@prequelsnet prequels appreciation week: day 7 — the force
↳ light side | dark side
...as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self. with each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins. - Matthew Stover, Revenge of the Sith
VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.
Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)
I just looked, and there are 170 other people on there, also checking to see if there are fish waiting.
Please remember, if ever you are tempted to make a sweeping statement about human nature, that on this night in March, 2024, while war rages, there are 171 of us looking to see if a fish needs us to ring a doorbell.
Plenty else is going on, but also that.
(PS, the site says that the busiest times for fish are sunrise and sunset, which for now are at about 6:30, AM and PM, local time. Local time in Utrecht is 1 hour ahead of GMT, 5 hours ahead of EST, if that helps. I'm going to try to remember to check back again around 2 AM my time, when it will be morning for the fish!)

my main criticism of solarpunk is why isn’t it happening
it absolutely is and here’s the wiki we’re building
what exists in terms of community developed sustainable technology
but like any revolutionary social movement it requires active involvement to achieve the change you want to see. Here are some handy resources for getting more involved:
Food Not Lawns - project to help communities feed themselves without capitalism
Food Not Bombs - same idea as above but less emphasis on growing food
The Buy Nothing Project - community resource pooling to combat consumerism
Demand Utopia - Rojava solidarity & social ecology activism - speaking of which, The Internationalist Commune of Rojava have their Make Rojava Green Again project.
Also, if you want your solarpunk social media then start looking to the decentralised non corporate sunbeam city mastodon instance (blend of tumblr and twitter without your data being sold) where you’ll find shit tonnes of information on making food, growing things, building sustainable technology yourself etc being shared - like this $3 DIY solarpowered USB charger or this $30 wind turbine made largely from salvaged parts.
In terms of building online infrastructure to actively combat capitalism, using and helping to develop open-source, community run software & websites like the sunbeam city mastodon instance should be a priority. This is a good alternative to google for searching.
In terms of building real world solarpunk infrastructure as resistance to actively combat capitalism, the organisations linked above are honestly invaluable - especially Food Not Bombs. I’d also add the Industrial Workers of the World (a democratic workers’ union for anyone in the world without hiring/firing power) as well as tenants’ unions - like ACORN in the UK. Finally, find or start a community garden.
@mixbagofholding
It wasn’t until recently that I realized not many people these days know about the Freecycle Network but it’s totally a thing and you should totally know about it.
Finally details for a windmill
One of the most horrifying videos on YouTube that appeared in my feed this week was that of US Air Force airman Aaron Bushnell immolating himself just outside the Washington DC Israeli Embassy in protest of the genocide in Gaza. Evidently, he had received orders that he would be assigned along with other US military personnel to assist the Israeli Defense Forces in their so-called war against Hamas. As he stated in his video, he preferred to take this extreme step rather than be complicit in genocide. He was only 25 years old.
Rest in peace Aaron. You are a hero. I hope that your action draws more support in the US to end this heinous slaughter of the indigenous Palestinians by their genocidal oppressors.

Some relevant movies and tv shows that should be boycotted:
Stranger Things: Noah Schnapp claimed zionism is sexy and Hamas is ISIS and liked videos on twitter mocking Palestinian people; actor Brett Gelman and producer Shawn Levy are zionists and both support Schnapp
The Last Of Us: israeli politics in The Last Of Us Part 2; Neil Druckmann openly supports israel
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Rick Riordan, the author of the books has made zionist comments neutral to Israel and the genocide
The Umbrella Academy: Aidan Gallagher openly supported Israel on instagram with a post "I stand with Israel", post is now deleted
Deadpool 3: Shawn Levy, the director of the movie is a zionist
Dune 2: Timothee Chalamet made a joke on SNL about the genocide in Palestine
Any Disney movies and shows including Inside Out 2, PJO, The Eras Tour movie, Moana 2, Marvel content: Disney is funding Israel, it has been announced that a new Israeli superhero will be joining the MCU
If you support Palestine, boycott zionist companies and stop funding them. Besides, there are many ways to watch the newest movies without paying a cent.
Please feel free to add more movies and shows with source links! 🍉

not that either is a good thing but there is a small cosmic sort of irony to appreciate in the way that the russian invasion of ukraine and the most recent nakba happened so close together and how they through comparison made it undeniably clear how much the definition of war crime and genocide and atrocity &etc depends on the geopolitical interests of the imperial core
