended up developing an eating disorder

- when my eating disorder wasn’t categorised as one because i was still overweight despite having all the behaviours of one. Because obviously despite an eating disorder being a behavioural and mental issue, you can’t have one if you’re fat right??

- when it only finally got categorised as one because i ended up in hospital for a while for it. I was still overweight. They didn’t do much other than make sure my bloods were okay. Because i was losing weight which was great right? no care to how bad my mental health had gotten.

- When people around me despite knowing i had an eating disorder congratulated me on my weight loss bc “you did so well!!”

- Fortunately i managed to get my own shit on track and care about my health. I wasn’t losing any more weight but i’d lost 40kg in 3months at that point and was stabilised. I stabilised for 1.5 years before i went back to begging them to please check my bloods and hormones because i still hasn’t gotten a period

- When they finally checked into why i had fucking problems with my period for so long and they realised i had major fertility issues and shit really wrong with my hormones and ovaries- nothing connected to weight. The one doctor in the hospital looked into my medical history and saw i had symptoms for this since i was NINE. The hormonal issues also caused my issues with weightloss.

- When that one doctor realised that had things been looked at when i and my mum started asking about it a lot of the issues wouldn’t have gotten the point it was at. Had it been looked at and managed from the age i asked it to be then i would be able to have kids. As it is now if i were to get pregnant i’d have an extremely high chance of miscarriage and an extremely difficult and unsafe pregnancy.

- Throughout the years there’s only been two doctors/specialists who actually listened to me rather than just telling me to lose weight. And this isn’t for fertility issues. Any issues like migraines, a FUCKING EAR INFECTION, anything would be put down to lose weight.

- When my best friend who is also overweight but NOT unhealthy got super super depressed and suicidal and ended up not eating at all due to it and lost a lot of weight. Three different psychiatrists admitted she’d do better with medication but refused to give her any because the side effects were weight gain and “you lost so much weight i’m sure you don’t want to gain it back!” Until that point she never really saw her weight as an issue since she was always healthy. That fucked up her mental health even more.

- When another friend of mine had issues for years in losing weight no matter what she did regarding health. After many many doctors she finally went to one who listened rather than just telling her to lose weight (she was at a point where she’d have an apple and would gain weight)- actually ran tests. They found out she’s had PCOS her whole life. Which causes insulin resistance and also makes it harder for certain people to lose weight. Moment she was put on medication for it she was able to lose weight ‘normally’.

This is just me talking about personal experiences of mine and people i know directly. I joined a few support groups for people who have the same fertility and hormonal issues i do and those who are bigger had the exact same issue as me. People skinner or smaller never had this issue (this is purely off what those in the group said) and were diagnosed much earlier.

This is also only the medical stuff. I’m not about to go into social and societal ways i’ve been treated as less than human cause i can go on forever and honestly don’t have the energy to do so. I can say that since losing weight, and now being at a weight that’s deemed as socially “cute and thick” rather than just fat, i’ve actually been acknowledged more and treated better by everyone.

These aren’t ‘beliefs’ or us being ‘dramatic’. As Sem said if you took a sociology class or even LISTENED to what people were saying rather than just taking it as us complaining you’d see the major issues and how it’s systematic.

I guess my main issue with the FA movement is that they encourage people to continue engaging in behaviors that actively hurt them. Not to mention the way many fat activists try and patrol others and expect the world to cater to them.

Most accounts of medical fatphobia that I've heard consist of doctors telling patients that losing weight will help with diabetes, HPB, joint pain, etc. Things like these are related to being overweight, but your fertility issues and ear infection have nothing to do with weight. Maybe that was what the movement was once about but now-a-days it has it has just become a platform for fat people to complain about the world not catering to them. For example, i saw a poster claiming that "someone being proud of weightloss is fatphobic" and an article stating that "it is fatphobic for restaurants to have small chairs".

Also, of course I wouldnt change my culture, its part of my identity. I guess thats what you're trying to say. But being fat shouldn't be a part of someone's identity because being fat leads to a slew of detrimental effects.

You know a lot of drug users make using drugs a part of their identity? Its kinda like that. Something that is actively hurting you should not be part of your identity. And it definitely should not be encouraged.

Fatphobia is not real. Not only is it stupid, but it's also disrespectful to people who experience actual oppresion.

I was once very fat, bordering on obese, but even then, i never bought into the "fat acceptance" bullshit. I knew and understood that it was my fault and responsibility. (Child obesity is a more complex issue, because it's more that often the parents fault for feeding their kids unhealthy food).

But anyways, I eventually realized that I was slowly killing myself, and I made a change. I lost over 60 pounds and am now at a healthy weight and bmi.

Recently, i've seen so many people talking about the hardships of fatphobia and as a actual oppressed group, it infuriating. 

I am a poc and a member of the LGBT community. All my life, I have experienced bullying and physical harassment because of those factors. Now you might be thinking, "fat people experience those things too!", but the key difference is that fat people can change. I can't. I will never be able to stop experiencing racism and homophobia, but if they really wanted to, fat people could stop experiencing fatphobia.

Now, I do not support bullying or giving people unsolicited health advice, but i do think that fat people should stop playing victim. No, you are not oppressed or discriminated against for being

fat, and (white,cis,straight) fat people will never understand what true oppression feels like.

Also, before someone tries to bring up the fact that some people cannot lose weight because of a medical condition, this does not apply to them. But the majority of fat people do not have a medical condition that stifles weight loss, so don't try to to use that as a justification.
