Horatio wished there was more he could say or do to help her, but he'd be here for her no matter what. He didn't fault her for feeling the way that she did, of course he didn't. She had every right to feel the way that she did, but he would do everything in his power to help her. In whatever way he could. Whether that was with his words or simply being with her or if... if she needed space, he'd respect that, too. But he'd remain right at her side for as long she needed him, for as long as she wanted him.
Seeing the tears in her eyes through the mirror, Horatio pressed his lips to her shoulder and squeezed her hand gently in his. He so badly wanted to tell her that Adam was dead, that he was gone for good, and Horatio, he... wished it was true. He wished he had drowned in that car and he couldn't even scold himself for wishing that. Because he was a dangerous man and death seemed to be the only thing that would stop him. That would stop him from trying to hurt Maria again, from trying to kill her. If not death, then he'd be spending the rest of his life in prison, but... god, he hated to think this, but he'd still be alive and as long as he was alive, he'd continue to try. And it made Horatio uneasy to think about because even the most dangerous of criminals that were imprisoned for life still found a way to hurt people. So yeah, even though Horatio was not normally that kind of man, he wished Adam had died in that car.
He wanted to at least tell her that he'd be getting life in prison, if not sentenced to death, not only because of his attempt to kill her, but because of him murdering a police officer. But before he could say anything the nurse's called for them from the room, eliciting a sigh of frustration from the Lieutenant because he just wanted some time alone with her. He also wanted her to have her pain medication and some food in her stomach so he was grateful the nurse had brought those in at least and he helped her back into the room and onto the bed, letting the nurse handle starting up the fluid pump again before she left the room.
"You nearly ate half of it this morning." He teased her with a chuckle, reaching for the water when she mentioned needing some. He held it up to her for her to drink, the straw still in place and when she was finished, he set it back down. "I know, sweetheart." He smiled sadly at her, his hand tenderly touching her wrist. "But as long as you and the baby do well overnight, I'm sure they'll discharge you first thing in the morning." That's what he was hoping for, anyway. For her and the baby to be okay, for there to be no complications. "And on the way home, we'll--"
"WE'RE BACK!!" Maddie's voice suddenly filled the room as she pushed open the door, running inside with a wide smile on her face. "Look, Momma! I brought you Toastie! He said he would keep you company with Daddy." She beamed, climbing onto Horatio's lap so she could hand her the plush which had Horatio smiling, his hands holding her sides to keep her secure on his lap. Given the pain Maria was in, he thought it best if she didn't climb onto the bed this time. At least until the pain meds kicked in.
"And and--Grandpa!" Maddie waved him over and in Nick followed, an overnight bag in one hand and a container of strawberries in the other. "We brought you strawberries!" She said, prompting Horatio to look at Maria. And when he saw the look on her face, he held out his hand for the container.
"Now that sounds like it would be good for dessert." Horatio smiled, taking the container from Nick. "She just ate some toast a little while ago and she can't have too much in her stomach, so why don't I set these here for now." He offered, setting them on the side table, behind the table lamp so the sight of them was obscured a little. He didn't have the heart to tell Maddie Maria couldn't eat them, at least not yet, especially when she seemed so happy to have brought her Momma's her favorite snack. She was always so thoughtful, just like her mother.
Thankfully, Maddie nodded in understanding, still wearing the smile on her face and Horatio kissed her cheek. "Are you gonna stay with her all night, Daddy? So she isn't alone?" Maddie asked and Horatio smiled, nodding.
"Mhm, I am." He looked at Maria for a moment, then back down at Maddie. "And then in the morning, if she's feeling okay, we'll be heading home."
Nick held up the bag in his hand. "We brought you both a change of clothes and her brushes. There's also a couple of toothbrushes in here, some deodorant and," he pulled out a book. "I grabbed the book sitting on your bedside table. Just in case he isn't enough entertainment." Nick gestured to Horatio with a smirk, only teasing of course which had Horatio chuckling. He wasn't sure if his daughter would feel up to reading, especially because of her concussion, but he wanted to bring it just in case. It wouldn't be the first time she read while she was hurt or so sick she could barely move or lift her head. His daughter was so strong. So goddamn strong and he was grateful that she was okay. To think he almost lost her a second time... he swallowed the knot in his throat and cleared his throat as he set the bag on the chair next to Horatio.
