heyy all ♥ name's lola, here presenting 1/2 of the #601 unit, kim minhyun — probably the worst person to be against when you're playing dodgeball because you will lose, but also someone with an extremely... well. non-flashy, boring power. i haven't been present for the original run of astonish but i've heard only good stuff about it so i am beyond excited to be here. you can read his profile here and a general background here, under the cut i will present more of trivia ♥

in hindsight, minhyun shouldn't of have gone about his way so carelessly, weight of ground and airborne transportation weighing his stomach down and allowing only a singular thought to occupy his head — if only he were any more calculated, the predicament that hangs above his neck on a loose thread would never have the chance of occurring. if only he took a breather, looking at the paper he tightly gripped in his hand, he would have seen a glaring issue printed in big font and everything would turn differently.

all the luck in this world could gather within his body insofar he's bursting at the seams with it and none of it would ever be enough to aid a boy who doesn't think to simply stop and… read.

so when the doors open ajar, the first thing that comes to minhyun's mind is not even the raise of his gaze to acknowledge them, rather to call out how he hasn't requested room service in a simple dismisal. only when he's met with silence in return does he lift himself off the bed, an annoyed sigh caught in his throat like a lump of coal before the sight bestowed unto him.

the doors behind her —- closed.

"hey," he says reluctantly and with a blatant voice crack, phone set aside, though the audio of a random video continues playing. he knew jiaxin was coming (something about taking a break from everyone in-betweens why are you even asking), and still her appearance in his room takes him off guard.

"why are you… here?" comes the obvious; eyes adrift to her baggage. "i mean, you can wait here while the reception does... whatever… but i wish you texted me, like, a heads-up."

SCENE 8. EXT. A BONFIRE BY THE BEACH, NIGHT.

THE BLANKET nudges his shoulder before he even really sees the person there. "oh," kiyeon says through lightly chattering teeth, glancing aside to see that someone has joined him at the water's edge, "thanks. if you saw that, no you didn't."

that: his ungraceful little trip a couple of minutes ago, while he was trying to pick up something glittering in the water. he'd been so busy rooting through the sand that he didn't see the tide coming in until it was knocking into him like a clammy hand come to reprimand him.

kiyeon yanks the blanket tight around himself. i know you, he thinks. he can see bits of their side backlit by the bonfire behind, a corner of their mouth, but instead it's their voice that rings a bell. "you're from silver line, aren't you?" he's pretty sure this is the one who keeps making the walls vibrate with music and other noises past midnight. kiyeon rubs the back of his wrist over his cheek, making a face when he finds bits of sand there. he had many hypothetical scenarios of how this confrontation would finally go and how he would finally tell them to please, please plug in headphones, i'll even buy you a pair. none of them involved being drenched, sandy, and forced to accept the enemy's blanket. "you're not wearing your shirt. your tummy doesn't hurt anymore?"

a walk by the water seems as the most fitting mean of ending a day that has taken a chaotic turn, even if it meant he's walking underneath nothing but moonlight; foot in front of foot upon pavement, lackadaisical in the way he moves with a speed that would make anyone else blue with worry, hugged by the warmth of a singular blanket. it's peaceful to be surrounded by nature, sound of cicadas somewhere in the distance like a calming tune. it's a change of scenery that's – surprisingly – well accepted by minhyun, even in all of his distaste for the sand crunching underneath him, or the inevitable sweat that would soak him throughout the vacation days. the final clear of mind, prior to the descent into the dreamscape — or it would have been.

en route to his rooming, it's hard not to notice the commotion, a nearly comedic sequence of action that draws out a quiet laugh from minhyun and thus, a detour has been made.

and kindness — kindness can be worn in so many different forms. it can be holding out for an old lady making her way out of the corner's 7/11, or leaving kibble out for the cats that meddle in dirty alleys; towards kiyeon, it's the simple act of handing the cloth that's kept him warm previously, unperturbed by the heavy air that lingers between them, though also ignorant to it. he stands there, for a minute, watching the other's body disappear into the blanket.

"yeah. we live on the same floor," he says, finally, weavering the awkward trepidation away with the arrival of his voice. shortly thereafter, minhyun sits down alongside them, knees drawn to his chest, head tilted to side, as to give him a proper look. the bonfire next to two of them crackles, creating a fickle dance of red. "yeah. i definitely saw you sneaking around here and there. i have eyes everywhere, y'know?" finger pats against his temple, followed by him looking around, as if to put an emphasis on his joke. "but i'm not a gossip. i actually saw nothing. not at silver line, or here."

then — he nudges into kiyeon with his shoulder, bare skin against the fleece, with a complete disregard for their personal space. instead — "i just had motion sickness. so i'm fine." pause. "soooooo… if you catch a cold right about now, tell me you'll have a better excuse? taking a dip in ocean at night, all alone, doesn't really seem that believable."

"is this a bad time to mention i'm not good with the dark?"

she knew there was something off with this elevator the day she moved in.

definitely not a superability, maybe not even a hunch — you could call it more or less just good observation skills. the thing was rickety from the start, and jiaxin didn't like riding in it from day one. it felt janky and outdated, with numerous floor buttons lacking any acknowledgment of being pressed no matter how hard you shoved your thumb into it. the thing was slow and from the eighties, and guessing from the obvious grunts of metal from the pulley systems clearly trying to do its best somewhere deep in its engineering, jiaxin knew this thing had to be on its last leg.

go figure the rent was cheap (enough) — the thing probably hadn't been serviced in forty years. literally insane.

she wasn't too bothered at first about the forced delay to the sixth floor made by kim min... something. it'd been six months since jiaxin had moved in but had put in the barest amount of effort possibly to get to know her neighbors — otherwise known as actively avoided them — especially those not on the tenth floor. she remembered hearing his name from someone else in passing but didn't care to commit it to her memory, figuring she would have no opportunity that would arise for her to actually need to use it.

go figure, of course, when the silver line apartments' generator decides to simply not do the one thing it was engineered to do and their ride of silence in their crickety, flourescently lit box of steel comes to a grinding hault and the power is instantly cut, jiaxin is not having it.

"all i wanted was to come home and just take a bath and be left alone," she mumbles, somewhat complaining to herself aloud but almost hoping for a response. in return, she's met with the male's confession that comes, arguably, at one of the worst times you could possibly proclaim you don't like the dark. "great," jiaxin smiles to herself in the dark, groaning louder this time. thankfully, at least, she's got her phone to use as a flashlight.

both of their figures are illuminated then only by the light that she points at the floor, but her face reveals itself to remain downturned as it always is. "i'm going to take a wild guess that you don't have any powers that involve seeing in the dark then, do you?"

he should have known that something evil was brewing around the corner, with how good of a day he was having. smooth sailing and with sunshine above his head, he allowed himself to enjoy in the moment; rather eager to forget that, just because he was blessed with something as asinine as the power of good luck didn't mea that the universe would try its damn hardest to cancel it out by ay means necessary, however unfair it ay seem from the outer edgers. it was always like that; every good would come quickly overshadowed b the bad, though at the end of the day its not like his leg was broken, or there were any greater misfortunes. just annoyances, always and without a doubt.

and for a second, at the back of kim minhyun's mind, there was this idea that just maybe today would be different. that he'd punch in the numbers of his apartment, say a hello once he's in, greeted by seonyul from inside the room he caved himself in, or complete silence, and he could crash into his bed for the next twelve hours straight; just in time or the next shift. it could have been perfect — hell, he even caught the elevator once he called out for the person who went in ahead of him, instead of having to wait for the net one; or god forbid climb the stairs.

the silence that filled the cabin was, to an extent or at least to minhyun himself, filled with an air of awkwardness. he tried making small talk, though he knew that, in spite of visiting daemon and pouring his weary, drunken heart out at the barstool on more than one occasion, he did not actually know anything about jiaxin. all the more awkwardness when the creak sliced through it, darkness engulfing them within seconds.

"wow, i was going to bathe, too," he said, even more abruptly than his confession from before. "i — on the sixth floor, of course. in my own apartment. alone as well. it's not like silverline offers jacuzzi that can fit two people in it. just you, alone, bathing. yeah."

his blabbering — blatant in the mannerism of nervousness, rather saying anything than having to be brought before the reality of a power outrage while you're in the middle of riding an elevator. hell, he didn't even notice what floor they passed, before being forced into a detour. no; he just nervously rubbed at his wrist, same one shortly thereafter raised to shield his squinting eyes from the sudden flashlight that illuminated the room.

"you're out of luck," he says, snickering thereafter at the irony of it. was it his fault as irrational of a thought it was? he slouched downwards, as slow as possible as not to make the cabin shake too much. "just luck, funnily enough. i don't know. maybe i can jump? maybe someone coincidentally dropped a mattress at the bottom of the shat so i won't become a splatter? fuck, sorry. i think i might be claustrophobic too? can you do it? like, healing bones and all. i think i saw someone like that on tv."

the power has been gone for nearly a full forty-eight hours, and sarang was tired. she swore up and down that electricity didn't run her life, yet this blackout has caused a lot of unexpected inconveniences for her.

on top of the list is the fact that the elevators aren't in service, and she really hates that she has to walk nine flights of stairs if she needs to go to her apartment. she wants to think that the sudden workout is worth it, but it's so embarrassing that she's tired before her shift and all she's done is walk up and down some stairs. luckily she doesn't work far from home — truly, she's never been more grateful — but after her shift the last thing she wants to do is walk all the way up again.

she also hates that she has to charge her phone elsewhere instead of the front desk or her apartment. it's the reason she has found herself settled in at hi-dine, claiming the seat in front of minhyun because he was the only person she recognized within the few-second scan of the room. thankfully they had power here for her to enjoy not only their wifi and food, but also their numerous outlets scattered around the seating area.

hearing the other's words, she bites the inside of her cheek as she contemplates their circumstances. she wishes she could be optimistic for the both of them, but there's a lot they actually don't know about the explosion that caused the power outage. could it have been a villain at work, or was it as simple as an accident? his words don't exactly make her feel better about the situation either. she hopes it doesn't get worse.

"um... i don't know if i believe in the power of manifestation, but just in case, i'm not going to tell you all of the ways it could get worse. if it makes you feel better, at least it's giving everyone a chance to be outside? some people could use the fresh air..."

it goes like this: one moment, minhyun is sitting behind the desk at the pc bang, aimlessly staring into the distance as sounds of keyboard and mouse clicking lull him into a semi-sleep, vivid chatter of the occupants nothing more but another set of noise to be placed on an ignore. the day is like any other, hours blending together; to a point that — if not for the digital clock on the wall ahead that he gazes at ever-so-slightly, unheeding — moments would turn into days and he would forget when he came, or when was it time to leave.

next moment, the whole room goes pitch dark, sounds of rather unpleasant indignation what would fill the room in the upcoming minutes. my game, like in an unison; they would grumble and heave and demand for an explanation that none at the pc bang would be able to offer. power will be back within an hour, the staff said among themselves; unaware of whether the gamers believed them, or if they even believed it themselves. an hour — all it would take.

except it didn’t. this time, hour seeped into two, into three, into a day that stretches out to claim more, with minhyun painfully aware of the slow passage of every waking moment. it’s like the opening of hourglass has become clogged, thus putting everything around them at a stop. and while it is fine during the day and underneath the warm sun, it’s nighttime that makes his stomach turn.

it’s what he pushes underneath the imaginary rug for the time being, however, crumpled inside along many worries that are pushed out of sight ‘til the last moment; his fingers, instead, expeditiously swiping away at his phone’s screen; so deep into the research of what the hell is happening and why is it hidden that it takes him good five minutes to notice that sarang has sat in front of him.

“um. they’re a bit soggy,” he makes a comment, bowl (with everyone finding a nesting inside hi-dine during these trying times they seem to slowly be running out of dishes; like anyone wants to be there, like it’s the fault of common people that hi-dine is the only place even left with power —) of pale french fries pushed towards her. his phone is put away, though his hands become preoccupied with rubbing at his temples.

manifestation.

he’s always wondered if there is someone out there with a power of turning those wishes into reality.

“you should have seen the faces of boys back at gg’s. i think some of them have seen the light of day for the first time in over twenty-four hours. yuck.” he pauses, then: he was one of them, too. simply because he had to watch over them — it forces an awkward laugh out of him. “something stinks, though, sarang. two days and we’re still here? it’s not like this is the nineties — not that i was alive back then — and it shouldn’t take that long for powerlines to be fixed. especially with, like, super-smart people around.”

✂ - steal the show

when the power goes out, jaeyong is across the table from minhyun at hi-dine.

usually he doesn't bother going to hi-dine. it's too expensive, and it's too much of a tourist attraction for his liking. he swears half the people there at any given time are hoping to catch sight of some aeternal, and jaeyong prefers to avoid aeternals. unless they're on his hitlist, which is...somewhat small, at the moment. nonexistent, even. but it's waiting.

he ended up at hi-dine today based off of luck, really, which is to be expected whenever minhyun is present. he convinced his friend to steal some first aid supplies from nite rite pharmacy for him, because minhyun, i work at a record store, i get like 9,000 won per hour. what if i'm dying. do you want me, your good friend, to die, minhyun?

of course he could afford to pay for it himself, but if minhyun was kind enough to help him out...it's a win for him!

second win of the day: on their way back to silverline they find a solid chunk of money just laying in the street. jaeyong offers to use it to buy minhyun food (nevermind that they surely only found it because of minhyun) because he is a very generous soul.

and yet minhyun's luck is not enough to prevent whatever explosion causes the entire power grid to go down. hi-dine's generator kicks in soon enough, leaving them with some of the only light in the city, apparently - judging by how many people have shown up in the past hour they've been here waiting for their food since.

"not sure," he answers. it's been pretty chaotic in here. "surely someone would've said something if they wouldn't though, right?"

jaeyong doesn't really have anywhere better to be, other than making sure daeyong doesn't do something stupid, which is...admittedly a minor concern.

"should we just steal that too?" he suggests, mischievous glint in his eye that doesn't quite indicate whether he's serious or not. he isn't sure how they would go about stealing food inside hi-dine, but it'll at least be fun to think about while they wait, right?

the thing about kim minhyun’s morality compass is not that it’s all over the place, or that he’s easily swayed by the charismatic influence of a third party, weak in his footing and instead eager to follow, as some would imply; it’s just that he ignores it altogether, throwing it down a bottomless canyon. he does what benefits him, when it benefits him — and if it ends up as an unpredictable ride on rollercoaster of ups and downs, then he will go along that ride, unscathed as ever. he’s never been afraid of it, anyway (though truthfully, he’s never been on a literal rollercoaster, either), and it’s not like his luck would have the construction crumbling underneath his seating.

tomayto, tomahto — two fish in a vast pond, confined into a corner of mud and bile that is the bottom, ungrateful step of the pyramid. but sun does shine through, even when you’re swimming in shit, giving a glimpse into that luxurious life on top that’s entirely out of their reach. today, it comes in form of a chain reaction, a by-product of minhyun simply choosing to exist. a ‘trip’ to apothecary leads to a couple thousand won just laying there on the ground, like an offering to no one in particular. there is no one, either; just the two of them and a hand reaching for it nonchalantly.

of course, the course of action — selfish as it is, so not fitting the great power and great responsibility philosophy — places them at the restaurant. what remains is beyond his influence, really; not even the luckiest of guys can predict a power outrage, let alone prevent it from the bounds of a diner he does not feel like he belongs in, in first place. the initial gasp of fright and surprise escapes him, replaced promptly by a curious raise of eyebrow and a smirk across his lips.

“you want to run for it?” it’s somewhere between an inquiry and a statement, a tingle within minhyun’s eye awakened; as if what jaeyong had proposed enters his mind in form of an adventurous dare. he moves in closer — his voice but a whisper, though the chatter of commotion around them would cover his plan from prying ears either way. “just… grab whatever? but, if you get some… weird, over-the-top fancy shit… i’m not sharing mine with you.”

"oh? um... okay... what do you mean?" yunseo hopes the irony isn't lost on minhyun too when the latter told him that they're stuck. does minhyun's ability have a switch-off button that suddenly goes haywire at random times? does he feel just lazy using it? 'is he playing a prank on me?' yunseo tries to make sense of what just came out of minhyun's mouth.

sure, getting stuck can be purely accidental, but it's kim minhyun we're talking about. how does one get stuck with a kim minhyun around?

truth be told, yunseo doesn't know much about the guy ( even though he's a casual face he sees more often than his family ), but from what he has heard, kim minhyun is literally luck personified, which could only mean that he can get away from anything & everything. you can't blame yunseo if his initial reaction to the news is doubt. "are you sure?" yunseo stands up from where he's planted, getting a little bit worried now.

he tries to inspect minhyun's face for any traces of tomfoolery, but with how little light's getting in from the outside ( if at all ), he can't discern if that glint in minhyun's eyes is mischievous or if that's just how they normally look.

though minhyun’s hand remains wtth a firm grasp on the door handle, giving it a couple more of pushes, almost desperate and with a tinge of annoyance to his sigh, the head upon his neck turns ever slowly towards yunseo’s direction, gaze drifting to him, directly.

many treat him as a good luck charm. like all of problems would dissipate into fragments of dust to be forgotten, just because he’s in their vicinity. like rubbing his hand against your own would transfer that luckiness unto another; he’s pulled left, right, left — torn apart, little pieces of him scattered, remaining with everyone who’s ever touched him. his magnetism towards the good fortune, however, selfishly persists limited to himself only; to the misfortune to everyone else.

so here they are — with moonlight brightening the room through a tiny window above them and something heavy blocking the doors from opening, which adds another of overly ironic moments lining up in his life. he gives another push to the doors, this time with more desperation.

“i mean — like — it won’t budge. i may not be, like, super strong, but i have muscles — wait. maybe if i stare hard enough it will move…”

cue an expression of pure determination, lip bite, the full package. and then... absolutely nothing.

minhyun laughs under his breath, a cackle, almost, when faced with the situation, corners of his mouth curling before he turns to look at yunseo again, “someone will come. they have to… eventually. i think. but, hey. don’t tell me you’re, like… scared of the dark?”

"i don't really… want to get out of here? like, maybe it's a bad outlook and all, gotta stay positive, aim for big stuf…" he laughs, though the layer of awkwardness that could usually be found within the voice of an individual admitting their utmost defeat is nowhere to be seen. no, he laughs; shrugging those admittances away. "it's really not that bad living here, y'know? like, sure, there's some mold here and there... but a little mold never killed anyone. i think."

"i think my smile is cute. that doesn't make me too conceited, right? all things considered. i also ... like that i'm so lucky. and... and — i don't know. can i also say i'm humble, or would that cancel my smile remark?"

"you're not going to laugh if i say it out loud, will you?" instead, it's he who laughs, short and sweet, before he continues. "i wish i could be super strong. the darkness is scary, at least initially. you're twelve, in a new town, a new apartment, and the electricity has been cut off: you're alone, sitting on the cold hardwood floor, awaiting or something that's unknown to your childlike mind. every creak of the floor above you, wails of the wind outside, gaunt hand knocking against the window in intervals, as a warning. it's a common occurrence, leaving you acquainted with things that no one should be close with. and then it develops: unknown phenomena turn into friends, turn into comfort. there's something about that pitch blackness that brings comfort and when you close your eyes, there is peace.

it's true now, too. despite the sirens' wails in the distance, echoing through empty streets, relentless chatter of men and women somewhere in the distance. he drowns it out, leaned against the back exit's doors, a cigarette between his lips; it's the only source of light, at least in this area. knowing darkness intimately gives him an invisible (or rather, one that's only perceived by him alone) advantage over others: it is what it is. he's unbothered, to a blasé point that sudden and quick-passing flickers of flashlights behind him aren't even acknowledged ----

that is, until the doors behind him give out; minhyun stumbles, cigarette falling out of his mouth with a short curse. he stares for a second, his eyes both adjusting to the newfound circumstance and trying to discern a face amidst it all.

"oh, no, it's i should have paid more attention." a subpar excuse that comes with a shrug; he offers somewhat of a half-reassuring smile. "do i look like the type who's easily scared? wow, i'm almost offended."

three hours and forty minutes into the blackout. somewhere in the distance, sound of sirens can be heard echoing through the city. a crick has settled in his neck for the past hour, lack of circulation rendering his legs numb, though minhyun remains cross-legged on the concrete floor regardless. in silence underneath clear night sky, awaiting for the never-coming return of power; he hasn't even picked flashlight for himself, rendering it futile, a drop of defeatism he finds himself diving into. for all purposes, kim minhyun is, in this absolute mess of a situation, invisible.

what are aeternals for? flashiness of front pages, face plastered across small screens on prime time, a simulacrum of convenience and personal gain; but when real people need —

"oh," he breathes out, his gaze raising, though there is a blatant and deliberate lack of urgency to his movement. minhyun shrugs, scooting over & stretching his legs out. then, he tilts his head; and he smiles. "i don't really have an extra shirt or anything, if you wanna sit down. i'm so not climbing six floors of stairs. and if i do? and then the building somehow crumbles and ——— i'm rambling, shit. sorry. yeah. do you want me to get you something to drink and cool down?"

"how about..." he pauses for a second, lost in deep thought. any idea escapes him, the sourness of his life catching up to him at once: it's a bitter feeling, an acrid aftertaste within his mouth. "i'd say... a beach? i'd like to be able to relax for like a week straight, no worries whatsoever. kind of ultra lame, i know."

a sigh escapes him, shortly thereafter a smile emerging in its place. tense feeling of his shoulder dissipates & minhyun slouches. "it's a man-cave, y'know? the whole place is, i mean. i have a single bed, a desk, some comics on the floor and i'm, like, against wardrobes. why do we need wardrobes? you're going to wear the clothes and dump them into hamper within like two days of washing them, anyway. that isn't to say my clothes are on the floor.... not usually... but i just don't think we need wardrobes, so i don't have one. and i have a bean bag. big fan of bean bags. and it's minion themed."

"well, obviously, i follow all the latest trends. i'm cleaning it at least once a week, i have plants, like, everywhere. some fancy movie posters, a fancy lamp and — and — a vase! yeah, there's this really pretty vase next to my bed and i change the flowers as soon as they wilt. it's soo pretty in there, y'know? i can't say that for my roommate though. yeah!"
