FAQ

Q: Is there somewhere I can easily read your comic in order?

A: Yes! Check out our ComicFury! You don’t need a ComicFury account in order to read it, and if you want, you can use that to catch up and come right back here <3

Q: Is your clangen modded?

A: Nope! The actual sprites of the characters are normal, but my own creative liberties turn them into sparklecats. That’s why you’ll see Pearlstar with pink and gold and sky blue markings in the pages, but not in his sprite.

Q: Are the background/side characters available for questioning?

A: Yes! You just might not get an answer if I don’t actually have anything written down for their character and therefore nothing to share. Most of the time background npcs are just meaningless background npcs and they don’t even have names lol.

Q: Can I have a reference sheet for [kit/apprentice character]?

A: Nope! I finish and release character reference sheets when they’re adults. It’s significantly less tedium for me to not have to create 3 different ref sheets for their different stages of life. Sometimes there are rare exceptions to the rules (like if a character dies before they turn 12 moons old), but I’d prefer if you didn’t pressure me into making any.

Q: Will we be seeing more of [background/side character]? What about the other clans? Will you be drawing more of [character]? Do you have any plans to make [thing] happen? Is [thing] going to happen? Is [character] planning on doing [thing]? (and other similar questions)

A: I literally cannot answer any of these questions! Because that would be spoilers! I appreciate you being interested in the story, but if you want to find out what happens next, you’re going to have to be patient and wait for a future update. I’m not going to spoil my entire webcomic before I get the chance to tell it lol. If I have plans to show more of a character, then they will appear in the webcomic itself. I usually get a lot of comments asking to see more of a background character whenever I introduce them, or even characters that have never shown up in the webcomic and don’t exist in the webcomic at all but people still assume they must exist by proxy (like the parents of another character, the other clans/cat colonies in the region, etc), and unfortunately there is a pretty effective rule of thumb that applies to this question every time. If they are a background character, it usually means I don’t have anything else for them! If I’ve got juicy ideas in mind for a character, it’ll either appear in the comic itself, or potentially in a side comic, which unfortunately means the answer to your question is “you’ll find out in due time! ;)” lol.

Q: Is the dark brown and red emo cat in the background of a panel in Interlude: Reunion Part 6 Nimble’s sire/bio dad?

A: No. That was a cameo character from my Cult of the Lamb fan OC comic. They’re a Cult of the Lamb oc I repurposed to use as a background cameo, along with a bunch of other sparklecat and emo cat ocs I have on hand. They’re not Nimble’s father. They have no relation to any character in Aphidclan and have NO relevance in the Aphidclan plot or storyline at all, they’re just a background cameo

Boundaries -

-Please don’t be parasocial with me. I’m not an object, or an influencer, or an item to put on a pedestal. I’m a human person with flaws, mistakes, responsibilities, and a life behind the screen, not something to objectify or idealize or be treated like a content factory or corporation. I’m just a guy here to draw cats for fun! Also, don’t demand art from me or demand for updates to come out sooner. It can often come off as very rude/impolite!

-Don’t make human designs of my characters. I’d prefer to do that myself if I ever get around to it

-You are allowed to make headcanons of my characters! Just please be respectful with them and don’t act entitled about them. Especially please be culturally respectful, don’t whitewash any of my characters, don’t make my chubby characters skinny, don’t make my trans characters cisgender, etc. just please be kind with them. Please understand and remember the heavy distinction between headcanon and canon and don’t push me to make your headcanons reality. For me, my own canon comes first.

-Taking inspiration from my work is completely okay! As is fan content (art/writing/animations/etcetera), pinging me for fan content, etc. As long as you’re not plagiarizing or obviously copying my work and crediting me when credit it is due, chances are I’m not gonna have a problem with it 👍

-You are allowed to ping me! Don’t spam me excessively obviously lol, but you are allowed to ping me!

If you behave bigotedly, violate my boundaries, or otherwise make me uncomfortable, I have the right to block you! I’m always open to criticism and advice (and I do appreciate it! I may not respond or prefer to speak privately/one-on-one, but I do still keep it all in mind and cherish/try to use any advice I get), but if you act like an asshole or a bigot, I reserve the right to block you 👍

Not at the moment, no! I’d like to remake it at some point just cuz it’s getting old and could use a quality upgrade, but at the moment it’s fully functional/still the exact same design as it’s always been, so I’d only do that if I had the extra time and motivation to burn

I’m excited to show you guys more about him someday!

I imagine they’re not terribly aware? They’re aware that there’s multiple different colonies of cats living in the distantly nearby area, and that sometimes their kids may wander off and get roped up with these groups, or they try to reach out to the nicest ones (like Aphidclan) for assistance every now and then, but for the most part they stick to their own little barn colony that consists of them and their family. One or two of their kits might’ve joined the group before. They don’t hear anything from most of the kits that go off on their own, though, so they don’t question it much.

I plan on exploring stuff more specifically similar to the lds church, yeah! I wanna explore the shame around sexuality and how it influences people to give up free will/agency over their own bodies, I wanna explore how the spiritual “specialness” of being inside the church vs being dirty and lesser if you’re outside the church can take advantage of the insecure and bring them in to the elite in-group in order to make them feel more “special” by shedding themselves of their “filthier” lesser outsider origins, I wanna explore how it’s very friendly and nice-looking on the outside but can be very hostile to marginalized groups like trans people and BIPOC in a way that contrasts the “we’re very nice” image with systemic discrimination and violence, etc. There’s so much about the Saint tines that I haven’t even gotten the chance to touch on yet, that I plan on exploring way more in the future. So so much, even stuff that might not be terribly specific to the lds church but was definitely an influence/something that played a part in my own development in a religious/spiritual household. If it’s at all possible I’d like to go into how the spiritualism of the church can seriously negatively impact hidden mental disorders…? Not sure if I’ll be able to go into that with Aphidclan. Anything I don’t put in Aphidclan has a high chance of being made into a system comic one day either way lmao

I plan on going into this more and explaining the inner workings of the church in a more in-depth review in the actual comic itself, somewhere in the distant future, but for now I can tell you that the current ranking goes:

Gravel was a councilor. The council is in charge of enforcing the commandments and making sure everyone is in line. Educators are lesser leader figures that handle the Promise Children, they pass down the teachings of the church to the youth and raise all the children, not as parents, but as friendly, guiding mentors. They also help out new, adult members, but not as much, and usually with more backhanded spite. Brothers and sisters are just what the regular members are called. Promise children is every minor in the church, each more special than the last and shimmering with the promise of a “grand destiny,” if they uphold the laws of the church. Lightyear used to be a Promise Child, and then a Brother. Morb used to be a Promise Child, then a Sister. Rye still thinks semi-fondly of their assigned mentor/Educator.

Unfortunately I don’t have redesigns for other characters’ younger versions, no. I only came up with those two on the spot just cuz I needed them, so if ever I need another flashback, I’ll probably come up with more on the spot, but for now nah you’ve seen everything I’ve got

My brain! Also Pinterest helps a lot lmao. I try to think of things that are thematically related or in the same vein as each other, for example Stormwhisper having “storm” in his name so he should get raindrop accessories, Shadebreak having an edgy asf name so they should be emo in appearance, Pearlstar being named “Pearl” should have pearlescent colors, pink/blue/yellow, and that also works well with unicorn aesthetics so he should be unicornkin, essentially a game of connection to me. Taking inspiration from specific fashion styles also helps a lot too.

Growing up in the 2010s! I was there when the sparkledogs hit the deviantart scene… I was there to witness the birth of the cringe comps and the “crit videos” and the rise of cringe culture and the death of the trend and the revival in the 2020s… I have seen it all… I always loved sparklecats since I was a lil kid. They used to be such a taboo in the fandom, widely hated and shat on, it was very discouraging for my early comic years. But when I was holding myself back from making sparklecats, my sparkledog ocs thrived. And now that sparklecats are actually cool again, I’m participating in the renaissance! ✨

Oh man, thank you for the high praise. From my perspective I have sooo much more room to grow with my character designs and they’re nowhere near professional level, but the tips I’d give for that would be: You can still incorporate shape language into the design of a cat, there are art styles that like to go really hard with shape language, Bok Bok Choy’s works are a great example of using extreme shape language for cats to your advantage to communicate personality and character through shapes. But for most warrior cats artists, we don’t usually go to extremes with our shape language, so we try a subtler approach with using shape language in primarily the fur tufts, the ears, the tail, and occasionally the body shape. If the fur tufts are soft and circular, it gives the character a friendlier appearance, while if they’re sharp and angular, it gives them an edgier, harsher appearance. Rectangular for sturdy, etc. For the silhouette of a character, it’s good to make sure they’re recognizably distinct from silhouette alone, even if warriors OCs usually lose the purpose of silhouette design in translation, that being “the ability to instantly glean the entirety of this characters deal through their silhouette alone.” They usually just are cats, and there’s not terribly much you can glean from just… a cat. At least not in comparison to “sharp-witted sarcastic smart deer who’s also a secretary” which could be efficiently communicated through shapes alone if we were dealing with an anthro character medium. So in terms of character design fundamentals, Warrior cats is very very limited in how far it can go, but it’s not impossible! Just rare. Aphidclan only utilizes mild/subtle shape language with its fur tufts and hairstyles and occasionally markings. I’d like to do better about that someday, but I think that’d require a drastic change in art style, one I’m not entirely willing to make. As for colors, I made a whole tutorial on how I use colors, but clashing colors is usually something you train your eye to be able to notice. I’ve learned a few tricks, like “red doesn’t usually look good with pink, but it does look fantastic with cyan” and “purple almost always looks good with yellow, blue, and green, but it might be too complicated of a color palette if you try to combine all 4 at once (and all 4 were competing with each other)” and just generally what colors look good with each other. You start to build your own repertoire of what color palettes you like the most. That’s my explanation, anyway. Thank you for asking!
