And now what words do I have?
I’m not just any shuttle pilot. I’m your shuttle pilot. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Rough and Tumble
tapcaftogo:
As the sirens of C-Sec’s cavalry grew in closer, Mereel settled into his fresh cover and took a moment to thank the training his buir ingrained into his very core. For better or worse, he never left safety ill prepared—even if it meant taking along the minimum to guarantee a modicum of safety. Even if it was just a simple device this fresh galaxy provided, and armed with whatever he could pull from the other side.
Not that any of that mattered in the moment.
A quick peek told him the alley cleared and the remaining mercs fled the scene. He took the briefest of moments to disable the rifle tucked in his hands and set it down, before he rose on unsteady legs to fully … appreciate what was to inevitably be a difficult conversation. Should’ve thought of that before jumping in.
Hindsight, and all that. As clear as the flashing lights entering in the far end of the alley. He could make out the rough sounds of officers in pursuit in the distance.
A rough guess put only a handful of minutes of peace between them and the next leg of … activity. So, Mereel moved, headed towards the Alliance whose untimely tragedy he’d intervened—pushing an unsteady hand into his hair as he walked. A frown caught his eyes as he extracted a chunk of… something. Fruit? His mouth compressed in a wry smile. What a mess, there goes my mystique.
"Sorry about crashing your party," Mereel offered in earshot of the man lit by omni-tool as he tossed the bit of melon over his left shoulder. And maybe the gesture was meant to distract from his discreet once-over of his person. No obvious injuries. Nice. "You looked a little underwhelmed by the whole affair."
"Yeah, I had 'em under control. The problem was they didn't know it yet."
Message sent, Steve huffed out a laugh before shutting down his omni-tool. He had no idea who this guy was but boy was he thankful for him showing up. The fact that he was actually pretty damn charming (even when he had melon in his hair) made him feel even better about him risking himself just to help. Scrubbing his hands over his face, he sighed and stood up, holstering his sidearm. There was some temptation to toss it away but that would just make things worse when he was questioned on the situation. C-Sec protocol wasn't all that different from Alliance so he knew what to expect.
"Underwhelmed isn't the word I'd use but, hey, feel free to crash any more of my social events like that."
He laughed a bit harder but sighed again when he saw C-Sec handling some of the runaway thugs at the entrance to the alley. He nodded in the other direction at the back doors to the shops he'd been before the fight broke out.
"It's not too late to get out of here. No reason for you to get more involved since you already saved my ass." He paused, mentally kicking himself. "Which I'm thankful for. Wow, I'm an idiot. I didn't say thank you."
He smiled and held out his hand. "Thank you. Now get out of here before you get put in cuffs."
N7 Keep Steve
Ya know, I never went for Steve (probably because I don’t like M!Shep’s voice actor so I wasn’t going to sit through a trilogy of it), but I bet romancing him makes the final charge really tense depending on what your military force is at.
As usual, he’s on Redbubble.
You can find other Keep romance options by searching my tags for N7 Keep.
You guys like Steve? I like Steve. Steve is a good guy.
The day wasn’t really advertised by the pilot trainer but Boss knew better than that. He memorized the day from the moment he found out when Steve’s birthday was. It wasn’t something he celebrated at large at home but he wasn’t about to turn that around on the citizens of this galaxy, especially one he cared so deeply for. Loved so much.
While a good amount of his time was spent at Delta, tending to his training facility and making sure that things were running like clockwork, Boss had other plans forming in the back of his mind. Like how he would make sure Steve’s big day wouldn’t go by without fanfare.
The trainees had helped him out, getting them a bit of experience he was sure they hadn’t really expected but it would only help them in the future.
The day had come and the commando had placed the box at the foot of the steps in their cozy home, the fireplace filling the area with warmth as he stood in the kitchen and made Steve a breakfast of a loaded omelette, potatoes and coffee with extra bacon on the side. That may have been for Boss, too.
He wished for the man to wake up soon but seeing as he disabled his alarms, Boss only figured this would backfire slightly. The only thing he wanted to see right now was the reaction on Steve’s fact to the gift inside the box: a full kit of Mandalorian armor in his black, silver and blue colors. Not to mention the custom weapons he had designed to be sleek and subtle, easy enough to take wherever he wanted.
Now he waited on pins and needles.
Panicked doesn't even begin to describe how Steve felt when he woke up on his own accord, without the assistance of his trust alarm. A string of expletives left his mouth, each one a little louder than the last. The final one was definitely loud enough for Boss to hear it from his position in the kitchen, downstairs.
He rushed to get into his clothes, nearly falling over twice when he was working to get his pants on. As usually is the case when someone is rushing in those types of situations, he couldn't find something: his shoe.
Frantic searching around the room bore no progress in his scouring the bedroom for his shoes. He gave up and hurriedly moved to check downstairs.
"Boss? Have you seen-"
Steve almost tripped over a box at the base of the steps. He cused himself as he did stub his toe on it. No damage was done but it did hurt. A lot.
Out of frustration, he bent down to open the box, muttering about why that was such a dangerous spot to leave something and how he as going to tell Boss that after he calmed down and was at work- which he was only getting more and more late for as time passed.
"Oh my god." He completely forgot about everything else as he saw what was waiting for him inside the box. He also didn't move from his spot, admiring it in silence.
"I’m sure you don’t. Now come on, birthday boy." He smiled. "Time to party."
Steve chuckled and sighed. "Don't tell me you actually planned something."
theirishborncommander replied to your post:"So a little birdie told me something today."
"Is that so? Come on, handsome. Birthdays are fun."
"I'm sure they are, if you don't have work to do that day."
His fingers fidgeted with each other, repeatedly trying to crack his knuckles but nothing. He was clearly nervous. Nervous about what? Well, anything going wrong really. Or maybe looking silly in the others eyes. Ashley had told him she liked the idea, that it was romantic and that he would like it. He continued to smooth over the fine material of his suit. A classic kind of suit, not the newer fashions that filled every store these days.
Rather than the typical tie, he got a bowtie. That one was Jokers idea. He still wasn’t sure about it but in a situation like this, he would gladly take others advice on this. As much as a romantic as James considered himself, he knew he had to do something really nice on Steves birthday.
He paced around the room several times, going over what he was going to say in his head. Every little noise outside alerted James then failed him as it wasn’t Steve. Until finally, catching him nearly by surprise, the hissing of the door sliding open, he came to attention and stiffed. A nervous smile, still however very genuine and warm, slipped over his lips,
" Feliz cumplanos, Esteban. I um… wanted to take you out to dinner but… “
He made a vague motion to himself.
" I…didn’t think this out when I was putting this out and you know — you just came back from work… ” There was a faint red on his cheeks.
There was a clink from his hands. A small box with a bow on it clutched in his rough hands. Inside was a memento. A kind of locket that when you opened it, a small holographic image would show on the doors of it. It could fit two pictures but there was only one before. A picture of James and his uncle before he left for the marines. It was given to him before he left as a way to remember him. The other spot was now occupied by a picture of James and Steve back when they worked on the Normandy.
James opened his mouth to say something but nothing. Instead, he just wordlessly held it out.
" I would’ve given you something a little more practical but… I thought you might like it. It’s a bit old but it means a lot to me. “
Steve didn’t speak for a good amount of time after James approached him with his gift. First it was because he was caught off guard by finding the big marine standing there all dressed up. Before he could make a comment about it, however, Vega had started in on his little spiel.
It was cute. It was endearing. Most importantly, like the gift, it was heartfelt.
Steve was smiling hard as he closed the distance between them. He reached out and brought his arms around Vega’s torso and pulled him in close for a hug.
"Thank you," he muttered more quietly than he needed, considering they were alone, "I really appreciate it. I understand how much this means to you- and it means just as much to me, trust me."
He pulled back enough from the embrace to look at James. He wasn’t going to cry but he was definitely touched enough that he might’ve seen a bit misty-eyed.
"So a little birdie told me something today."
"You really shouldn't make a habit of talking to birds, Liam."
"So, funny thing. Scuttlebutt says it's someone's birthday today..."
"And here I thought you were above listening to such things, Miss Williams."
Didn’t mean to have your helmet on, there, Matty, but since I accidentally did, I’m gonna go ahead and be entertained by it.
Nice shades, bro.
"I still want another dog."
"I know."
