A fully-illustrated 78 card tarot deck by Emily Lubanko exploring the surreal, the intense, the queer, and the divine.
WE’RE LIVE!
The Lubanko Tarot is a richly-illustrated tarot deck of 78 original paintings that traverse the surreal, the intense, the queer, and the divine.
In addition to a 78-card fully-illustrated deck (no pip cards), each deck will also include a 110+ page guidebook written by me that will delineate card meanings, both upright and reversed (for those who prefer to read with reversals), as well as an introduction to help usher new folks into the concept of reading tarot.
Every single card was lovingly-painted, and the book lovingly-written, over the course of 6 years.
It is done, it is finished, it is ready, and it is a sincere work of queer and present art that I am so proud and happy to share with you all.

- Lubanko Tarot FAQ - Part 1 -
What is this? What is the Lubanko Tarot?
The Lubanko Tarot is a richly-illustrated tarot deck of 78 original paintings that traverse the mental landscape of the surreal, the intense, the queer, and the divine.
These cards are meant to help the reader grapple with their personal metaphor and mythos. As a queer artist with a lens of the vivid-surreal, the sensual, and the pain-and-catharsis of life, I am sharing that intensity, that queerness, those shocks of color with you.
How do I use a tarot deck?
For those who are familiar with Tarot, there are many ways to use a deck. Some use them for reflection, some for divination. Some people just enjoy having a special art object and collection of 78 prints to lay out and admire. Some folks also use tarot decks as altar pieces, or isolate specific cards.
I personally use tarot from anything to meditation to therapy tool, and thus I have structured this deck for a wide range of uses. I'm including a guidebook in every deck and box that explains more!
How much will the deck be?
$65 + shipping! Shipping is looking to be about $10-12 in the US, quite a bit more international unfortunately (I have no control over shipping prices, alas.)
What are the cards going to be like in terms of look and feel? What cardstock?
The final deck will be 350gsm high quality matte cardstock with a protective UV varnish. I want this to be both a beautiful and hardy deck, and to be usable and good to shuffle, so I’m going to be testing all of that before I finalize it!
Right now I’m waiting on a fancy prototype of the real deck from the printer, so expect to see an update on that when it gets here! I've already submitted my files to the printer, so it's underway and sure to happen.
Is there a guidebook?
Yes! Each deck will come with a 100+ page guidebook . The guidebook includes: an Introduction, a ‘How to Use This Deck’ section talking about tarot and all the ways you might interact with it, a section on the Major Arcana and all of their meanings (with reversals), a section on the Minor Arcana and all of their meanings (also with reversals) , and a brief Artist Afterword.
Will there be any recommended spreads?
Yes! So in the guidebook that I wrote that comes with every deck, I have a “How to Use This Deck” section that talks about different uses for tarot. I cover the concept of spreads vs meditating on cards, and I provide the simple-but-effective spread that I personally use for most all of my readings. This should give folks a good starting point while also helping some of the different ways to use this deck.
What will the stretch goals be?
The first stretch goal is going to be holographic silver edges on the cards, which I am really excited about. I hope we can get there!
Each further stretch goal will be about enhancing the deck or experience in some way. The second one will be revealed upon Kickstarter launch, and the others will be revealed once the first two are met!

It’s happening! The card art is done. It is time to launch.
The machinations are underway for an August Kickstarter for my tarot deck.I am so thankful for the kindness and support I’ve received on this journey. It’s been many years of doing my best to make the most sincere and intense project of my life, and it’s finally coming to a head. I could not have done this to this degree without all of you being here with your encouragement and your kind words.
I’ve been doing the logistics for this for a while, but now comes the marathon-to-sprint of getting everything together formally for the Kickstarter. In the next couple of months, I am going to be rolling out more details as I know them. This has been 6+ years in the making, and I cannot wait to share it with you all.
I may ask you in the next coming months: if you are interested in seeing this made, tell your friends! Tell your networks. Tell someone who you think would be helped or warmed by this art.
I’ll post the Kickstarter link when it’s ready–and it’s almost ready.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, and I cannot wait to share this with you all.

78+ ORIGINAL #TAROT PAINTINGS. 6 YEARS OF MY LIFE.
The Lubanko Tarot is coming this 2020!! Keep an eye out for the Kickstarter this year!
Why did this tarot deck take 6 years of my life? Because I never let it be the Only Project. When I started years ago, I made a promise to myself that it would be something special that I only made paintings I was proud of. If I wasn’t feeling it, I wouldn’t paint it.
I started this when I was freelancing years ago, working other art and design jobs and making a lot of things for other people to pay the bills. I’ve made a lot of other things in between. This project was meant to be 100% sincere, with no compromise. I’d make it no matter what.
I can say that on this day of finishing all of the cards– I kept my promise. I did not compromise. Every single one of these is a sincere piece with the metaphor I meant to say at the time I meant to say it. They are not “perfect” art, as I intended. They are a sentence.
These pieces will mean something different to everyone who looks at them, and that’s good. That’s art. I’ve put these little fragments of my soul out on the table, and we’ll see which pieces of our mutual souls speak and resonate, and I think that’s lovely.
I’ve got some logistical stuff to wrap up (books, so that folks can learn the tarot and read the meanings! card backs!) but I’ll be announcing more and more details closer to the date.
I am not on tumblr as much anymore, but I will try to update closer to the Kickstarter launch. If you want to keep in better touch with this project, follow me on:

6 of Cups– A painted WIP, and a mourning. Full public post on my patreon: on the 6 of cups and what it means to look back. Please read the warnings in the “so this is your warning” paragraph, as it gets dark.
In light of the news that tumblr is removing all “adult content”– as an artist, I do not trust them to discern drawings of nudes from anything else, and I object to the nonsense label and babying anyway.
