When being posed with using this hashtag on a different form of social media, I opted to use that of Instagram. Immediately once I searched the hashtag, there were many different things that I saw. The major difference was that I was not only seeing pictures of different picture books, but I was seeing them being used- for example pictures of people reading the books to either themselves or their children. I have attached a image of this. Not only this difference, but through using instagram there are also many irrelevant things that come into the hashtag search. In terms of using the idea of hashtags within the classroom I believe that they are a great idea, however through doing this experiment I am able to see that some things that come up during a hashtag search are not always related. However, I think doing a class tumblr, which would be closely monitored by the teacher would be a great way to integrate technology into the classroom and also broaden what the students are exposed to in relation to the topic being studied.

Reflection 7 Through research and looking through search results for that of #picturebooks, there were many different outcomes throughout looking on Tumblr. I found many different and interesting posts, my favourite was one that link to a ‘modern family’. (I have reblogged a image of this) When I discovered this image of the picture book, I was able to create the link of what would be defined as the build of a ‘modern family’, that through using this modern resource I was able to find it. By completing this task of teaching a hashtag I have discovered that there are many teaching resources out there, with lots of untapped potential, and in particular there are many story books that are somewhat unknown and would create great text-to self connections for those students in a modern classroom.

For this weeks reflection, I would like you look at one of the many grade 5 and 6 videos. You can check the grade 5 and 6 boxes, as well as the video box, down the left hand side.

After watching one of these indigenous related videos, describe how you might use this particular video in the front loading of a literature unit based on an Australian and Torres Strait Islander book. You may choose any of the video’s, and you don’t have to match it to a particular book. For this purpose you don’t need to have a specific book, but if you do know one, then that would  be great,

The video that I elected to work on was http://splash.abc.net.au/home#!/media/1795081/dancing-the-torres-strait-winds-to-life-zey “Dancing the Torres Strait Winds to life: Zey” This video and teaching resource involves watching spiritual dance and music, and also colours. Ways that this resource can be used for that of a front loading lesson would be by getting the students to watch this short clips and commence a class discussion posing questions such as:

- Have you seen anything like this before?

- What culture do you think this could be?

- Are their any sounds or dancing styles that you recognise?

Through posing such questions it will link strongly to the students past knowledge and what they know prior to going into such a topic. It creates a great starting point for teachers, as they will know where to begin and what students already know.

Reflection 4

Looking at this opportunity for reflection whilst on our pre-service teaching rounds, we were posed with the concept of a visual display or display that worked efficiently within the classroom.

This picture from the classroom I was placed in shows the behaviour management system the entire school had in place. The ‘Strong choice, Weak choice’ chart is in every classroom and help promote and display when students are behaving correctly within the classroom, mainly in terms of be ready and engaged for their own learning as well as being respectful and mindful of other teachers/peers. Examples of this system being used would be: When the teacher is modelling and explaining an activity students that are putting their hands up and sitting respectfully and quietly are making a ‘Strong choice’. ‘Strong Choice’ would always be awarded first in order to praise positive behaviour and to model the behaviour to those children that may have a tendency to misbehave and show them what the expectations are. 

In reflecting on this process that was used throughout the school very successfully, I believe that it is something that I would definitely try to integrate into my own future classroom as it both rewards and guides students that are both behaving well and misbehaving.

Reflection 3

When looking at the topic for reflection this week there are so many different fields and varieties of text that I have engaged in reading, however the most influential and memorable would have to be the newspaper.

This past week the newspaper has been ever-present within my household, as it contains all that of the olympics with is definitely a current talking point. Not only has this topic been evident within our newspapers but it has also been very substantial on social media. Passages of social media that I have experienced reading on over this past week have been; Facebook, twitter and Instagram. 

The final element of reading that I have done over this week is through studying and completing assignments. Through completing these there were many different mediums of text that I was able to experience. Those included; Powerpoint slides, textbooks, and also blog posts upon the Deakin Cloud.

Reflection 2

Prediction activities that could be implemented for the use of this book (Are you seeing me) could be that of:

Prediction cards or posters. These can be used to create the flow of ideas for students. In having these around the room students will be familiar with the concept of predicting and will feel confident when posed with the idea. These cards or poster can be implemented during lessons to remind students of particular elements that may give clues about what might happen. 

Group turn and share, and brainstorm. This activity will helps those students that are unsure about what the reading may be about from just seeing the front cover, picture and title. In doing this these students will feel more confident creating their own ideas and sharing those with peers or the class. 

Creative/ Narrative planning. Predicting for this front cover could be integrated into narrative writing as the students can write a plan for the story using what they seen in the front cover, such as; the picture, the title, any personal connections they make to the book and also the children might be able to relate to the author and the types of books that they normally write.

Week 1 Reflection.

In upper primary school one of the core memories that I have is being read the stories of Andy Griffiths. These stories were read to us as an entire class group with the intention to spur on our desire to write creative stories, entice us to seek our own independent reading and it was also used as a reward as the stories within these books are very engaging to students in the upper primary age group.  

Through experiencing what it is like to read to my own classroom, I am able to see the great value of books that can help engage and motivation students to do things independently, and I can also gain great respect for teachers that are able to find such effective books to read aloud to a class group!

Looking into the future and having my own classroom I will enlist the use of reading to the class in a way to further educate, link to central ideas and/ or units of inquiry. I have also been able to discover books through uni and through being on placement that can relate to specific curriculum areas, such as ‘Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream: A Mathematical Story’.
